Post Game - 2010 Big 12 Championship Shawn Watson Idiot Thread
Nebraska loses the 2010 Big 12 Championship game.
Call it what you want. Me? Shawn Watson - moron.
You know what I want for Christmas? A Nikon D7000.
Problem - at this point in time, I can't afford a Nikon D7000.
You know what Shawn Watson wants for Christmas?
Oregon's offense.
Shawn Watson can't afford Oregon's offense.
Difference?

Dont
Dont be hard on taylor, at the end of the game you could see he cared.
50% Watson, 35% Bo, and 15% Taylor.

Open your eyes!!!
No body else on the team could make what he did out of what was called. Look at the game. Earlier in the year he was running when anything look bad. Tonight he stayed in the pocket. That was not his decision. He looked uncomfortable all night with the game plan. Yea maybe if we would of had Lee or Green in the there we could of avoided one turnover, but that is about it.

In fairness
Bo definitely could have overruled Watson and gotten Martinez out of there. That said, I’m EXTREMELY disappointed with our coaches in this one. Hats off to OU though, they could’ve laid down and died.

Good luck in the Big 10 next year and the future. Beat the snot out of those guys.

Weak Coaching
This is all on Bo & Wats. Why the heck was Martinez still in? Is it a “learning experience”? Let him get that in the blowouts. In this game, you should be playing to win! Martinez has happy feet in the pocket and we had to pass. This isn’t a second semester problem. Watson has to go and if Bo can’t figure it out, he won’t last as long as he should, either. Time for him to grow up as a coach.
Don't blame Martinez!!!
I don’t care who was directing the offense in the second half. You couldn’t over come the play calling on offense!!
by Jessica Watters Einspahr on Dec 4, 2010 11:06 PM CST up reply actions
Martinez in Watson out!
It just looked like they told Martinez not to run tonight. There is serious lack of confidence problem with our offense. If our players are not completely superior we will not win. If we are even we will lose badly. If we are one step ahead of the competition we lose respectively. That is all coaching (offensive coaching).
by Jessica Watters Einspahr on Dec 4, 2010 11:13 PM CST up reply actions
I'm not focusing on Watson primarily...
…but Bo and Shawn both have to answer the question why Taylor Martinez finished the game.
Let me try to find the bright side
I think we only had one maybe two flags called against us…..that’s a plus.
Get more flags!

Deep sigh.
It was a great game. Can’t deny that. Just sucks, but it seems that Taylor possibly lost the game for us with the interception and fumbles. No excuses though. We had plenty of chances, but Oklahoma was tough.
Tomorrow is a new day.
Sorry for my bad
attitude,,,but we should have had this one!!! Now we just go on as an average team that can’t win a big game!!

I am going to try to be reasonable
I realize the emotions are high, the alcohol levels too. But while this is on the coaches. We have had a great year this year. The talk off potentially firing bo is ridiculous. Years have their ups and downs. At least we’re not Texas. We have 10 wins, I expected 9 in the regular season coming into this year. While I wanted to win the Big 12 in the last year, you can’t peg a coaches career on one game.
The narrative would have been great, but sometimes the narrative doesn’t go your way.
For anyoe who gets NTV out of Kearney,

Farewell, Nebraska fans.
I imagine you will be able to party like its 1999 again, if not this year.
screw this, I should be sleeping anyway.
If we should win, let it be by the code. If we should lose, we'll stand by the road and cheer as the winnners go by.
I think our players showed that today. They were very friendly and showed a lot of respect for each other.

Congratulations Sooners
We got out coached tonight, offensively!!! Defense did enough to win, with the situations they were in. Coach Wats if you want to call him that. Let down Husker Nation tonight and worst of all the players. Forget turnovers that was players, but at least they fought back to defend. You just can’t overlook bad play calling. Looked like junior play calling in the second half(the whole game, except players made the plays in the first half besides the offensive play calling. Hats off to Nebraska and Oklahoma players was a great game!!!!

Sloppy play. Think about it – how many fumbles, penalties and other mistakes were the balance tipping to the opponents?

It’s so weird – for some reason, Bo’s teams seem to feel well-coached, but if you look at it objectively, they display all the hallmarks of poorly coached teams: Fumbles, penalties, dropped passes, mental mistakes in key spots.

Honestly,
Too many turnovers and T-Magic looked too much like a freshman. The play calling was nothing to write home about and Oklahoma made us pay. Give all the credit to Oklahoma, they outplayed us just enough on offense to get the job done, I’ll miss playing them. Congrats Sooners.
I blame the decision to throw two passes late in the first half with 1st and goal
The interception let OU back in the game.
I was worried sick from the second that happened
Bo Has Some Time
Bo isn’t going anywhere, but growth has to be shown. I think most of us, when he was hired, expected him to do well, and he has. And many of us probably thought he’d be here the next 20 years or so. However, T.O. won’t be A.D. that much longer, and a new A.D. may not be as patient if a coach doesn’t grow. I think Bo has 3 or 4 years yet to prove he can be the true head of the program when the tough decisions have to be made on staff. Cotton’s line has been flat-out awful for 3 years running now, yet he’s still here. Watson has a great offense, but doesn’t know how to call it, yet he’s still here.
Everyone thought Cotton had figured it out early in the year, when Martinez was healthy, competition was lighter and big plays against poor defenses were easy. Since late October, his line has shown how poor they are. Tons of mental mistakes and penalties, horrible pass protection (regardless of QB) and just not good enough to get it done. Now maybe it’s players, but we seem to have the talent. So why is he still here?
Callahan held on to Cosgrove, you’ll recall, stubbornly despite the obvious failures of Cosgrove’s unit. Ultimately the defense was Callahan’s demise and helped usher him out the door. Cotton and Watson have been our failure points, at least on the coaching staff, these past 3 years. The players have to do it, right?, but you have to give them a chance and coach to their strengths, too. I just don’t see it. Oh well. On to, likely Iowa in the Insight Bowl it sounds like.
This is just
Bo’s 3rd year right? Isn’t he still playing with “the man that shall not be named” recruits?
Recruiting Rankings
He is, for the most part, and you’ll recall those recruits were ranked very, very highly. We have good players, I believe. You need a lot of luck to win a title, but you also need to be really tough mentally. We’re not quite there yet among the players and we have a few coaches who really fail in that area, too, in my opinion.
At this point can our fan base get behind Martinez as a freshman?
Do we have the patience for him to ‘develop’?
i hope so
because he’s still a big talent…. as long as his head comes around…..

The kid is an amazing player, he has a lot to learn. I don’t think pulling him tonight would have hurt anything.
Our play calling was awful tonight. Was it just me or did it seem like we ran this sequence for an entire quarter: Run right for -5, run left for 3, incomplete pass or sack, punt.
I AM VIKING, HEAR ME ROAR!!!
I think it was just a string of bad luck with injuries.
Because when he wasn’t injured there was no question about him. Constant play maker all the time.
by Aaron Gonzales on Dec 4, 2010 11:08 PM CST up reply actions
I cant answer for the whole fan base
But I still have hope for him. There is a lot of growing that goes on in those early years. It is obvious that he has much on the mental side of the game to improve on. But he is 18/19. I think one off season will give him much more confidence and make his aspirations realistic.
Good question
I could see us forgiving him pretty quickly once we see him on a healthy ankle again. He’s a completely different player.
by Cheeseandcorn on Dec 4, 2010 11:11 PM CST up reply actions
He got off to a really good start tonight.
Wats didn’t seem to give him much to work with, though, and once the pressure started getting to him he went a little “put the team on my shoulders” and started holding onto the ball too long.
"...water for the corn." — petromax spambot
OU played a great game.
Nebraska needs some more bootleg and roll out passes as clearly Taylor can’t be in the pocket for passing plays. Lot’s of missed opportunities tonight, but we got a little taste of Sooner Magic one last time. Best of luck to OU in the future. Bring on Iowa/Michigan in the Insight Bowl.
RE: Patience
davereid: I think we saw that patience in the A&M game and tonight. If Martinez doesn’t leave, I think he could really be something. But since he’s not ready, he shouldn’t have been in the game after making SO many mistakes tonight.
what the FUCK
are we doing? Has watson not FUCKED us in every close game for the years he’s been here? Could bo please pull his head out of watson’s ass, shower the shit off, and give him the hard boot? Excuse me while I go have a fucking SEIZURE on the ground for fuck’s sake
Nebraska is too high profile of a job to have that level of OC on the job
Seriously, think of the wunderkinds we could bring in
Watson is not going anywhere.
Nebraska would have to have a 2010 Texas-esque year for Pelini to give him the boot. Not saying that’s the way it should be, but that’s the way it is.

Did Anybody Listen To The Game On The Radio?
Matt Davison was begging, pleading for the offense to ram it down the Sooners’ throat. Watson wouldn’t do it.
I’m going to go ahead and say it: I will never forgive Martinez for that endzone pick; it changed the whole game right there. After that , the offense imploded.
The Blackshirts busted their balls trying to give us a chance, but Watson and Martines were killing them.
"This is gonna cause more confusion than a mouse at a burlesque show." --Foghorn Leghorn
Rhythm-impaired
Here’s what Watson does well…develop good ideas and adjust as the game/season goes on (the conservative offense in the latter half of ‘09, Burkhead in the Wildcat, etc.) Here’s what Watson doesn’t do so well….find rhythm. I swear every time he picks on something and it starts working he then tries to show off all his looks and plays. Why be “multiple” when one thing is working well? Ride that one thing (like Burkhead in the Wildcat tonight) and show a little variety to keep the D honest!
Just like Bill
You’re right. Just like he learned under Callahan. I hadn’t thought of that before.
Taylor Needs to get his eyes checked.
The camera crew caught Taylor looking at the sideline quite a few times tonight for the play call and EVERY time he was squinting to see the play. Maybe he needs to get contacts. Maybe this is “Wild Thing” Ricky Vaughn and all he really needs to make these passes that he is constantly throwing behind receivers is contact lenses.
Amazing!
Incredible how all of you bitching about Watson have coached so damn many games and have such great insight into play calling. Get over it. The better team won tonight. It’s so damn easy to sit here and second guess. You bunch of losers!

Would you have stuck with Martinez...
givenh is less than average performance with Green on the bench who is 2-0 as a starter this year coming off a great game one week ago and having a veteran Sr. QB who had taken these bullets many times before sitting in your back pocket? Knowing that your young qb was NOT healthy? Come on? That is all coaching. 100%.
It doesn't matter what I think.
I’m not the coach of Nebraska. His name is Bo Pelini. If you don’t like him, contact Harvey Perlman and ask him to get rid of him.

But to ignore obvious lapses is foolish. He got out-coached plain and simple. You are the only one who seems to think differently.

But I’m a coach...
So? Not trying to start any argument, but the notion that we can’t criticize without having coached is silly. I can’t sing a lick, but I can tell a great singer from a mediocre one.
None of us need coaching experience to see that Watson’s offenses are consistently sloppy (penalties, drops, fumbles), that he’s consistently outcoached in game by top coaches, that our offense seems to be a lot more of a mish-mash than synergystic, etc.
There Are A Lot Of Coaches
And there are good coaches and bad coaches. For every Bo Pelini or Bob Stoops, there are about 20 Bill Callahan’s. Even good coaches get outcoached now and then and that’s what happened last night.
I don’t believe Watson is a bad coach or even offensive coordinator, but his playcalling last night from the 2nd quarter on was atrocious. When running straight at them seemed to be working extremely well, he started getting too cute. I did like the Wildcat look for a little diversity as we were moving the ball successfully but the turnover bug bit us again and stopped us.
And we should have pulled Martinez. He was about as mobile as a retirement home resident. Combine that with his deer in the headlights look, and the only thing that could have resulted was disaster.
I AM VIKING, HEAR ME ROAR!!!
Good game agreed.
But the kids can only execute the same play so many times before the other teams is going to figure it out. Jon’s only friend. Have you ever had Jon in your scope and shot just to the right to get his attention when he was lost. That is a friend or maybe his brother-in-law

Amen!
It’s a great way to vent frustrations. There are probably quite a few of us on here that have coached on some kind of level, and criticism comes with the territory. I’ve been there, done that, dealt with it.
It’s not like any of us know the Nebraska offense inside and out, or could call the plays ourselves, but most of us could see what was working and what wasn’t working. When a coach keeps trying to run plays that aren’t working, it comes down to ego. The “Goddammit, this play will work!” mentality. Except they didn’t work and that mentality cost Nebraska the game.
I AM VIKING, HEAR ME ROAR!!!
Plain and simple...we got out coached
This is 100% on Bo. He should have yanked Taylor at half time. He gave us absolutely nothing and was not close to being healthy. We got out coached for 3 quarters and lost. End of story.

OU/NU never should’ve let those Texas schools into our conference. But ya can’t let them just take it over either…gotta stay and fight em, oh well
I hate to say it but without the Texas schools
the Big 8 was going to go broke.
The Big 8 schools have too much dead weight. The true mistake was the unwillingness of the Big 8 schools to drop some of the existing members for the sake of making a better more balance conference.
If 6 of the original Big 8 members joined Texas schools as well as 2 additional schools within the Texas, Louisiana, Ark, corridor you never would have had the problems you see now. The North would have started at Ok and gone north and each team would have a Neutral site N/S built in rivalry game to preserve Tx/OU.
Some of the blame for all of this can fall to the feet of the Big 8 from the very beginning.

I can’t stand it any longer. Watson has always been suspect to me. Year after year we see nothing but single dimension on offense. One that seems to be created by a “brilliant offensive mind” but takes Defensive Coordinators (from real programs) less than a quarter to figure out. Bo screams at his players and pushes them hard (as he should) because he has high standards. Why can’t we expect the same from his staff. Let’s be done with this Callahan (sp) Era hold over.
Bottom line. What have we accomplished? In the end we are still just a good team-an also mentioned. Sure, lots of fans would love to be in our shoes. We can and should expect more. Accept your responsability Bo and hold EVERYONE to your standard.

NU played with pride, but there was no doubt that OU wad the better team tonight.
I’d rather lose these games close rather than get blown out. Proud to be an NU fan tonight.

Hey
Up visiting some friends. Watched the game.
Sucks that Martinez hasn’t been healthy in a month. Offense really ran through him. Seems like the oline can’t adapt either.
If you are going to blame Wats, Cotton has to share the blame as well.

Those kids did what they could. They are kids and make mistakes, that’s what I love about this game. Proud of our players-all of them. Not proud of our program of late and not Watson. He’s paid to perform and hasn’t.

Trying to keep up with this thread
and all of the back and forth, has been dizzying…can’t wait to read it in it’s true context tomorrow!
OH MY GOD!
ohmygodohmygod. The absolutely perfect ending to our Big 12 life!!!!!!!
You’ve been saving this, haven’t you, Bump?
Thank you from the bottom of my cat-loving heart!
Not gonna lie...
I stumbled across it in the earlier cat onslaught but figured I’d save it!
davereid,
a thousand thanks to you, and all of the lolcat posters. My husband tends to lose patience about how much time I spend on this site, but all I have to do is scroll through the kitty pictures, and he understands…and trots off to coffee to tell his non-football friends about this Husker site that has CAT PICTURES for God’s sake! Thanks to all of you guys who take the time to post them.
LOL
I can’t even get my husband to look at the cats…..it’s just “how are your friends on line dealing with the loss”

Finally caught up with this post of yours…Quite, quite intriguing thought!
Big, sad sigh - big long post.
I had such high hopes tonight. Especially after 17-0.
After three years under Pelini it’s obvious there’s a lot of improvement being made in Lincoln. Callahan’s last squad hadn’t a freaking clue on defense, didn’t care about playing for Nebraska, and flat sucked the joy out of being a Cornhusker fan.
One year after giving Kansas 76 points, we beat Clemson in the frigging Gator Bowl. One. Year. I don’t think we realize how incredible the turnaround has been. As much as Nebraska is a storied college football program, we were lousy long enough under Callahan that we fell completely off the national radar. Bo has brought us back to national prominence, and he’s just now getting his own players into the mix.
Next year’s question will be, “Can we take the next step?” In that I see a number of sub-questions:
1. Can we develop an offense that imposes itself on defenses no matter the circumstance?
2. Can we continue to excel defensively in the Big Integer without being hamstrung playing against other offensive styles?
3. Can we continue to recruit nationally, expecially in Texas, California and Florida, when we’ll be playing in none of those states?
The biggest question of all, though, is this: can we be a program with championship-level desire, discipline and maturity under Bo Pelini and his staff? I honestly don’t know at this point, especially on the offensive side of the ball. I don’t say this to bag on Coach Watson – I’m just asking the question. Can we take a winnable game away from a top-level opponent? It’s the last piece of the puzzle, I think, because to this point we haven’t done it yet. Va Tech in 08-09, Texas in 09-10, OU tonight: all were games that were there to be won, but were ultimately lost.
I hope like hell we can do it under Bo. I like him, I like his staff, and I like how they work with the kids. I love their fire, their enthusiasm, their commitment to each other and to the way they’re shaping these young men. We have a clean program – no one’s chasing rumors about gold-digger daddy-dearest types shopping their kids to Nebraska. But in strict football terms, there’s still a lot of work to be done.
I’m really disappointed tonight – I still believe we should have won the game. Kudos to Oklahoma for getting it done, and I wish them the best of luck in the Big 8+4-2 in the future. But dammit, it would have been awesome to go out on top, and I have to put the fact that we didn’t on us – we had our chances but couldn’t seal the deal. Hopefully that changes in the very near future.

Outstanding post GBR...
To answer the maturity question, I believe I have an answer for you. Pelini has been a head coach for 3 years. He’s still learning too. Osborne didn’t even come close to breaking through for 5-6 years. I’m completely confident that we’ve got the right guy at the helm.
"My hardest job is to convince the people of Nebraska that 10-1 is not a losing season." - Tom Osborne
Fairness?
Do you really think mentioning Pellini and Osborne in the same breath is fair to either gentlemen?
Note to Bill Byrne "Because you aren´t Texas and you´ll never be Texas"
Considering Pelini had to build from scratch while T.O. had an elite level program when he started,
I think it’s more than fair to put Pelini and Osborne in the same breath. “to this point in their careers,” obviously.
"...water for the corn." — petromax spambot
Dont Want To Troll
But Dr. Tom did not have a Big XII North. Bo really has not accomplished much outside of that division. In addition, some of Dr. Tom´s failures were some fantastic teams that fell short in the MNC. Dr. Tom always comports himself as a gentlemen, while Bo sometimes comports himself as the tailed part of a horse.
Note to Bill Byrne "Because you aren´t Texas and you´ll never be Texas"
Dr. Tom Was Already an HOFer at that point
Note to Bill Byrne "Because you aren´t Texas and you´ll never be Texas"
I'm not saying overall Bo and Tom are on the same page,
but they’re startlingly similar at this point in their careers. Good teams that just can’t seem to break through. Accompanied by rumblings from the natives, too.
"...water for the corn." — petromax spambot
hasn't this happened before?
maybe we should give the staff a chance
by fryingdutchman on Dec 5, 2010 12:03 AM CST up reply actions
I'm not saying we shouldn't give them a chance
just pointing out an obvious correlation between Bo and T.O. Obviously we hope the coaching staff sticks around and does well in the future.

In fairness
The Big 8, aside from NU and OU was pretty darn mediocre for most of TO’s years. CU, MU, and KU had moments, but KSU, ISU, and OSU were pretty uniformly bad. There’s a reason that Nebraska and Oklahoma played for what was it? 30 some conference titles in the last 50 years?
"My hardest job is to convince the people of Nebraska that 10-1 is not a losing season." - Tom Osborne
Just pointing out what they have in common
They’re clearly very different men. But here’s what I meant:
Osborne is a legend. We want Bo to take Nebraska back to where Osborne took them. Osborne had his share of frustrations as a new HC as well.
I don’t think we can blame this loss on Pelini’s temper or whatever. A&M? Absolutely. That was a teachable moment, but I think we’ve got the right guy.
"My hardest job is to convince the people of Nebraska that 10-1 is not a losing season." - Tom Osborne
I agree. Pelini is the right guy.
Folks, this is not a quick fix. It was an absolute mess after BC left. And, NCAA D-1 isn’t the way it used to be. Scholarship limits have brought on parity. Nebraska is an elite program, but in the past there were far fewer elite programs than there are now. Where was Oregon back in the 1990’s. Boise State? TCU? It has all changed.
by jon's only friend on Dec 4, 2010 11:51 PM CST up reply actions
You could be channeling Dr. Osborne.
Being older than most of you on this site, TO,during his latter years of coaching, said the same things…scholarship limits, parity…and, to be honest, life in the Big 8 was a lot easier than life in the Big 12 has been, a crappy coach excepted.
And the good doctor went about 22 years before he won his first NC.
And regarding Bo…do we want to turn into the Texas fans that, after years of success under Mac Brown, are now calling for his head? Correct me if I’m wrong, but Bo now has three 9-win seasons under his belt. Considering the dregs he was left with, I consider that amazingly successful.
Bo is the right guy
He is a defensive coach and defense id pretty damn good, we just need his equal on the offensive side. That for damn sure isnt Watson.
So I tried the Barbasol and Rotel dip and I was very dissapointed!
I always love your posts, Rev.
One natural question that stems from this one: Do you think the program will take that step next year? I’m curious about your answer to that question and your three subquestions.
by Cheeseandcorn on Dec 4, 2010 11:45 PM CST up reply actions
I certainly hope so,
but I just don’t know. I’m somewhat in Jon’s corner on Watson – very smart coach who likes being smart a bit too much. Frustrating doesn’t begin to cover my thoughts on our offense right now – so many weapons being used soooooo poorly. On the whole I’d say we’re still too complicated and not nasty enough up front, even though we’ve certainly improved under Watson & Cotton.
"...water for the corn." — petromax spambot
But none of our weapons on offense are really changing next year.
Does Watson suddenly learn how to use them? I feel like we’re in no man’s land with Watson – he’s bad enough to continually keep this team, with its elite defense, from winning big games. But he’s just good enough to avoid any serious calls for his firing. Sometimes I wish he would get caught having sex with cheerleaders or something so we could have an excuse to get rid of him and move on to an offensive coach worthy of being paired with such a phenomenal defense.

I will miss the Big XII conference format that existed for the last few years. I thought it was a helluva football conference. Great games, great rivalries, contrasting styles, and great players. Colt McCoy, Sam Bradford, Suh, VY, some of the greatest players in the history of College Football.
Note to Bill Byrne "Because you aren´t Texas and you´ll never be Texas"
I don't know....
I’ve been a long time Watson apologist, and there’s no doubt that our offense improved this year, but DAMN. In the last two years, every single loss has been at least…I’d say at least 80% our offense’s fault.
Bo deserves a sizable chunk of the blame too. It’s up to him to overrule the OC when he’s not getting it. Watson wasn’t getting it tonight, and Bo let him keep going on. Who knows, for all we know, Watson may have been begging Bo to get TMart out of there, who knows.
Bottom line, our offense is THE ONLY thing that’s holding us back at this point. Our offensive line once again let us down, and horribly sloppy play at times.
At this point, I’m not angry. I’m just sad about this game. Sad because we clearly had the tools to win. We had two perfectly good quarterbacks that were more than capable of getting us the 20 yards we needed on MULTIPLE drives. I’m just sad because it so clearly didn’t have to be this way. I just HAVE to know WHY? Why didn’t we get TMart out of the game when it was clear he couldn’t get it done?

agreed...
I felt like this game could have played into Zac Lee’s hand tonight. He knows how to throw the ball away to keep field position and knows how to pick up a blitz. If was obvious Taylor didn’t have it….but i don’t think Cody Green would have sparked them either.
But
CG wasn’t emotionally traumatized or w/e Martinez’s issue was. Martinez’s problem wasn’t just being injured, he made numerous horrible decisions that cost us a load of points and gave OU a handful more.
More than anything, we just needed a sound decision-maker in there.
"My hardest job is to convince the people of Nebraska that 10-1 is not a losing season." - Tom Osborne
Indeed
Seriously, does anybody have any non-conspiracy ideas for why Martinez stayed in there?
"My hardest job is to convince the people of Nebraska that 10-1 is not a losing season." - Tom Osborne
so he doesn't transfer...
plain and simple
To that I say let him transfer.
I’ll take my chances with Green.
But this loss is still 100% on the coaches
Taylor was just doing what he was told to do.
Not saying these ideas are terrible, just giving rebuttals
If Martinez is that big of a bitch, do we even want him on this team? I mean seriously, we’ve got good recruits coming in, I think Green will eventually be a competent qb, is TMart’s abilities really worth sacrificing a championship. If he’s that way, the team no doubt hates him anyway, and that sort of discord will cost us games in the future as well.
"My hardest job is to convince the people of Nebraska that 10-1 is not a losing season." - Tom Osborne
And my response to this one
Is we’d have the bowl game and the whole summer to build him up again. How could him making so many costly mistakes HELP his confidence?
"My hardest job is to convince the people of Nebraska that 10-1 is not a losing season." - Tom Osborne
I'm going to imagine that moving to the Big 10 when Martinez kicking ass
that this game will be seen as a turning point for him
Are we being serious here?
You really think Bo would keep playing someone just so he won’t transfer? I don’t buy that for one second. IF the rumors are true, I don’t think Bo gives a tin shit either way – you’re either all-in or you’re out. I’m sure Bo thought Taylor gave us the best chance to win tonight, pure and simple.
"...water for the corn." — petromax spambot
And yet
I can’t fathom how he thought that. I agree with your characterization of Bo. I cannot imagine him bending to the ultimatum of some stuck up California diva.
"My hardest job is to convince the people of Nebraska that 10-1 is not a losing season." - Tom Osborne
Then he is dumber than we thought....
It was obvious to millions of fans that Taylor didn’t have it tonight. The offense was an entirely different animal with Burkhead running the read…..he had to know that TMart was hurting his chances….AS EVERYONE ELSE DID
Bo is still kicking himself for benching Taylor when we were behind against Texas.
He was paranoid about making the same mistake twice, and it blinded him to his better judgment. Seems fairly simple, I think.
by Cheeseandcorn on Dec 5, 2010 12:03 AM CST up reply actions
But dude.....
2 minutes left? We need 20 yards?
"My hardest job is to convince the people of Nebraska that 10-1 is not a losing season." - Tom Osborne
Come on
Bo wasn’t going to suddenly turn to Cody Green with two minutes to go in the game. Now, we should have run the Wildcat all the way on that drive, but that’s more on Watson than Pelini.
by Cheeseandcorn on Dec 5, 2010 12:06 AM CST up reply actions
exactly correct with Bo
I completely agree with this comment about Bo….but I think Watson subconciously was worried about Taylor leaving if they shake his confidence again.
agreed again...
But CG hasn’t proven he is a sound decision-maker yet either….but who knows, tonight could have been his break-through night, but generally you wouldn’t be looking to break someone out in the b12championship
I can't help it... got to post this one...

Frank Herbet wrote one hell of a book
JD’s like, "you want some fucking pitching? Here’s all the pitching you can stand. Now choke on it, bitches!"- RCCook
Just want to get my 2 cents in.
Reading someone’s post, jon’s only friend, I have no idea what goes on between coaches and players. I don’t know what it’s like to be a coach, never played sports, although I was in the military, so I do know what it’s like to be yelled at for mistakes. I can only appreciate what coaches do for their programs.
That being said, I still blame this on the coaches. We had the opportunity to win tonight. We were outcoached as well. In order to win a game, you need to out think your opponent. Just like a battle in a war, you need to be one step ahead. We were not on the winning side of that batle. We should have pulled Martinez, sorry kid you were trying but you just aren’t ready. We needed the game manager, the General Lee. He is not as good as Martinez, we all know this, but he has been in that situation. That is a coaching move.
We could have won and won big, but two things happened. One, after we got a big lead, the defense let up and started to play more bend dont break, not going for the throat, when they did, they were unstoppable. Two, the offense just seemed inept to recover fom a turnover. That is a mental mistake, you have to forget and charlie mike (army guys know what I’m talking about). That is the sad reality of it.
That being said, anyone who says not going to a bowl is an idiot. Flat out moron. We need those extra practices to deveolpe our players. You can never get enough practicing in, to a point.
We lost, but it was to OU. I am perfectly fine with that. But something needs to be done about the big game mentality. Yes, it took Tom Osborne a few (23) years to finally breakthrough. Patience is a virtue.
Go Big Red.

Tough loss tonight. Sucks. It just wasn’t our year. Bo still has some things to learn, and we have a QB that is still a little too green for the truly tough stuff.
But we gotta look on the bright side here folks. We are nationally relevant again, we have a coach that is learning and growing, a prodigy QB, a five-star recruit RB coming next year, a new conference that should garner us more exposure, and we have the legend of the blackshirts back.
More recruits will come, and we will be back on top again. It is our destiny. We are Nebraska football.

And not to reply to my own post but I will anyway
But I just saw a tweet from Bruce Feldman on ESPN saying Shawn Watson’s supposed to interview for the Vanderbilt job?
Just some thoughts.
The zone read hasn’t worked well since K-State. It’s based on speed and maybe our guys started wearing down mid-season to go along with the injuries. I’d like to see Nebraska focus more on a power run game than a speed run game.
Martinez’s accuracy and deer-in-the-headlights reaction once the pocket broke don’t was killer. A few times the TV cameras caught a close-up of Taylor when he was getting the play call from the sidelines. He was really squinting his eyes when he was doing this. Maybe he needs a new prescription for his contact lenses. That might help his accuracy problems too.
Good news folks!
We beat everyone in the Big 12 North this year…including ourselves! We actually beat ourselves 3 times, against Texas, Texas A&M, and now Oklahoma. Sometimes Shawn Watson is more effective as an extra defensive coordinator for the other team than he is an offensive coordinator for ours.
Big XII Thoughts
My heart is heavy as I write this. This is not how it should end! I am not sad because we lost to Oklahoma in the Big XII Championship, rather I am upset because Nebraska will never again have a chance to compete against teams like Oklahoma, Texas, MIZZOU, Texas A&M, and yes, even Colorado. Nebraska lost yesterday to team that played both well and with a lot of class. Oklahoma earned the right to play Nebraska by playing and winning against outstanding teams. I love that everyone in the state of Nebraska despises Texas, and I hate that out of 10 tries we have only beaten Texas twice. I love how the greatest fans in college football turn in to a bunch of whiny three year olds when we have a few calls go against us. I love that up until four years ago nobody in the state knew that Nebraska and Missouri play for a bell trophy each year, but after we lost it, it was a moral imperative to return the trophy bell to the state from which it came. I love that a K-State fan held up a sign that said "I hate Nebraska" and that nobody from Nebraska really cared because the K-State game is just another home game for Nebraskans who can’t get tickets in Lincoln. I love the fact that the longest continuous inter-university rivalry game is not Harvard vs. Yale, or Army vs. Navy, but Nebraska vs. Kansas. All of that stuff has just come to an end and I am going to miss the Big XII. I can’t help but think that our move to the Big X is a huge mistake. We lost to Oklahoma for several reasons, but everyone knows that one of the reasons is that some "Sooner Magic" was involved. My parents and grandparents all experienced "Sooner Magic", and now so have I. Every team in the Big XII has earned the right to play Nebraska (even Colorado). No team in the Big X has earned the right to play against Nebraska and when Nebraska does start playing against Big X teams, will anyone really care? Who cares if Nebraska beats Wisconsin, or Michigan, or Ohio State? Playing those teams is nothing compared to playing Colorado, Oklahoma or Texas. Today will be a hard day to get through…the only thing that keeps me going is my hate of two things, Bill Callahan and Iowa University. In case you don’t know, Iowans have this misconception Iowa is somehow superior to Nebraska. In addition, Iowans are smug, and their fans are a bunch of drunken bandwagon riders who can’t intelligently discuss football. As a state Iowa voted for Hillary Clinton and Gomer Pyle in the last presidential election. Folks, Iowa is like the worst of Texas and Colorado combined. Iowa must be destroyed each year! In my grief, the only thing that keeps me going is my quickly growing hatred of the Hawkeyes. So, in conclusion, goodbye Big XII. I am going to miss our Big IIX brothers the most, but I can’t help but wish that we had one more year to attempt to beat Texas and bring one more Big XII championship trophy back to Lincoln. Unfortunately, this will not happen. I will miss every one of the eleven teams we are leaving behind. Good luck and best wishes.
