Nebraska To Play Washington In Holiday Bowl

This is not the finger I would be using right now, and I would be pointing it at everyone.

It's official - Nebraska will head to the Holiday Bowl to play Washington again. The Holiday Bowl is a great game, great finishes, but it has to be somewhat of a letdown to go to the same bowl we went to last year while playing an opponent we played earlier in the season.

I was looking forward to playing Iowa, getting that hate started a year early, and going to wherever the hell the Insight Bowl is, but no, Missouri gets the pick over Nebraska.

Oh, hell. I'm still pissed off at Shawn Watson after last night's Big 12 title game. I don't see myself getting any less crabby after this selection.

Yay! Jake Locker! Chris Polk! Kill the Huskies!

Whooeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This won't happen in the BIG 10

You guys got screwed here. And that from an MSU fan that got Alabama in the Cap One Bowl despite having beaten Wisconsin who gets the Rose Bowl and TCU.

Alright

The burden is on Bo to channel the anger from this slight and channel it into constructive destruction of the Huskies.

There could not be a worse way to end the season than to lose in a rematch to a team that we beat by 5 touchdowns earlier this year.

Oh and Insight Bowl: may you go bankrupt after only 20,000 fans bother to show up.

I am amused

At the amount of optimism over on the UW site. Nice people, but even with the intangible advantages UW has, there’s just no ignoring the huge disparity in talent.

Heh

Don’t get me wrong guys, I really do like all of you, and I’m happy to see you get into a bowl game, I’m just not seeing how Washington can be competitive if Nebraska plays decently.

For the record I do think it’ll be much closer than 35 points this time around.

Sure, you have huge talent advantage in the trenches...

… But it’s not like you guys are the models of consistency. South Dakota State stood toe to toe to you. Kansas held you to twenty. Iowa St? You didn’t score a TD against TAMU. UW now has something it didn’t have the first time we played you … Experience to go with tape on teams successfully beating you. add in the fact that you all are DISAPPOINTED to be in the Holiday Bowl and, no doubt, completely lacking respect for UW in a game being played in PAC country, and, sure, why not a glimmer of optimism?

Damn, my eyeball tastes good.

by Gekko Mojo on Dec 5, 2010 11:15 PM CST up reply actions

Once again

Notice that about half of those factors you listed included some variant of Nebraska not playing well. I totally recognize that if we come into the game down and not respecting Washington, the game could get much more interesting than any of us over here want.

Ahhh, but you said "decently"...and I said "glimmer of hope"

…you guys should be heavily favored, but the talent disparity is not as great as you might think and guys who were horrible in our first matchup have performed more like themselves in many other games this season. I’d also point out that playing top 10 teams is nothing new for us. This game won’t be too big for our boys.

Damn, my eyeball tastes good.

by Gekko Mojo on Dec 6, 2010 9:35 AM CST up reply actions

I do hope that Washington brings it

For a couple of reasons. One, a game that’s over by halftime doesn’t do either team any good. And two, I’m enough of a fan of the game in general to recognize that it would be a shame for a player like Jake Locker to end his career with a game even slightly resembling his first go around against us.

Believe it or not, I’m actually more worried about this game than I’ve been letting on. I can’t think of a team in the country that has a list of reasons to not show up as long as Nebraska’s is.

Washington is not a bad team. It’s got a good offense and yeah, ok, a pretty bad defense. But even that defense is probably better than say….South Dakota State’s. So yes, if NU takes the night off, they could quite possibly lose.

I think you'll find that our D has actually improved markedly since our last meeting.

… Although one of our DT’s suffered a career threatening injury against WSU.

The real inconsistency is our O-Line. We’ve shuffled in 6 configurations so far this season and have featured two tru freshman and two walk ons at different points. That unit has muted the better than average skill talent we have at QB, WR, and TB. You can look for us to play a lot more sets with 6 OL’s in there. We will not use the TE as much and we will try to challenge your 3-3-5 with a lot of zone and perimeter runs. If you counter with another man down, we’ll start running a bunch of short passing routes with Jake rolling out. These are things you didn’t see so much our first time.

Damn, my eyeball tastes good.

Any lawyers in the house?

Surely if there was behind the scenes dealing with the Insight there’s a claim of some sort that can be filed, right? I mean, when an entity that supposedly represents you (Big 12…we’re still a member, dammit) does something to harm your status and, coincidentally, gets a bigger chunk of cash in the process for itself…there’s some legalities involved there. Right?

by ManAgainstWorld on Dec 5, 2010 8:47 PM CST reply actions

P.S.

I can’t imagine a game that’ll be less watched nationally than this one. 10-3 vs. 6-6 in a rematch of an all-sorts-of-ugly.

I can hear the ratings freefalling in San Diego from all the way up here.

by ManAgainstWorld on Dec 5, 2010 8:49 PM CST up reply actions

Still

More Husker fans will go to San Diego than Missouri fans to Phoenix.

At first I was fighting the urge to blame the Big 12 for this, but there’s no other explanation. The Insight had a GOLDEN matchup with Nebraska and Iowa. There’d have been national interest, the game was a guaranteed sellout. Instead they take one of the most notoriously underachieving fan bases in the country.

I love how the Missouri fans are crowing about how Nebraska got shafted. As if they actually did anything to best us, apart from being next in line after Beebe seemingly blackmailed the Insight bowl into passing on Nebraska.

I know it might seem as though this is about the Huskies, but it’s not.

Who wants to play a rematch in a bowl against anyone, let alone a team you beat by 35? As I said elsewhere in the thread, people aren’t mad about playing Washington because Washington sucks (they don’t), but because we already played Washington and we’re playing them again in 10 months. It’s the same reason we didn’t want to play Oklahoma State again in the Big 12 title game: These games are for playing someone different, someone you didn’t already play two and half months ago.

Nebraska is better than Missouri. This year and last year. This year Misery’s story is “but for that first quarter…” and last year your story was “but for Gabbert’s ankle…”

Grow up mpfische. You’re a giant tool.

by KC Gunner on Dec 5, 2010 10:15 PM CST up reply actions

By taking Missouri over Nebraska

The Insight Bowl gets not only a team that lost head-to-head and in the division standings to the other, but also:

1) Far fewer fans attending the game (less $)
2) A team that draws consistently lower TV ratings (less $)
3) A much less intriguing storyline (less $)

Huff and puff all you want, but there’s simply no logical reason for the Insight Bowl to make this decision, outside of external pressure. This is simply a terrible decision by the Insight Bowl from every practical angle. Nice try, though.

by Grixxly on Dec 6, 2010 6:44 AM CST up reply actions

Just weird....

At least Nebraska has some rationale for feeling mistreated, Iowa’s emotions are just confusing. They finish the year losing three in a row including NorthW and Minnesota, and they’re complaining about getting a 10-2 top 15 opponent. If they were in the Big 12 they’d be lucky to go to Shreveport.

And as far as Nebraka being better than Missouri…who knows….teams and fans find all sorts of reasons for losing, NU was certainly better than MU in Lincoln this this year must Missouri crushed A&M and soundly beat OU which NU couldn’t do.

BTW, is there any truth to the rumor that you guys turned down the Alamo Bowl which is actually higher than the Holiday?

by mpfische on Dec 6, 2010 7:23 AM CST up reply actions

Iowa is not upset about getting a highly ranked opponent

Iowa is upset that they don’t get to kick off their rivalry with Nebraska a year early. Bowl games are generally pretty meaningless. Playing NU would have added significance to an otherwise mid-tier bowl game.

And no, I’m quite sure that rumor is false.

"My hardest job is to convince the people of Nebraska that 10-1 is not a losing season." - Tom Osborne

by jdhusker on Dec 6, 2010 9:41 AM CST up reply actions

That's just dumb....

Iowa has jack to complain about, the bowl system worked to their benefit as opposed to Missouri and Nebraska. All this conference affiliation crap makes for dumb match-ups. The fact that two teams outside of the top-30 (Washington and Iowa) are even considered for post-season games against top-15 teams is absurd on its face. Neither MU or NU have anything to play for, both are expected to win and their isn’t much drama. Affiliations should be done away with in favor of matching up teams with comparable records/rankings. Iowa should be thrilled that they’ve got a chance to play ANY team a victory against which will leave them in the top-25.

by mpfische on Dec 6, 2010 11:36 AM CST up reply actions

Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah

We are bowl eligible and the logical match up was us v NU… This isn’t a slight against Mizzou, hardly. But this game has no national revelence so we were hoping it was going to be more than a vacation.

From my perspective, this is Hawkeyes v Huskers:
Pack the stadium: Check.
Interesting story: Check.
Bowl makes good money and good TV ratings: Check.
Two teams that are going to fight like it’s the mNC because the game means something: Check

What the Insight bowl did? Fail.

BTW, I wouldn’t overlook our bowl record. If we field the team that played MSU a curb stompin is a comin…

the Huskies have been a resilent group according to coach Sark

Most Husky fans were not happy when we heard the matchup. We know we are a ways away and need a couple of more years. We would have preferred Notre Dame or some 7 and 5 team.

I believe in Coach Sark and he wants this rematch. We did not compete in the Nebraska like we did beating USC in LA. In the Nebraska game we had 12 true freshman playing who were “star struck” – Nebraska is pretty intimidating for someone who was in high school 2 months before the game. They are not freshman anymore and Jake Locker really wants to redeem himself for such a poor showing. This game is going to be a dog fight.

2 years ago we were 0 and 12, 1 year ago 5 and 7 last year and 6 and 6 this year. We have had a couple of top 25 recruiting class and impressing the Southern California recruits will be a big deal in San Diego.

So, my point is, I would pay attention to this game if I were you.

Seeing as I’m the only one who’s dropped the F-bomb in either thread. :-)

I wasn’t actually that angry about the A&M game, the Martin suspension, the Big 12 North trophy, etc., but I’m downright livid about this. Tough to explain why.

Your advice is good, though. I’m going into surgery tomorrow – when I come to, I’ll try to carry my comfortably numb state over into my thoughts about the Big 12.

I am wondering

if the Nebraska traveling fans want to go to San Diego to this game. What would the big XII gain or lose if they are responsible for low attendance at two bowls?

by Roadweary on Dec 5, 2010 11:06 PM CST reply actions

That's what I'm wondering

I’m also curious about whether the Holiday Bowl responds to the Big 12’s slight by refusing to be tied with them when bowl alignments are reshuffled next year.

Important to remember

As we all chew on a bit of shit sandwich here, that we’re all Husker fans and part of Husker Nation. Yes, this bowl invite feels like a groin kick (or at least another aTm fondle…), but we owe it to the team to support them and turn out en masse just like we normally would. I hope a sea of red makes its way to San Diego.

We’ll be there supporting the team, taking the kids to Sea World and the San Diego Zoo and wearing as much red as we can. Hope many others will do likewise.

And can I also suggest that anyone going find a screen printer to slap the Big Ten logo on whatever Nebraska attire you’ll be wearing to the game. I see no reason why we should relegate the honors of parting shot to the Big 12 ;)

GO BIG RED!!

That is

the best thing I’ve heard so far. Spread the word.

My brother-in-law does T-shirts & stuff. I am gonna have him make up some stuff for me. Can’t make it to Holiday Bowl but I will be in front of a TV.

Be miserable or motivate yourself. What's to be done it's always YOUR choice.

just wanted to say....

I’m not a husker fan, but people in the family are. I do have to say that the Huskers did shoot themselves in the foot for losing to the Sooners Sat. night. That’s locked in stone. Huskers playing in the Holiday bowl is a giant mistake. It’s Beebe’s way of saying screw you to Nebraska as a parting shot. Why else would the Insight bowl pass them over for Mizzou, the same team that got passed over last year for IA St? I’m sure that if Colorado had been bowl eligible that Beebe would have black balled them as well for leaving the conference. People tend to forget that the only reason Mizzou is ranked higher than Neb in the BCS is because Neb lost in the title game, otherwise Neb would be higher ranked. There’s no way that Mizzou should have been chosen over runner up champ of big 12. Nebraska, thank your lucky stars that you are coming into a real conference where things tend to be fair and not catered to an dominant egotistical team like Texas. Nebraska, stomp the Huskies again, and welcome to the Big 10!

You got screwed with playing UW!!!!

Hey guys I am a Wazzu fan and all I can say is that I am sorry!!! You guys are a great team that should be playing in a BCS game and i thought you could of played for the national championship this year and now for your bowl game you get to play a terrible UW team!! First off they beat us last night in the final 2 minutes. Despite the difference in record at the end of the season we even in talent. Now if we played Nebraska, we would get killed!! So you guys are going to blow them out just like in August.

Every team UW beat this year is not bowl eligible, that right there tells you how good they are. Jake Locker is a bust and there is not much talent around him beside polk and kearse and on defense all they have is foster. UW going to the holiday bowl is a disgrace and I feel for you. They should be playing in a humanitarian bowl in Boise not a good bowl game. I wish the BCS would match bowls based on talent and records and not seeds from a division. I believe that you guys should be playing someone like alabama or LSU not a 6-6 UW team! So Anyways from Pullman, Washington, my condolences go to all Nebraska Fans for this match up!

INTERPRETATION

“Wazzu” is Washington State University. We Husky fans have to live with (and sometime be married to) these people.

There is a term in the State of Washington when someone really screws up; we say that someone “Couged It” as Mbrentin just did.

big bummer

We feel for you guys, NEB definitely got shafted by the insight bowl, a lovely parting gift from your soon-to-be-ex-conference indeed.

Dawgs are not excited about the rematch either (it wouldn’t be quite as bad if we did not play a 3rd time next year!) but I have to admit it is worse for NEB…at least we get a chance to prove that we have made progress and make this one a game (and Locker can exact some revenge)…whereas even a NEB blowout doesn’t prove anything we didn’t already know.

At least we all get to enjoy the weather in San Diego, life is not all bad, see you there!

GO DAWGS!!

BTW – I cannot help but mention that Mbrentin’s comment above is not just irritating (for reasons I will politely keep to myself) but it is also factually wrong. Syracuse is bowl eligible and for the purposes of this argument I would also count USC.

And a few others would be if they could have beaten us...

…plus, all of those teams have L’s against two top 4 teams. OSU has 4 losses against 3 of the top 4 plus Boise St.

Damn, my eyeball tastes good.

the plus side

we end the season with 11 wins!

by J.uden on Dec 6, 2010 8:55 AM CST reply actions

now if we can put all 11 wins in a row next year we will be national championship bound!

by J.uden on Dec 6, 2010 8:56 AM CST up reply actions

I am

happy to be going to a bowl. Is it the one the Huskers would have liked to get, probably not. But I remember a few years back when getting to any bowl would have been thrilling. I am not particularly excited about the rematch. Their is no storylines or mysteries to examine and talk about for the next few weeks. We know if we pressure Locker we will win. Our run defense is better than it was in week three, which really spells trouble for their offense. I think it will be a toss up who the rematch benefits more. But, this time around I think it will be a lot closer game, because I don’t expect Locker to play that bad again. Which is to bad because anything less than a blowout by the Huskers will be looked down upon by many.
