A Serious Question for the CN Community
It's a question about trolls. We seem to have picked up a lot of them in the past few weeks, and I have the ability to pretty much rid the site of them - it's a question of whether I want to turn on that feature.
I can set the site so that anyone new has to wait at least 24 hours before they're able to post any comments. I have not done that in the past because I wanted to make sure we didn't cut people off if they were really looking for help. That and the fact that we're growing our community, and I didn't want to hinder that process.
Given that, I'd like to hear your thoughts about turning on the waiting period functionality. I know from talking to other site admins that it will kill troll activity, but is it something that we should do?

Tough Call
Many of them just want to come over and talk football. I’d hate to ruin it for them just because of a few that have diarrhea of the mouth and constipation of the brain.
I AM VIKING, HEAR ME ROAR!!!
Please.
Amazing timing. I was actually just stopping by to snag your email address so I could let you know that I wouldn’t be coming back due to the trolls and what has happened to the dialogue. If, in speaking with other site admins, this will significantly improve the situation, then you have my full support.
Proud winner of the 2010 Corn Nation March Madness Tournament.
Obvious troll is being obvious.
By this I mean, we should be able to tolerate a few trolls slipping in and then dropping the ban hammer on them.
I've joined a handful of SB sites,
and I hated that 24-hour wait rule. I can handle some trolling if the ban-hammer is dropped in a timely manner. No more nice guy, I’ll give you another chance, etc.

I agree with a quick hammer...
the only instance that really stands out for me is the idiot last night that said he had a brother on the team and TM was out. Trolling is going to happen no matter where you go, if everyone could agree on just ignoring them completely – perhaps they would go away?
True fans would wait the 24hrs and be ok with it…I see nothing but growth for CN and think that having to wait isn’t going to kill that.
Either way is a win, but I say for now just keep a heavy hand unless it really gets out of control.
Could we possibly
give ban privileges to more members? I think that the 24 hour rule sucks when I go to other pages so I generally never post there if they have it. I think if a few more members had the capability to ban people it would hinder trolling as one of the members who can ban will probably see it going on fairly quick.
I'll put my vote in for the quick hammer.
I don’t think the trolling is at the point where a waiting period is necessary. Just got to keep a tighter watch on things at this point.
I like the idea of people being able to jump in immediately if they want to comment during or after a game or a big news story – that’s the way I’ve joined most of the SB Nation blogs I’ve posted on. Some really good conversation can happen that way, but only if you’re aggressive about keeping the bad eggs out.
I suspect
they’ll go away after this season or at least we’ll see a lot less of it. That being said, it wouldn’t bother me to start the new policy. I doubt there’s anything to be said here that can’t wait 24 hours.
The good and the bad.
It is a double edged sword with the 24 waiting period. You might be able to filter out the trolls, but someone who is really determined to rile up a fanbase is going to wait. It’d be better just to have a quick ban.
On the other hand, if you have someone who may discover the site on a game day, it happens, and they want to join in as soon as possible. It might frustrate them and cause them to leave. I don’t really know how the internet blogging community works when it comes to making money, if it’s possible? But I figure that you would want as many members as possible. That also comes down to someone wanting to join will be patient and wait the 24 period. Like I said, I don’t know, just my opinion.
But my vote is for a quick ban. Stop it at the source.

I'd suggest
.. one troll warning & then toss out. Lot of good points here; it can be pretty obvious who is trolling, they just show up to stir crap up. Ignore them and the fun goes away, and the reader base still continues with the business at hand.
Granted, I don't know what down it is..
Is there a way for SBNation to expand that 24 hour logic?
I generally don’t mind the 24-hour period I’ve noticed on other SB Boards, and I’d rather have that than nothing. But I’d like to see functionality around how long someone’s been an SBNation member.
Take this past week, and aTm fans. If one of their regular posters came to CN this past week and wanted to post, more than likely they’re not a troll and I wouldn’t want them to have to wait. However, the trolls that we’ve been picking up here sign up and post within minutes…just to troll. Those are the ones I’d like to have the waiting period on.
Since I'm a troll at this site I have an interesting perspective.
But the 24 hour thing is handy. It keeps the stupidity down. I join an opposing site early in the week, and thus have no problem. Double t nation has that policy. Or just employ a swift ban hammer, but then you have to monitor the boards more closely. Could you turn that feature on for gameday and turn it off on Sunday?

What is a troll?
Anyone who disagrees with the prevailing wind? Anyone who discredits “your” team? I think it serves the community a disservice by banning a troll. I have called for that from time to time at BON and I don’t think I’ve been in the right to do so. The internet is a wacky place. You can blow off a lot of steam duking it out with a board foreigner. And I agree that is not a very adult way to handle the situation either. I do concur with Cheesycorn (see what I did there). He and I kinda went at it at BON after our game earlier this year. He is a great sport and likes to work all the angles. He’s got the right idea, IMO. I think I was even banned/warned by Jon. Comes and goes with the territory. I remember wanting to join in the discussion at Bruins Nation during the run up to our game with them and had to wait. By the time I could log in and join the conversation, the velocity of the conversation petered out and I did not get my 2 cents worth so to speak. Squirrel is correct. A double edge sword for sure. I can certainly see where the wait period makes It easier to deal with the “ban the troll” and monitoring. I’m glad I am already of member of Corn Nation. You guys are real pro’s.
If your first two sentences are the ‘qualifiers’, then a blog manager may need to shut the whole thing down for 24 hours, because members can get a little nuts with their commentary, angst and vitriol. Good god, after Wisky took us to the woodshed, fans were going crazy with ‘fire Pryor, bench Tressle’ (maybe it was the other way around). Sensible discourse didn’t prevail until the following day. Hell, we’re fans..
Granted, I don't know what down it is..
Sorry
Too lazy to come up with a pun-erific jab at your username to retaliate with. You win this round. :-)

How about turning it on for the remainder of our stay in the Big 12, and then take it off when we moce to the Big 10?
A lot of Big 10 people will be coming here for the first time so we dont want to hinder them to much, but we already know how the Big 12 fans are going to come across for us and we might as well skip that from them.

There are probably several
Big 10’ers (I for one) that stop by this site time to time. I started visiting it right after the announcement that Huskers were coming to Big 10; several Ohio State sites linked this site in a way to “get to know your new neighbors”. There may even be a couple sites that link this site as part of their ‘goings on in the Big 10’. You’ve been welcomed as part of the Conference since Day One.
Granted, I don't know what down it is..
It wouldn't affect (effect?) you though since you are already a member of cornnation and would be grandfathered in, like Im assuming we all would.
And we appreciate you guys welcoming us to the family. Even before the announcement I’ve always had a very high opinion of the Big 10 and their fans. You guys aer the epitome of class, something that has been going downhill recently in Big 12 land.

This is a good point.
Hadn’t thought about that. Big Ten fans have been (almost) all class so far, and I expect it’ll remain mostly the same through 2011.

Let ’em troll. Take the higher road from that of many other SBNatioin blogs; those who ban fans of other teams for simply voicing an opposing point of view.
Heck, most of what I’ve seen aren’t even necessarily trolls, just other fans taking a prime opportunity to take a tough loss and rub it in.
Plus, when you turn on the wait-to-post feature, I bet it turns away a lot of potential new posters.
just other fans taking a prime opportunity to take a tough loss and rub it in.
I don’t know, I always thought that was the definition of trolling.

I think we all need to grow some thicker skin...
It’s an open forum, you are going to have to take the good with the bad. I guess I don’t know what a troll is, but if someone wants to rub in a touch loss, who really cares so as that person is making a relevent, coherent point.

Trolls can be helpful
I’ve been reading Corn Nation for quite a while but never post. I’ll say that I for one have found trolls to be very helpful in learning more about this community… not by what they post but by the excellent responses many of you have made to their nonsense.
Just my thoughts for what their worth.
I'll agree with that....
let them be until they become so belligerent and disrespectful that it calls for a ban. They do know how to start a stalled thread rolling with facts, by the totally ignorant posts they make!

A second to that
It’s not just that I find them helpful — I also enjoy seeing them get roasted. But I know that I’m not in the majority in that regard and I understand the regular posters here might not want the flames. That sort of thing, too, is more fun to read as a lurker than a regular poster.
At any rate, the threat of the waiting period finally prompted me to get off of my rear end and create an account and join CN, so I don’t really have an opinion on it at all any longer.

I agree with the thick skin guy. I don’t like the wait period. After Leach was fired last year, I wanted to get in on the discussion so bad because I had a lot of questions, but couldn’t. All I could do was follow along until my wait period was up. I fired a few shots a year ago on the MIzzou site and they fired back. In this anonymous world we all need to have thicker skin because how can they personalize something unless they know who you are? A few of you post your names, or I assume they are your real identity. But most of us sit behind anonymous names, like me! For the record, I am Todd Wolverton and I am Jon’s only friend!

Being new to this site( 1st year), It would not have hurt my feelings if I had to wait 24 hours to post anything. If it stops most of the trolling than I say do it. PLEASE ! thank you for asking for everyones opinions.

Well looks like I picked the wrong time to finally create and account and post last night, but for what its worth the 24 – hour wait period wouldn’t have deterred me from creating an account. I’ve been coming to this site for over a year just for the information alone, so 24 hours wouldn’t have been a big deal.
You're safe for now.....
but one screw up and Jon will boot your ass,,,,,Hahaha!!! Great to have legitimate fans join the fun!!!

Let 'em troll
and hammer ’em when appropriate.
Double T Nation
We have a 24-hour rule but that didn’t come about until late last year with the Leach fiasco and morons came crawling out of the woodwork, if I recall. We don’t get a ton of trolls…a few Aggie fans from time to time, but they slink away after a few posts. Nearly all of the contributors from other schools are pretty cool and recognize who’s “turf” they are on when they head over – and they are welcomed if they don’t push the wrong button.
I think the waiting period is a good idea in general on these sites, though. I doubt you’ll stifle any growth by doing that…just my two pennies.
I'd say a quick but judicious hammer is fine.
Some like to push the envelope a bit too far for my taste, but generally the commentariat here knows how to handle it. And I’m okay with letting them run on if no one with the authority to drop the hammer is around – just more rope with which they’re hanging themselves. Ignorance in electronic form is easily recognizable, humorous and, frankly, just sad in the end: a waiting period won’t really change much as far as that goes.

Well
that’s the deal……
to be honest, one of the reasons I’ve presented this to you guys is that frankly, the web site has grown a great deal, and it’s taking a lot more time for me to manage. The more time I have to manage the less I have to write, and frankly, I’d rather be writing.
So…. I think the fact that someone has stated that the trolls are a reason they’d rather not be here says to me that we need a higher level of control.
At the same time – the thought of the 24-hour ban bothers me a lot.
We have the ability to allow some members to become moderators. Comments can be flagged as spam, troll, or inappropriate.
What I’d suggest is this – we find two or three moderators, train them on the moderation system, and if a comment gets flagged x amount of times as troll, then that user gets banned.
Comments????

Hey Jon
If Growth to CN is your goal. You dont want the 24 hour rule.
Is it possible to set up one of those quick polls (keep it on the site at all times?). Just for the use of 3-5 of your moderators or long time CN users that are trustworthy. Whenever anyone has an issue with a person it has to be voted on…. Which honestly I think can be done within minutes. I also think there has to be more than 2 people saying get this ASs-Clown Troll out of here.
And Again…..what is a TROLL Anyway. Someone you all dont agree with?
I laugh my butt off reading some of these peeps. However some absolutely need the hammer.
My only concern about my suggestion of a poll vote to ban:
Are there any cool calm, collected, heads out there…After a Huskers LOSS????
I wanted to ban that guy talking statistics and algorithms….holy shit…..TROLL! This is a football place….I digress.
poll
poll wouldn’t work… too long term. that’s why we have a system for flagging comments.
oh – statistics and algorithms. you’ll probably hate tomorrow, then.

I say play "whack-a-mole" with 'em
if they get out of line, but no 24-hour rule. Some of the most fun reading on this site comes when our members, with their delightfully quirky senses of humor, absolutely cut the legs out from under the trolls.
Plus, that seems to be when even more cat pictures show up…and I LOVES my kitty pictures!
And here is my final nag about voting for Sydney Anderson:
If you’re in the central time zone, vote right before 11 p.m., then right after 11 p.m., and you’ll get today’s vote and tomorrows done. Voting absolutely ends tomorrow night. The Link:
Call me what you want,
Just VOTE! ; ) BTW, if that’s your cat, it could be my Kitty’s sibling!
Yeah about that....
Just the threat of waiting time made me make an account – I was going to Saturday night, but calmer thoughts prevailed. Been reading for a long time…
Just wish I had some funny cat picture, but yeah, I don’t.
No 24 hour rule though, it’s more fun to ban them after they spent all the time making an account…..
Jon
BTW whats up with lil red…. I thought that absurdity got killed quickly after birth.
Whack-A-Troll
Two arguments:
For rule – They are REALLY annoying when I’m still in a foul mood after a less than stellar performance. The 24 hr wait would probably stop some of the drunken banter by those who only intend to talk shit after a win. If someone wants to actually be a contributing member of the site, a 24 hr wait may be annoying but it’s not going to stop them from coming back.
Against Rule – While following the threads on this site for the past few months, I’m about 98.6% certain that my favorite part of this site has been the backlash from comments made by the random jackasses who have no idea what they’re starting. The onslaught that ensues tends to be hilarious.
I say, if the “Wack-A-Troll” is a pain in the ass, make them wait 24 hours. The ones who care will be back. If not, let the real fans take care of the majority of them and you can squash the ones that are really causing a problem
I think
I should be judge, jury and executioner of all trolls. I have a friend in the CIA that can track them down and shoot them with a dart gun full of anti-stupid serum. It’s a win win situation…They troll, they get the serum, we eliminate all the stupidity on the boards… and that’s the goal, isn’t it?
If it's not broke, break it, then charge a lot to fix it.
My wife
has a great recipe for anti-troll serum!

Jon
Do you have a way to track how often CN members visit the site, post comments, start threads and otherwise make contributions that help grow the site? Perhaps those top few members can be your assistant troll whackers.
It would also be helpful if members who, only after they have achieved a certain level of participation at CN, be allowed to flag troll postings.
OK that’s all
really
crap.
can regular users flag each other’s comments? or not?
