Open Game Thread: Husker women battle the Aggies

Texas A+M looks to be the first team this year to topple the Cornhuskers, when they tipoff today in the semi-final round of the Big 12 Tournament. Watching Nebraska play for the first time yesterday, I have a new appreciation for Kelsey Griffin and her abilities on the court. My fears were put to rest, as Coach Yori started the usual five, and only pulled the stars after the game was well in hand.

With a #1 Seed wrapped up for the NCAA's, let's see what happens here today in Kansas City. Like I said, after seeing yesterday's game, I think Yori and crew are going to keep at it, and try to bring home the conference title. Texas A+M played Nebraska close back on Feb. 6th, eventually losing by 11 points in Lincoln as the Huskers needed a push late in the game to stay ahead.

Nebraska hit 30 wins on the season yesterday after pulling away from KSU in a 63-46 win. Another unbelieveable number. The eleventh-ranked Aggies are sitting at 23-7, and should put up a good fight today. Opposite from the Husker men however, this Husker team seems to get stronger as the game goes on.

Check in with your cable provider if you can, as I found the game on a Comcast channel yesterday. Fox Sports will also be carrying the games.

Tipoff time is at noon, central time today. GO BIG RED!

Kelsey on the bench for already having three personals.

Halftime

Huskers down 11. A+M is just hitting shots, and we can’t get back and play defense. Luckily we get stronger down the stretch.

obviously

your office move was the jinx, Jon. Realy fans would have kept everything in place until the season was finally over. </tongue planted firmly in cheek>

BTW, Mr. Corn, you are aware that if you hit shift-7, an ampersand like & will appear? Just trying to help.

what's wrong with a +?

I think the girls looked tired. I watched the whole game, before my computer died on me…

Hopefully the extra days rest will help.

I've Got A Bad Feeling About This...

A couple of thoughts crossed my mind that give me a sense of impending doom:

A: Now that there’s a chink in the Husker women’s armor, will the NCAA selection committee find a way to screw them out of a #1 seeding?

B: I’m starting to get flashbacks of the 2008 baseball team; they played out their minds all season, then crashed-and-burned in the post-season. And they haven’t recovered since.

This is going to sound very harsh, but if the Husker women don’t reach AT LEAST the Sweet Sixteen, I will consider the season a failure. Like I said, it’s a harsh comment and it goes against Tom Osborne’s teachings about winning being a “process.” But, unfortunately, America isn’t wired that way anymore. It’s about finishing. If you don’t finish, then the bashers and the haters call you a fraud.

If they can’t finish, then all that hard work, IMO, will have been waisted. It will be like how Mark Twain described golf: “A good walk spoiled.”

OK, gals. It’s Spring Beak at UNL. You’ve practically got the whole place to yourselves. So lock yourselves in the Devaney Center and get to work.

This season is already a success...

They finished the regular season undefeated when they weren’t supposed to be a major factor in the Big 12. Yori said here that the goal after the first game of the big 12 tourney was to get to the NCAA tourney healthy.

Yes, it would suck if they went out in the first or second round (I don’t think that’s going to happen, but we’ll see). However, they are the first Big 12 team to finish the entire regular season undefeated, and nothing can take that away.

I See A&M Won The Big 12 Tourney

If Kelsey, Cory, and the rest of the gals are the fierce competitors I think they are, they’re more than a little pissed about that. They will need that advantage in the NCAA’s. It’s like “Hey, we played like crap against A&M. Let’s get on the practice court and fix it right now!!”
