2010 Holiday Bowl Post Game Thread: Who Gets to Pay For This?

Congratulations to Washington on playing a fine football game. Going into this game, everyone thought it would be a Nebraska ass-kicking. No. Not even close. Nice thing is - we see them again in September 2011.

I did this before, and I thought about it afterwards, and regretted it, but after this one, a complete embarrasment - someone needs to go. I don't care if it's Barney Cotton, whose line couldn't open holes against a Husky defense missing three starters on the defensive line.

The thing I'm most pissed about? I said all this in my keys to victory article. I'm not that bright. If I can figure this out, what's it say about our coaching staff?

I always thought the Cotton and Watson firing talk was much...

But not anymore. The oline doesn’t understand how to block Watson’s system. And to call a play action pass on 3rd and 11? The entire offensive side needs to be restructured. 2 straight years of wholly incompetent offense.

Granted, its crazy not to think that the players were motivated to play today, but still, so some sense of competence. Defense still played pretty well.

I'm MORE pissed because of how lousy we played.

I don’t mind a team selling out and coming up short. What pisses me off is incompetence like we saw tonight. No passion, no fire, and offensive cluelessness we haven’t seen since 2002.

Count me solidly in the Watson must go camp, and moving toward the Cotton must go camp as well. They’re nice guys, they work really hard at what they do, but we are sloppy, undisciplined and prone to wilting under pressure. Time to make a change.

NCAA botched that call bigtime.

I’ve got no beef with OSU, but serious questions about the NCAA after everything that’s happened this year. USC, Newton, UNC, AJ Green, your guys – the penalties seem arbitrary, illogical and without a uniform code of enforcement. If it weren’t for the fact that the actual games are awesome, I’d want nothing to do with the NCAA whatsoever.

Offensive line play from SDSU game? Check.
Rattled TMart from OU game? Check.
Uninspired defensive play from ISU game? Check.
Ball security from pretty much every game? Check.

Hell, throw in a little 1996 ASU with the safety. Even Henery shanked a punt. I honestly don’t know how to feel. I’m stunned, and yet somehow this feels like par for the course for this team in a bad game.

I, once again,

will stick with what I said during the first quarter of the Big 12 game. Martinez should not have been in the game. I honestly think something happened to his mind, his psyche,
his ego, or something, about 5 games ago. It’s as if his mind finally realized that he’s now in the big leagues, and he lost all of his confidence.

And, as I said at the end of the last thread, they should have taken much more time with him, to match his incredible talent with a more mature mind.

Okay, rip these notions apart.

Something certainly changed after that Mizzou game.

I never bought the “Martinez is a good passer” line trotted out by the coaching staff. The OSU game appears to have been an aberration, not a sign of improvement. Good defenses make him look clueless. We need coaches who can get our guys to improve as the year goes on, but in 2008-2009 we regressed offensively, with last year’s bowl game being an obvious exception.

If Bo holds on to Wats, I’ll have some serious questions about next year. Considering the schedule we’ve got lined up, 9 wins might be a bit of a stretch.

9 wins might be a bit of a stretch

MIGHT BE?! It flat-out won’t happen. If “this” is Nebraska’s offense next year, Nebraska will lose to Iowa, tOSU, MSU, and Penn State. Possibly Washington, again, Fresno won’t be a gimme, neither will Michigan or Northwestern.

I’m not predicting a 4-8 record next year, but 150 yards to a sub-top100 ranked defense won’t cut it in D-II…

Watson summed up

Mostly bad results with a few “aberrations” thrown in here and there to make you think he’s a good OC. Seriously, take away that Arizona game last season, and all the games against the “little sisters of the poor” and what do we have out of this guy? Consistently poor results!

The only complete games that Watson actually did a good job in the past two years against BCS teams was Arizona, Washington (the FIRST time), Kansas State, and Oklahoma State. And Kansas State might as well count as a little sister of the poor. Then we have a few games with just ONE good quarter. Missouri 09 and 10, and the Big 12 championship game against Oklahoma this year.

what i still don't get

and i’ve said over and over – is that last year, they were worried constantly about Green’s confidence. This year, they’ve thrown him to the wolves.

One of the telling things

about Taylor’s leadership qualities came from a comment from one of the O-linemen, (can’t remember which one), about the difference between Taylor and whoever was in the game.
He said something about voice inflections and leadership…thought that was telling.

But that’s the difference between me, a female, and you guys. We sense things differently.

From the time I read about Taylors upbringing, it totally changed my mind on how this kid should have been brought along.

I'm shocked at our offensive inepitude

I mean, we got ripped for having like 110 yards against TEXAS last year! Getting held to like 30 more than that by Washington is a worse performance by far. Someone needs to be fired. I know we weren’t expecting a great performance, but COME on. We were going up against Washington’s 2nd string defensive line and got stoned all night. No passing threat whatsoever.

Speaking of which, no Zac Lee? Why?

Offensive Tallent:

There may just not be much. Against teams with a defense ranked in the top half (i.e. better than 60th) Nebraska went 1-3. The 1 win against #41 Mizzou comes with 1 loss against #84 Washington at a neutral site. That’s pretty much a wash. It’s not like the teams from the top half had dominant defenses either. Sure Texas was in the top 10, but they’re offense is so bad they’re not a bowl team and the game was in Lincoln. Oklahoma and A&M are #57 and #50 respectively.

The average defensive rank of the teams Nebraska beat is 83, and that’s not even counting the win at home over FCS South Dakota State.

by BigFatScott on Dec 31, 2010 1:02 AM CST reply actions

Talent isn't the issue

Keep in mind, we piled on 56 against this exact same defense (actually, this defense wasn’t missing 3 starting linemen in September). We have issues, but I don’t think talent is one of them. Sure there are areas that we could improve, but we have been underachieving in a big way with what talent we do have.

oh come on,

over 500 yards on a healthy Uduh defense 3 months ago to this, and its a talent issue? That A&M defense was a sieve to everybody and so was OU (ranked in the 70s nationally pre Nebraska) Udub D was horrible all year.

Its is impossible to logically believe that this isn’t 99% a coaching issue.

Wisconsin is flat killing people with big slow guys.

The difference? They are better coached, with a cohesive offensive mindset and a determination to do what it takes to win. Talent-wise, I would take our offense over Wisconsin’s every day of the week and twice on Sunday, yet they’re in the Rose Bowl and we just got our asses kicked in the Holiday Bowl.

My understanding

Was that we would be “worked into” the programming sometime this spring. Whether that will extend to the spring game or not is anyone’s guess, but you’d have to think that was one of the things they were eyeing.

Love to try to kill their opponents, have had much more success recently than the men, but no one seem to really like them here. So sad.

I covered volleyball a lot more before, but the site has grown to the point that its… overwhelming for me to cover anything but football.

I would love to see the other sports covered more, but I can’t do that. Just not enough…. time.

One thing I noticed these last few games

Is that having the best FG kicker in the country was totally lost on Watson’s play calling. In this game and the OU game, numerous situations where Neb was at midfield, it was 3rd and long, and watson decides to trust Martinez in the obvious passing down. Martinez gets sacked, and Neb is out of FG position. Watson should have recognized where he was and simply ran to get maybe 5 more yards to setup a FG.

Once upon a time we were 9-1...

I actually don’t really care that we lost. I mean honestly the day this bowl game was announced this season died. If anything else we can look forward to some staff changes (hopefully) and a great recruiting class. This is obviously a VERY low point, but definitely not “bottoming out” like 2007. Still a 10-4 season, and that’s a bit below average around here but still not horrible. Better times are ahead.

Also, I don’t think Taylor Martinez should be the quarterback for this football team next fall. Anyone else with me on that one?

Sadly, I agree.

To let go of a physical talent like him will be hard, but it might be time to let him go and grow in another venue. And that really hurts to say.

This is a reposted comment from Husker Sound Off

But it is simply the best way to say it-

“I for one am getting tired of Bo Pelini getting a free pass. Yes he’s a brilliant defensive mind, but guess what, he’s not being paid to call the defense any more, he’s being paid to head coach. You can’t head coach by calling a defensive game and staring into space and ignoring the most pathetic offensive display in generations! Now he says in the postgame conference that Watson will be back? If he means it, then he’s as big of a retard when it comes to offense as he is a genius when it comes to defense. If he keeps Watson, then maybe Osborne should give Bo the boot as well.”

by Billgrip on Dec 31, 2010 1:47 AM CST up reply actions

I don't Bo can really say much in a post game interview.

Other than to try and show support at the time. But he needs to fix things on offense, and Watson/Cotton has got to be #1.

Terrible way to end a season

Definitely there are some better offensive minds out there to run your offense. I’d consider canning the offensive line coach immediately.

I feel for you guys falling flat like that to a team you stomped earlier this year. Hopefully it’ll light up a spark under OU’s ass to be ready to play, anything can happen in a bowl game.

by Toby H on Dec 31, 2010 1:53 AM CST reply actions

Thanks for the compassion

This is pretty much awful. We can only hope changes are made. All we need is consistency… and we’d probably be Big 12 champs this year and maybe more. But instead the Oklahoma game was basically the perfect picture of how our season went offensively- first half, looked great, almost too good to be true. Second half, looked like a kitten being slowly ran over by a steamroller. It was horrifying.

by Billgrip on Dec 31, 2010 1:55 AM CST up reply actions   1 recs

Oh and Billgrip

You will be pleased to know, I will no longer defend Watson. While I feel most of our offensive woes are still on the line, our quarterbacks weren’t ready, our offense lacked focus, and our playcalling made no sense half the time. I feel like the guy has been unfairly treated at times, but there’s no excuse for this steaming pile that he supposedly spent 3.5 weeks putting together.

by jdhusker on Dec 31, 2010 2:04 AM CST up reply actions

About the only hedge on that

Is that I think Watson is a good offensive mind….for a West Coast passing attack. We’re not bowling in 2008 if it isn’t for a pretty damn good offense. But its clear what Pelini wants on offense, and its not where Watsons strengths as a coach are. Both parties just need to part ways, I think everyone would be better off.

by jdhusker on Dec 31, 2010 2:15 AM CST up reply actions   1 recs

I don't get it though

Watson has been recruiting players too right? Why isn’t he recruiting players for the type of offense he knows how to run? I feel like he has used Nebraska in the past two seasons as an experiment to try a bunch of new stuff for when he is a head coach someday and can go whatever direction he wants. Oh and the Taylor Martinez experiment failed by the way…and the fans have to pay for it because once again we sit here at the end of the season wondering what could have been with a consistent offense.

by Billgrip on Dec 31, 2010 2:35 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah what happened to TM was kinda baffling

Flashes of being unstoppable at times (imagine the K-State and OSU games consistently rolled into one package). But after that injury….deer in the headlights is the only way to describe it. Before that, he looked like a very promising freshman. Now, I wonder if he isn’t permanently damaged goods.

I posted this up above but it applies better down here

It’s like the movie Space Jam. You know when the monsters came from outer space and took all the good basketball player’s talent and then those guys suddenly couldn’t dribble anymore? I’m pretty sure that something like that happened to T-Magic and his talent is being used by some creepy monstar in a football arena in outer space somewhere. We need to send Eric Crouch up there to take the monstar on and try to get it back!

by Billgrip on Dec 31, 2010 2:46 AM CST up reply actions

And we also have to wonder what the offense will look like next season

And the line all national pundits will use during the offseason- “It looked like Nebraska found an offense after the first 10 games of 2010, but in 3 of the last 4 games they proved they actually didn’t. If this team gets a consistent offense to go with their consistent defense, they will be good.”

by Billgrip on Dec 31, 2010 2:48 AM CST up reply actions

Agreed and thanks

Good luck to you against UConn. OU is the only other Big 12 team I wanted to win this bowl season (not doing too bad so far eh?).

Different season, same result

We thought this season was our season, and when we were 9-1 it certainly looked like it could be. Turns out, this team finished 10-4, same as last season. There was no improvement. A little better on offense overall (downright awful at the end though), and a little worse on defense. It was still pretty much the same as last season, it was just a different route to get there and another year wasted off my life. Unfortunately, this sucks so much worse than last year because it ended so poorly.

by Billgrip on Dec 31, 2010 2:31 AM CST reply actions

Seriously, Watson’s offense scored ONE touchdown in the last 7 quarters of the season…and honestly that TD throw should have been picked off. Pathetic.

I know it hurts

But we haven’t won a bowl game in a decade. If you want your revenge you can take it in September. To whomever came out to Seattle, it was a pleasure to have you. That Lavonte Davis is a helluva stud too, not looking forward to seeing him again. If we all remember 5 years back, we can all agree it’s more fun to have both our programs on the rise. I’ll admit the win was a pleasure, but the loss couldn’t have happened to a nicer group of fans. See you in a few months!

Hell, I am beginning to miss Bill Callahan

how disgusting and embarrassing………..old gum-chomping raving lunatic PeeLeeny really did a whopping job

Did this bunch ever peak too early…………….the worst Texas team in a dozen years comes to town, goat slaps us all over memorial, and ends the joke-of-a-Heisman campaign of TayMart………………….lets see – 8 straight quarters against UT with a SINGLE OFFENSIVE TOUCHDOWN – wow………………short of the last minute punt return, its an even more embarrassing score.

Anyone that watched it saw us slapped around in the trenches ALL DAY aginst an undersized UT D-line, and a very average O-line of theirs snuffed Crick annd company all day

Dropped passes? I recall Hornz dropped 2 IN the end zone, so spare that weak PeeLeeny-like drivel

Other than wins over Droolwater cowboys and a psychotic Mizzou, our season sucked……….all the points and stats run up early in the season were a cruel joke, and the GoodShipLollipop went down like the Titanic last night

Ozborne needs to retire and take that public embarrassment, PeeLeeny and his rants, rage, chawin’ gum like a psycho with him…………Tom did NOTHING without his emptying the jailhouses in LA , New jersey criminals and “unlimited partial qualifiers” – some moral high ground of the Big * scum like OU & Buffies huh ? Dont tell me about a single MNC, since Devaney – the 90s stuff was a ’roided-up gang of thugs, like Toms poster boy, Lawrence Phillips

Fire Tom, Fire Bo……………and i just cant wait for scenic November saturdays in Bloomington & Camp Randall etc

he never won a single MNC of which any real Husker could be proud……………he just emptied the jail cells and gang membership on each coast and brought them to Lincoln to play semi-pro ball

Hell, he made Switzer look upright

Tom needs to resign, as does BoBo-the-screaming-cursing-ranting- whining Buffoon

1-9 record vs Texas in 15 years……………………sheesh

Shocked, awed and VERY HAPPY!

I think the lesson here is never take your opponent for granted.I am a life-long UW Huskie fan. I have painfully watched them go from an elite program to the abyss of horrid. I also have the utmost respect for Nebraska. I always rooted for their program (when not playing the Pac-10) when Tom Osbourne was coach and felt their pain when the program was also in the abyss of horrid. I watched the first meeting of the Huskies and Huskers this year and was very impressed with the coaching, discipline and raw-talent the Huskers displayed. They CRUSHED Washington and I was convinced the Huskers would be playing for a National Championship as they had all of the tools. I really don’t know what happened (Martinez getting hurt didn’t help) with their end of season woes, but when I learned the Huskies were playing them in the Holiday Bowl…I was disappointed because I knew the Huskies were going to get CRUSHED again. How shocking last night’s game was. I couldn’t believe that was the same Nebraska team that humiliated my Huskies. Any other Saturday, I say the Huskers would beat my Huskies 9 times out of 10. For you Husker fans, don’t get down too much because your team is way too talented and well coached to let this game affect next year. When our teams meet again next year, I again will be expecting another Husker victory as Washington isn’t quite at your level yet…give them 1 more year and they will again be an elite program like yours.

Looking forward to our next meeting!

Underachievers

This season we definately look like a group of underachievers. Bo had us believing that he had kids ready to step up for the big game, only to be let down time and again. How many times have we heard “we were outcoached” this year? At what point do we start looking at Bo instead of just Wats and Cotton? This is the most disappointing 10-4 season I can ever think of. I know I should be happy about 10 wins, and in the big picture I am, but I cant help but question the heart of our team right now. One thing I do know is that the Big10 is full of overachievers like Iowa, Northwestern, and Illinois along with actual good teams like Wisconsin and OSU. Unless we can find some real heart to match our talent we are going to see a few losing seasons starting next year.

by Conspiracy* on Jan 1, 2011 12:09 PM CST reply actions

Coach's heads

After 2 seasons of inconsistent performance by the offense, offensive coaching heads need to roll. If Pellini doesn’t do it then we are in for yet another same season. Pellini is not above the finger-pointing either. If he’s not to old to do the job, Osborne needs to kick some butt. In my 5 decades of watching Husker football, this loss is one of the most inept and heart-breaking games ever. My heart isn’t just broken but ripped out and stomped on. I only hope the French didn’t see this game.
