Nebraska's Prince Amukamara, Taylor Martinez, Lavonte David Capture Big 12 Honors
The 2010 All-Big 12 football honors were announced today, with Husker cornerback Prince Amukamara garnering Defensive Player of the Year, quarterback Taylor Martinez getting Offensive Freshman of the Year, and linebacker Lavonte David getting Newcomer of the Year.
It's the second year in a row that a Blackshirt has won Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year as last year's award went to Ndamukong Suh.
Ricky Henry was the only First Team selection for the Husker offense, while Pierre Allen, Jared Crick, Lavonte David, Eric Hagg were selections from the defense.
Second team Nebraska players include running back Roy Helu Jr, wide receiver and returner Niles Paul, kicker/punter Alex Henery, defensive end Cameron Meredith and cornerback Alfonzo Dennard.
A couple of surprises - first of all, it's nice to see Cameron Meredith get selected on second team as a sophomore, second - it's shocking that Alex Henery isn't first team, but Dan Bailey from Oklahoma State is first team and he is one of the Lou Groza Award finalists. I suspect that if someone took the time to look at stats for both players there might be an explanation (or not).

Great representation for the Huskers.
If you include the punter, nine of twelve starting defenders made first- or second-team All-Big 12. Tremendous across the board.
It was basically a toss-up between Henery and Bailey for first-team PK, but Henery’s four-year body of work is staggering.
Reporter: "What would it take to get you to spend three or four days outside, on concrete?"
Joe Paterno: "Depends what she looks like."
No love for Henery - GAH.
The only consolation is he should make millions over a long and illustrious career in the NFL. Seriously, though, I DO. NOT. GET. why he doesn’t get more love.

Agreed.
He gets lots of love from us though. He had BY FAR the loudest and longest ovation from the fans on Senior Day. Both when he was announced on the big board and when he was recognized for Sr. day.
Heck, I think my wife loves him more than she loves me. ;)

Unreal.
He’s the greatest kicker in Nebraska history (and we’ve had some pretty dang good kickers), and quite possibly the best kicker in college football right now, and he’s never even been first-team all-conference. I just don’t get it, either.

Hopefully
the lack of “success” defined by being named all conference convinces Dennard to come back. I love that guy!

agreed Dennard back
Would be a very good thing!
Let’s pray that he talks to Prince and sees what staying that extra year did for him.

Pelini said in his newscoference today (at least I think it was) that Dennard hasn’t given any indication that he’s going to jump to the NFL. In fact I think he might have mentioned something about Dennard being in a state of mind that he was going to stay.
Dennard
really needs another year in college anyway….. plus, next year he won’t be overshadowed by Prince. It’ll be interesting to see where/if Hagg gets drafted…

Bailey was 24-28 on FGs and 65-66 on PATs for 137 pts. He’s 2-3 from 50+, 6-7 from 40-49, and 16-18 from 20-39.
Alex, was 16-17 on FGs and 51-51 on PATs. He’s 1-2 from 50+ (2nd blocked I believe), 7-7 from 40-49, and 8-8 from 20-39. He had 1 rush for 27 yds and totaled 99 pts (down from 110 the previous 2 years).
He had the advantage of playing for the Cowboys and their hyperactive offense offense, so he had better stats. But Henery is still more reliable and I’d take him any day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Since the topic here is awards:
Husker coach John Papuchis is one of the four finalists for the FootballScoop special teams coordinator of the year. You can go to their site and vote for him.
