Dear Mr. Bates... Shawn Watson is the finest....
Shawn Watson is the finest assistant the University of Nebraska has ever had.
OK, so some of you may disagree with that statement. But with the news coming out that the Miami (OH) head coaching job is essentially a coin flip between Shawn Watson and Ohio State co-defensive coordinator Luke Fickell, I figured Wats could use all the support that Husker nation could muster.
I've been rather vocal about my disdain for Shawn Watson as a play-caller, but truth be told, Watson's a pretty good coach and a great recruiter. If Nebraska loses him to Miami (OH), they'll have some pretty big shoes to fill. I guess to sum it up, we know what to expect out of him.
If Shawn Watson does become the next head coach at Miami (OH), who would you like to see replace him?

Merry Christmas
What a nice present that would be
Mike Leach
We know that his offenses can put up stupid numbers, and with even an average defense, we would be unstoppable!

Be careful what you wish for...
Remember that Bo is still the head coach, the new OC will have to bend to how BO wants to run the team. I just don’t see some hotshot OC capable of putting up “stupid numbers” that can handle what I have to imagine is a very short leash.
that's not the only thing
other key is how well he gets along with the offensive line coach – and in this case that’s Barney Cotton.
speaking of a leash – i wonder how much pressure is on Pelini to keep older Husker coaches like Cotton around if he thinks they’re under performing.
If you remember – Osborne requested that Solich keep his old assistants, which Frank did for a while. Maybe Solich was hamstringed by that (although who could have foreseen what an egomaniac Steve Pederson would become).

Everything I've heard...
…suggests that Bo and Barney get along just fine. Remember, Bo brought Barney back and gave him the “assistant head coach” title.
Honestly, I wouldn’t be completely shocked if Barney didn’t become the new offensive coordinator.
And before anybody reacts to that, remember that I don’t think anybody considers Jammal Lord to be the prototypical quarterback for what Nebraska is going to run. Don’t base your opinion on what NU ran in 2003.

Either Barney Cotton Or...
Tim Albin, Frank’s OC at Ohio. He runs the “Pistol” offense. Frank said in an interview on 1620 a few weeks back that he likes the “pistol” because it’s a “run downhill” type of offense. Just what the doctor ordered.

Can I base it on his ISU offense?
Cause they sucked too. And after his ISU coaching stint you didn’t see a lot of coaching offers come his way.
Nebraska can and should do better than Cotton as the OC. He has shown nothing to make me feel that he’s qualified or improved enough for that position.

I don't disagree
with Jlew’s sentiment. I remember being at an ISU game, with an older ISU fan standing next to me telling me the plays they’d run against us when Cotton was OC. Granted, I don’t think you always need to “fool ’em” as much as out-execute them, but I was surprised when the guy kept calling what was going to happen.
It would be a safe guess that whomever takes over OC is whomever has learned the most from Watson. I like Watson’s spread concepts, and I’m not entirely sure him leaving is a great idea unless we replace him with someone better (hahahahaha – I don’t get to make that decision, easy for me to say, hey?).

Bryan Harsin - Boise St. Off. Coordinator
Has had scoring offenses have been ranked first, 20th, fourth and second in the nation in his four seasons.
Shell out the money NU, clearly Boise St. has great production on offense and this guy can develop all sorts of non-five star talent into a premier TEAM!

First I think it will be Gilmore not Cotten
But how about either ( and please husker nation be kind ) Major Applewhite who I don’t see leaving or some other coach of That nature

It'd be Beck before Gilmore.
The only two feasible internal OC options, I think, are Beck and Cotton.

The
Boise State guy sounds like a viable option. Although I am afraid if he would come to NU it wouldn’t be for very long if he was successful, someone would pluck him away to be a head coach. And remember, Watson hasn’t been hired away yet but it is obvious that he would like to move on with all the interviews he has done. Can’t say as I would blame him he hasn’t been given a lot of love the past two seasons.
^^this^^
The problem we have is that our HC is not the OC. Whoever we hire, will always be looked at to be a HC somewhere else, as long as they are successful. It is just the nature of the beast with the situation we have.

do we care?
this whole idea that you’re going to hang on to coaches forever should be dismissed.
for one – coaches don’t stay anywhere anymore. young coaches want to move up the ladder, become coordinators and head coaches, and who can blame them?

But,
do we want the same situation that Oklahoma State is in with their OC. It is a double edged sword with great success comes the inevitable reality that coaches will continue to move on to better positions. What a good situation to be in. It probably won’t matter much I doubt Watson goes anywhere. Hopefully next year he can keep most everyone healthy, mainly Martinez, and all will go well as it did before the injury in the Mizzou game. We never looked the same after that. Because we know that Wats will get out coached most of the time if he doesn’t have superior athletes to execute his play calling. But I suppose that is the case most of the time with any coordinator. Superior athletes definetely helps make a play caller look better.
the key
with Dana Holgersen is that he’d been an OC for a while. It wasn’t the case of a position coach moving to a coordinator spot, and then a year later moving to a HC position.
So…. it wouldn’t bother me to have a three to four-year cycle where position coaches would move to coordinating and then move on if they’re good enough. Each one would bring something new to the staff, so maybe more ideas would mean a better overall staff.

Honestly...
The thing that worries me most if Watson gets the MU job is that he’ll need a defensive staff and Marvin Sanders is ripe for a DC job.

Mack Brown
Turner Gill
Urban Meyer (maybe it’s just head coaching that he can’t do)
Mark Mangino
Bill Callahan
I don't really understand why Mangino's name keeps coming up.
Bo seems to take the team-as-a-family concept very, very seriously, and with Mangino’s (alleged) past, he doesn’t seem to fit that mold at all.

Joe Paterno: "Depends what she looks like."
