Nebraska Post Game Thread - What Did We Just See?
I'm not going to say a lot right now. Like Bo Pelini, I'm probably a little emotional about what I've just seen.
Here's the thing, though. Nebraska got a shitload of penalties called against them. Bo Pelini made himself a center of focus (at least by the TV cameras) by most of the night.
These are two issues that have nothing to do with each other. Keep that in mind.
OTOH, let it all hang out.

Can we beat CU????????
Matthew 11:28-30
It's all fun and games until someone gets knocked up, down, or out!!
I know you guys are in a foul mood now
but I think it’ll be a very good game. I’m sure you all haven’t seen the last 2 CU games since one was on a channel no one gets and another wasn’t on TV, but we have been a completely different team since Hawkins was axed. A couple of weeks ago I was dreading the game cause I knew you would kill us then we wouldn’t get a chance for revenge in like 20 years, but now I’m really looking forward to it. See you all friday!

Unfortunately, I think this guy is right
Since I live in Colorado, all you hear about is CU football, even though Air Force is the best D1 team in the state. CU is fired up. I’m hoping NU will prise up to the occasion considering they need the win to play for the Big 12 championship and it’s the last home game as a member in the Big 12.
take care

Ahhhh, my first rape.
Not what i expected it to be!!
Definitely upset.
It’s to be expected when you have over 100 yards in penalties. A couple of them were game changers. Taking our 3-in-outs away, etc.

Refs affected the game
Calls were not consistent on both sides, and bailed ATM on 2 scoring drives.

Refs
I hate to blame the refs. I really hate to. But this game stunk from very early on. Phantom calls, mysterious no calls. If this was the first time this season I would chalk it up to a bad night. This has been a pattern this season, and there isn’t really any retribution we can get.
our retribution
is beating the snot out of CU.
We then are in the Championship game. Win that one and walk out of this BS conference with the trophy.
Anyway I'm going to go play with my kids.

Not going to blame the officials.
Play better, and they’re a non-issue.
Regardless, the best case scenario for this team is still exactly the same as if they had won. Beat CU, win the North, win the conference, play in the Fiesta Bowl. The only difference is that we have two losses instead of one.

True, but....
NU not scoring any TDs is not a good thing!
Even with the penalties
we still had a chance to win in the end. You can’t use em as an excuse when you have the ball with three minutes left and a chance to win. Blackshirts played very well again.
on the other hand, on the first play of the final drive, Burkhead went out of bounds on the first pitch and catch, but the clock kept running. That cost us 25 seconds.

Nuts and bolts...
I don’t like to whine about officiating, and I only saw the second half of the game, but the miss of a clear hold in the endzone when TAMU was backed up was ridiculous (its their left tackle holding our right DE…someone with TiVO tell me if I’m wrong…)
And the roughing the passer that kept the game-winning drive was just a P.O.S.

One could argue
It’s just bad coaching. But what I want to know is what the jump in penalties from this year to last year is
Nope...
A top down Big 12 wide conspiracy… No…
A group of officials getting tired of Bo constantly riding them when for the most part is regularly shown to be wrong…. I could easily see that
You see it with Tressel and Brown and Joe Pa on side of the spectrum and in the end with Callaham and Blake on the other side of the spectrum…
Coaches “make” their own luck. Officials try to be as impartial as anyone else until you give them reason not to. Bo, today, has crossed that line.

I haven't been a subscriber to the theory that the refs are out to get us...
But this game changed my mind. The Courtney Osborn “roughing” call tears it for me.
However, offensive execution was terrible, again. This is a recurring theme with this Husker team. If we don’t get defensive or special teams big plays, we have a hard time scoring.
I'll be interested
To see how determined the non-Nebraska media will be to ignore the officiating in this game. It would be sweet to see the Big 12 get their names dragged through the mud nationally.

From a Missouri fan, so, grain of salt, etc:
I think there is definitely something to be said for the refs. They, um, weren’t awesome. But it’s hard to play “What If”, so let’s address what DID happen:
Martinez’s injury, I think, was the biggest factor. When he’s dual threat, he’s unstoppable. When he’s single threat, he’s quite manageable.
The defense made about 90-percent of the plays it needed to. But that other 10 percent was killer (long reception to Fuller, etc.).
I understand why Pelini’s upset. I really do. But dude: you’ve GOT to keep your composure, if only for your team’s sake. Your team is very much in the game; cool out.
I’m not here to scoreboard (I fully expect NEB to beat Colorado next week); just sharing my thoughts. Good luck to you guys next week.

Not going to happen
I don’t think their fans have that kind of class. Hey, how about the interference penalty deep in A&M territory that became a “no penalty on the play” call. Gotta love that. “I saw a penalty, but you are right, that would be in favor of Nebraska so I better pick it up.” Why did that not happen on the game-determining roughing the passer call?
It was not a PI, but I see Pelini’s point on that one. How do you throw a flag and just forget about it?

Know you all don't care about this right now,
But keep voting for Nebraska setter Sydney Anderson. Since we started the Corn Nation voting with a vengeance on Sunday, her vote totals have risen, the second highest vote getters numbers have stagnated, and #3’s have only risen slightly. Here, again, is the link: www.seniorclassawar.com/vote
Vote tonight THROUGH next Tuesday, the 23rd. And ask your friends to do the same.
Random thought
Bo has GOT to use this move to the Big 10 to turn over a new leaf with officials. I respect his right to chew on them, and I think his unsportsmanlike was actually helpful, but I think part of our problems has to do with the officials disliking him personally. It’s hurting his team and almost certainly cost us a game tonight (assuming this wasn’t a Dan Beebe instigated performance by the Big 12 zebras).
"My hardest job is to convince the people of Nebraska that 10-1 is not a losing season." - Tom Osborne
I halfway disagree
I don’t mind ref assault when the imbalance is the way it was tonight. It was way to obvious to ignore tonight.
I don't specifically mean TONIGHT
I think the refs deserved a good ass chewing for most of the night. But Pelini’s been ripping these guys in every game for almost three years now…..refs are human. There are right times to explode. Imo, he does it too much.

seriously
get off it. officials understand – they know they’re gonna catch heat, and w/coaches like pelini – there’s always one that plays peacemaker.
but tonight? those little fucktards shriveled up their necks and stared off into space at every word. i don’t condone pelini’s behavior – but i completely understand it.
work your ass off for something, only to have someone take it away. you want a complacent coach? go call bill callahan.
I also saw
They gave him nothing when asking with increasing politeness for explanations on those stupid penalties. I can’t blame him at all.
I think
the Big XII refs are tired of his angry, in their face antics. He has the right to call them out on blatant incorrect calls, but he seems to scream at half the legitimate calls, also.
And,to me, His rants against the unfair calls seem to send a message to his team that it’s okay to whine about things that don’t go you’re way. His message should be “life isn’t fair…suck it up and over-come those roadblocks.”
I think
that when your livelihood depends on the decisions made by said officials (who cannot be publicly reprimanded per big12 rules), you earn your right to bitch. you don’t give a fuck if a few pissy fans don’t respect it, because your players do.
i’m fucking done.

thanks for the compliments
didn’t know about the ball-grabbing until I saw the replay here. Not sure what happened there. Wonder if he and Cotton had been going at it all game, and Cotton did something that made him retaliate in the pile. When the play happened in real time, all I saw was his leg kicking out, and wondered by he was trying to kick someone who wasn’t there.
Rec'd.
I’m really sad this particular matchup is going away, as I love Kyle Field and everything TAMU does in terms of fan support. Nebraska could be something like this if Dr. Tom told the boosters to shove it and quit complaining about students standing in support of their team. TAMU knows how to do fan support in the stadium, that’s for sure. Kudos to you, Aggies.

Yes, A&M played a tight game.
I don’t want to imply that the Aggies cheated. They played a fantastic game and were totally clean, just horrible officating.

FUCK THIS
ANYONE WHO KNOWS COLLEGE FOOTBALL COULD SEE THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN DECIDED IN OVERTIME. WHATEVER WE ARE GOING TO FUCKING KILL COLORADO AND TAKE THE BIG 12
wow
figured you guys would blame the refs for that roughing the passer call, but didn’t think you’d blame the whole loss on them
A conspiracy instigated by the Big 12? Are you serious? Dan Beebe isn’t intelligent to organize a conspiracy; he needed someone to hold his hand and tell him what to say when making promises he can’t keep about a proposted television deal and 10-team conference. Be realistic here.
As for the game, your players committed a lot of penalties. We averaged a lot of penalties coming into this game, but they were of the fixable kind, like false start (which was had one of tonight). Penalties didn’t get us into field goal range on the game-winning drive. Our running game did.
As for the refs, I saw a lot of holding go on by Nebraska that wasn’t called, and I’m sure there was holding by us that wasn’t called, so that’s a wash. The two penalties on Pelini were deserved, b/c he simply has no self control. Say what you want about the refs, I think Pelini is a poor leader for your team. They needed him to keep his composure and be a leader on the road tonight, and he failed them.
Good game.
Just don't grab my nuts and we'll be okay. Thanks.

not sure what happened there
viewed the video three times now
he’s either punching him in the balls, or pinching his hamstring
wonder if there is mitigating circumstances in this, if something else happened in the game that we don’t know about
Tony isn’t known as a dirty player, so this is totally out of character for him.
Good point.
Not sure if anything caused this to happen before, but it’s very clear that his hand was between his legs between his anus and scrotum.

It really really really pissed me off
a lot… because I’ve been in those piles before in HS (not going to say I played college), and I know that you don’t react that way unless something’s going on.
And then they showed Cotton bent over on the sideline and it was pretty obvious something happened.

that penalty is a non-factor if your defense stops our running game
which is my point
was it a borderline call? yes.
there was also a personal foul called on us that we never saw that put us on the 5 yd line after a punt, I think it was. The Big 12 refs suck in general; you have to play well enough so that winning and losing does not depend on them, and they are a non-factor. Both defenses played well enough to win this game tonight. We just made a few more plays on offense so we were able to win it.
Beergut,
My apologies to you if I offended you with my comment about your kicker. Accept?
And congrats on you win.
not offended
Bullock does have a big gut, especially for a kicker.
He isn’t quite at Sebastion Janikowski level yet, though.
No, they weren't "fixable" types of penalities
TAMU had 105 YARDS in penalties last week. That is not false starts. And your defense is a fricken sieve! And all of a sudden A&M stopped any offense to 6 points? Come on, beerguy, dont be so obtuse.
There should have been a pass interference penalty on the 3rd down that stalled Neb (that is always called, regardless of what Herbstreet says). One of the penalties on Martin was total bs. And no, the holds were not a wash. If TAMU had a couple of holding calls, then yes, a wash. But A&M had none.
Dude, come on, maybe the refs were sick of Pelini shit, fine, but don’t tell me they didn’t help A&M tremendously. You were absolutely stuffed after that 3rd down, and then the worst call imaginable gave your team the game.
BTW, one of the worst games on TV. Incredibly boring.
hmmmmm
And your defense is a fricken sieve! And all of a sudden A&M stopped any offense to 6 points?
We have the #1 run defense in the Big 12, and we are 3rd in total defense in the conference, behind Nebraska and texas. To call our defense a “sieve” is to admit you know nothing about college football, Big 12 football in particular.
We held OU to 0 points in the first half two weeks ago, and held Baylor scoreless last week. We had yet to play a two complete halves on defense, something we did tonight against NU, so holding your offense to 6 points wasn’t a surprise.
And if you think that game was incredibly boring, I guess you don’t like defensive football.
I hardly know what a sieve is without looking up a definition.
Not sure how it’d apply to this though.
by Aaron Gonzales on Nov 21, 2010 12:37 AM CST up reply actions
sieve

meatybob is trying to say our defense can’t stop anything. Obviously, he doesn’t watch much football.
We…held Baylor scoreless last week.
Baylor’s 30 points last week would suggest that you did not, in fact, hold them scoreless…

Diplomacy
come on Jon-you dont think this officiating crew will get some type of sanction after what we all witnessed???
what I'm thinking of
is the ’92 Washington game where the crowd noise was so bad, the energy so crazy that the refs lost control of the game and made calls that were just plain horrible.
And they made some horrible calls in this game.
Did they cost us the whole game? I don’t think so….. A&M played well, and I don’t think we should take that away from them.
And to be honest, Bo Pelini was an ass – and he needs to do better at that.
But – it’s the additive stuff that’s going on – the lack of calls against our opponents, the near constant calls against Eric Martin – I don’t get it – because I don’t want to say they’re just against us.
Shit.

And as lousy and disappointing as this loss is (and yes, I about threw a kitchen chair through my window)
we lost to a&m, if there is any program more deserving to finally win some god damn games and get some recognition, it’s them. They aren’t gang bangin’ thugs like Miami, they aren’t taking advantage of the lesser schools like Boise St., and they sure as hell aren’t arrogant assholes like the longhorns.
I will take this loss, 2nd loss at the end of Bo’s 3rd season at Nebraska. Ask me 3 years ago whether we would be where we are, I would say “not likely.”

first time posting
Typically I only read/post my thoughts on Burnt Orange Nation.
I was excited about watching this game after getting home from the Texas-FAU game this afternoon. I’ll give a couple thoughts on the game, you can ignore them or do as you please. Probably the most significant issue I had with the game wasn’t the penalties but Bo’s reaction to the penalties. You can disagree/yell but there becomes a point where it can have a negative effect on the players who watch the leader of the program implode over each call made against him. There’s a mental toughness that comes with that. I haven’t read all the reactions but I do believe Texas A&M deserves some credit, Gray had a great game for them and their defense played well.
While I do believe Bo made himself look like an idiot with his over reactions to calls, I know he’s a really great coach and ya’ll have some great fans (I attented the Texas-NU game this year) so his reactions tonight don’t represent the fan base.
I might suggest attending a Texas game at DKR before calling out the entire program as being “arrogant assholes” I think that’s a bit off-based. ie – see all the positive posts on BON from UCLA fans who attended that beating they put on us this year and only had good things to say about us as fans.
Thats Not It
I’ve have nothing against A+M-but if the zebras make a difference in the outcome of a game, something has to be changed.
Yeah, they seemed suspect.
But nebraska was the top ten team, they should have demanded a win, they didn’t.

From an Aggie fan on their blog.
Lucky!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Look, I consider myself a great aggie fan but can we really pretend to hide behind the influence of the Big 12? Anyone watching that game has to have the same feeling. Don’t get me wrong, the aggies played very well, as did the huskers and I’m damn glad we came out ahead but I don’t walk away feeling like we won the game. I instead feel embarrassed that we were handed this win on a silver platter. I can only hope that we if we magically make it to the championship game we don’t face these guys again because there is little doubt who the better team was.

This
actually highlights a big issue that’s really bothering me.
And that’s the idea that we can continue to separate the “Big 12” from the other team’s fans.
Shit, by morning, I’m probably going to give up on the conspiracy thing, and go with it, but I don’t want it to reflect our attitude towards other fans. They need to be separate.
If you had respect for other fans…. then keep it, and direct your anger at the Big 12 conference, the hierarchy, not the other teams.
Bottom line – it’s a nice comment from another fan. Keep the faith. Don’t make nasty comments on other sites, maybe, but I think most of you are better than that anyway.

So out of all of these the Roughing penalty is what is getting everyone up in arms? What about the 4 pre-snap penalties? or the three PF and the unsportsmanlike?
This was a undisciplined game. I know you can call holding on every play if you wanted but the pre-snap penalties are a serious problem.
Even is you are frustrated getting PF are no going to get rid of your frustration. I know Aggie "nutgate’ will be thrown out as a missed call but how often is the instigator ever actually the one that gets the flag.
JD’s like, "you want some fucking pitching? Here’s all the pitching you can stand. Now choke on it, bitches!"- RCCook
Hmmm I don't know
maybe because that roughing penalty came on the most critical drive, the defense held, stopped them on 3rd down, and IT WAS FUCKING BULLSHIT.
Leave the gun. Take the cannoli.
I hate to point fingers but...
I would definitely point my middle one straight up in the air to the Big 12 refs, Dan Beebe and anyone else that may have a hand in what seems to be a hate campaign against the Huskers this season. We have seen consistent one sided officiating against Nebraska this season and I’m to the point where I began laughing when they called that last roughing the passer penalty on Osborne. I was screaming at the TV and could hardly contain myself through all the bullshit. I don’t like to blame refs for losing games but it seems to me when we play Texas teams, we seem to always get the short end of the officiating stick.
What makes me even more pissed is that not a single person in the Nebraska athletic association will say one word publicly about the obvious one sided penalties called on Nebraska. Pelini will show it on the field but when he gets back into the press conference he’ll show no hints of frustration of the officials. I’m sure he will rant about not executing and not being prepared and he will take most of the blame. He won’t talk much about him yelling at Martinez and the Cotton situation and sure as Hell won’t say a word about the terrible officiating his team had to deal with for four total quarters tonight. I don’t know if it’s Coach Tom telling Pelini to keep his mouth shut or Pelini is really good at claiming his Chi but it’s nearly 2 hours after the game and I’m still PISSED!!!
All I ask Pelini is be a man and call out the officials and the league for the bunch of low class scrubs they are. DO IT FOR THE FANS! DO IT FOR YOUR PLAYERS! I DON’T CARE WHO YOU DO IT FOR BUT MAKE SURE YOU DO IT!
Who cares about the consequences at this point? You think it will put a target on the Huskers back? Guess what…it’s been there all season. We’re already going through Hell this year so let’s begin earning that treatment!
Congrats to the Aggies fans for the win. I would say they earned this win by about 80%. The other 20% is compliments of the officiating. They played a Hell of a game and defensively they were amazing. Hats off to them and good luck in the future.
