Jim Delany: Big Ten Will Consider Changing Division Names
Jim Delany was interviewed on WGN radio yesterday, and said that the Big Ten is surprised at the reaction of fans to the new division names. They don't want to make any snap judgements, but apparently are going to reevaluate the division names. "It shows we did not connect" as 90% disapproval ratings indicate, and they aren't in the business of alienating fans.
Translation: "Boy we screwed it up, and now we're trying to figure out how to fix it."
And just when being a Legend was starting to grow on me, just as Delany said it would.
CNBC's Darren Rovell suggests that the Big Ten will have a fan balloting on the division names.

Hey, if they're looking for suggestions, y'all got any left?????

I'm surprised about the ninety percent number
Because I have yet to meet Anybody That likes the names. Figured it would be in the high ninetys

So Wisky is in the East...
…and Michigan/Michigan State is in the West? Would be just as confusing as “Who’s in the Legends, and who’s in the Leaders?”
Yeah, I know some of the NFL conference alignments are like that, but it’s still stupid.
Now, if they realigned the divisions to match East and West (I wanna play Wisconsin every year), I’m all for that.
But
Michigan is “the champions of the west!” and MSU is west of Michigan.
I say honor the vets and use something like Midway and Normandy. Then you could have “the battle of Midway” when UM and UNL meet up.

Just one?
MSU and Michigan would be east of Indiana, Purdue, Wisconsin and Illinois. So a third of the “West” would be east of two-thirds of the “East”
And the other NU would join them in being east of Wisconsin and Illinois. That means that half of the “West” would be east of a third of the “East”.
They are just going to reverse the names.
LEADERS: Nebraska, Michigan, Michigan State, Northwestern, Minnesota, Iowa.
LEGENDS: Ohio State, Penn State, Wisconsin, Illinois, Purdue, Indiana.

The rest of my post disappeared
but my point was that 5/6 teams in legends claim at least one national title, only three of them do in the leaders division.
Schadenfreude ist die schoenste Freude
If you draw a horizontal-ish line from Ann Arbor, MI to Lincoln, NE You get all the “Legends” on the North side and all the “Leaders” except Wisconsin on the South side. The Badgers would just be the B1G equivalent of the (NFC East) Dallas Cowboys.
Flip-flop
Northwestern & Wisconsin to the opposite division and north-south works for me.

My reaction:

North/South are about as good as it's going to get.
Right? I know the geography is a little goofy, but Wisco is just going to have to deal.
I did like the old NHL divisions that were named after people: Patrick, Smythe, Norris, Adams (?). If we were going to go that route we could have the Devaney (coached at Mich. State before Wyoming and NU, also FROM Saginaw, MI) and the Paterno/Hayes, either/or. FUN FACT: Bob Devaney was born a scant 11 years before Joe Paterno! Ha ha ha!
Lakes and Plains doesn’t work for Michigan (The Great Lakes State).
Also: Stagg Division/Grange Division
Steel (PA, OH, IL, IN, WI) Division/Farm (IA, NE, MN, MI)Division
Still, the clear choice is North/South.
"I learned long ago, never to wrestle with a pig. You get dirty, and besides, the pig likes it."-George Bernard Shaw
Conference expansion may be done for the year, but not forever
North/South is currently the simple logical solution, but it most likely wouldn’t work long term. Whatever they come up with, has to allow for future expansion without rehashing all of this again in a few years.
It doesn’t make sense to commit to geographically divided divisions now and face the possibility of having to either restructure or rename them again later if the teams being added don’t conveniently fall on opposite sides of whatever imaginary line is drawn.
East/West worked better in my mind
The split is the Indiana/Illinois border.
Quite frankly, I think they are setting themselves up to restructure the divisions at regular intervals. Or at least they should. IF…the #1 priority of Division Alignment is competitive balance, AND…say in 10 years one division has won 8 of 10 championships and inter-divisional games, then don’t you HAVE to restructure the divisions? If you don’t, then you show that “competitive balance” was a bull[bleep] reason.
Geographical gives you the most stable divisions. If you do add teams, if they’re both east of the IL/IN border, move the east/west “border” to accomodate. Same if they’re both west.
I guess I should perhaps specify
That I’m thinking the divisions themselves would need to be changed for this, not just the names. I don’t think geographical names work for the divisions as currently aligned.
That's not funny
In an attempt to maintain at least a shred of my own sanity, I refuse to even consider this a possibility. I don’t think I could handle repeating this fiasco every couple of years.
Whatever happened...
to Black and Blue division? I didn’t think those names were that terrible
This is why Jim Delany > Dan Beebe
If this were the Big 12, Beebe would be filing fake police reports about imaginary threats he received from fans in the Legends division. Also, Beebe probably wouldn’t even respond to everyone’s complaints until next season sometime when he’d issue a statement somewhere along the lines of “We believe that Legends & Leaders are pretty good division names.”
Don't forget, Beebe would follow up by complaining he wasn't informed 3 months in advance...
…so Texas would have time to give him an opinion.
I wouldn’t mind naming after the last program to win the division - gives a little something extra to play for.
Most like the Great Lakes Division as 1 name (1 division does have every state with a team bordering a Great Lake).
Western is another option – not in terms of geography but in reference to the conference’s original name.
Directions Combinations (North-South, North East – North West, etc.) isn’’t bad – if we are numerically challenged we might as well be geographically challenged as well. It also presents a chance to chastise people in the same way we get to laugh at them for forgetting the conference doesn’t really have just 10 teams.
Picking colors as names isn’t bad.
I wouldn’t mind an homage to former coaches or players (Heisman Winners?)
