From a Texas fan, good game Nebraska, and so long
Hoping y’all don’t blame the refs again, because we’ve had many good, close games in this rivalry and it would be a shame to see nothing but respect from each other as you move to the Big 10 to try and regain your national prominence.
Hook ’em
Ditto.
My personal rule on complaining about the refs is that you forfeit your right when you can’t even make the game close – and this wasn’t close. That and the whole “If you can’t say anything good, don’t say anything at all” rule leads to me to give a big fat “No comment” regarding the refs.
Good luck the rest of the way – would love to get another crack at you in the conference championship game.

If you stare long enough at the pattern above..
You can see a moron.
Anyway.
I’m so diappointed. Texas wanted it more, and they took the game away from us.
What I don’t get,is how we get soooo ramped up for this game, and then come out like it’s amateur hour. Just like ISU last season.
The players got outplayed, and the coaches got outcoached. I would bet money that Bo took the approach that this ws just another game, which it wasn’t, and effectively took the players edge away. And then just when we claw back to within 7, he decides to onsides kick??
I just don’t get it. This should have been a blowout, and we just got embarrassed. A Heisman candidate gets pulled int the 3rd quarter? What a joke.
BTW, I think I have a new nickname for #34. Niles “Drop the ball” Paul.

A "Heisman contender"
Martinez was not. Any talk of that was always premature. That said, I’m really surprised by the move to pull him. We wasn’t playing THAT bad (even though Lee was undeniably more effective).

No he wasn't..yet.
But he was on his way, and rightfully so until today. I guess he wasn’t as good as we thought, and Lee wasn’t as bad. I kinda liked seeing Lee in there. His passing was on target.

Our offensive line obviously has a way to go
It has shown that it can plow through most teams, but not the elite ones yet. I’d bet that’s the real issue with Martinez not being able to run. And he was adequate passing, or at least would’ve been had Paul, Paul, Burkhead, and Paul a couple more times been able to hold on to the ball.
"My hardest job is to convince the people of Nebraska that 10-1 is not a losing season." - Tom Osborne
They sure do.
They looked undersized today against Texas. Yeah, T-Mart wasn’t great, but he did have a few good TD passes dropped. I thought our defensive guys looked small as well.

Martinez will be in the Heisman conversation the next few years. He is extremely talented.
I was surprised Pelini did not put him back in. Our defense was tired the last quarter and he might have broken away.
The Cornhuskers gave Texas a very good game. Nebraska deserves the ranking and the high praise. You are a good team.
by dimecoverage on Oct 16, 2010 7:00 PM CDT up reply actions
I think under Lee we were more effective
because Texas assumed Lee had to be coming in to pass and became more worried about that, and it opened up some running lanes for us that Rex and Roy exploited.

Why would you get banned?
I think you are a valuable asset to society. Folks like you make the rest of us feel good about ourselves!!
Well, what is there to say really?
I don’t think there’s much arguing that if our receivers catch their (fairly easy to catch) passes, we’re going to win this game, minus that bizarre punt return.
Texas undoubtedly used their bye week well, and they were definitely the better team out there today. Beyond that, I’m not sure there’s much else to be said….gotta get ready for Stillwater this week.
And no, the refs weren’t helpful, but there’s no way they cost us this one.
"My hardest job is to convince the people of Nebraska that 10-1 is not a losing season." - Tom Osborne
If you use that logic
Texas had 2 dropped TD passes themselves, although they were a little tougher catches to make and ended up settling for field goals. Also Texas kneeled on the Husker 4 yard line to end the game and you would have to think that would have been another score if we needed it. Yes the drops by Nebraska were crippling, but credit the Texas D for completely taking away everything the Huskers like to do. I was very impressed with our defense today. Good luck in the future and hopefully you guys can handle our Crimson and Cream problem for us in the Big 12 Championship Game
by LouisianaTexan on Oct 17, 2010 4:17 AM CDT up reply actions
Believe me, you don't want to go down the "If...then" road
Texas was only at the 4 yard line at the end of the game because Nebraska tried an onside kick – something they wouldn’t have had to do if any of those TD passes were caught. Also, Texas only had one true dropped TD pass – the one out the back of the endzone would have been a miracle.
Texas’ defense flat-out outplayed Nebraska’s offense, but don’t go around saying Texas was as close to a blowout as Nebraska was to a win, because it’s just not true.

Huskers did not play to win and T-MART had longhorns in the backfield all day. Watson took too long to change the playcalling and when he did change it. THE DAMN boys dropped the ball.
I think the expectations at Memorial Stadium are too much for the Huskers. Please tell me the last time they played a good game at home??
I hate Texas
That said, until baseball season, I don’t have to say it again.
Not a good performance today. Did not respond to the pressure and expectations on the offensive side of the ball. Defense played well. Too many penalties and I have hardly never said this, officiating did not help. You have to play well enough not to leave it up to the guys in the stripes and Nebraska did not do that. i guess that if you want to see them play well, go on the road! TM will grow up and be a factor. He will get better so that in big games he will be a difference maker. The team has played well this season, and will in the upcoming weeks. They are not ready to be a national contender, but unless you expect to be, you never will. The expectations are there. Rome was not built in a year!

The classiest fans in college football?
Dude, really? Did you see this game? They were booing our injuries! Like it was soccer and we were wasting time or something. WTF? Class? 10-15 years ago, sure. Today? No. Not at all.
I'm not going to defend anyone booing an injury
But they booed an injury, not injuries, and they stopped as soon as they realized the injury was real.
I think it’s ridiculous that fans at Burnt Orange Nation have decided that Husker fans have absolutely no class based on this game alone.
This was Nebraska’s most hated rival and most anticipated game in three decades, and they had to watch their team throw up an absolute stinkbomb. On top of that, the team they lost to did more on-field celebrating after nearly every play than they’ve ever seen a team do (enough to earn them a penalty at one point), and they had to endure a barrage of questionable (at best) calls from a refereeing crew whose integrity they already questioned.
That seems the worst possible circumstances to make a once-and-for-all judgment about a fanbase’s “class.” I’d say that after a game like that, the fact that no Texas fans were injured after the game proves the Huskers’ fans have a pretty good deal of class.

Here's hoping
for a Texas/Nebraska out of conference series in the future. Definitely some of the most entertaining Big 12 games over the years.
I’m glad this one ended the way it did. Give the Big 10 some hell!
Bump's Take....
With 3 minutes left, my “Flying Pelini’s” mantra made me feel like a prophecy. With 1 minute left? Not so much.
I totally agree with the move to Lee. I think it was a great move. I actually called it before the half. He was effective and handled the pressure so much better.
F’n receivers. What do we have to do to get the receivers to believe in themselves? Come on…that is all mental. Paul and Kinnie are way better than that. Very disappointing.
When Helu fumbled and gave UT short field in the first qtr I said to myself “that will be the difference in the game” after seeing the couple of series.
Dammit….I are pyssed. And drunk. Mother f’n Texas. I hate those asshats. But they do own Lincoln. Gotta give respect where respect is due.

My Cyclones are getting handled too. Just not my day.
Poor ball handling has been a problem all year.
But 7 drops. 3 of which were surefire TDs. That is called “being in a opponent’s head”.
So disappointing. Maybe Neb can start scheduling better OOC opponents so they face a rush D that isn’t one of the 20 worst in the country before conference play.
One of the benefits
of Nebraska and Colorado jumping ship is that Texas’ upcoming out of conference schedule has some great new additions.

Really, anything at all?
People like you get under my skin. You are not a sports fan, you are an antagonist. You aren’t rooting for a team, you are rooting against another team. It is pathetic.
Three Words: Line...Of...Scrimmage
O-Line got shredded. That was embarrassing to watch. The zone-read is kinda like the old Wishbone; you have to establish the middle otherwise the wide stuff won’t work.
"No 00:01 Chances!!"
I know I am drunk but I am not letting this game get me down...
Everything this team wants to accomplish is still in front fo them. Sure I would have swallowed a loss to OSU and A&M to have beat UT but if we win out like I think we will then we will still get our shot. I’m still a believer in this team.
Yes.
This was just one loss. The next two games are very important. It’s time to start thinking about those.

Don’t forget about the loss today. don’t move on just yet…. wait maybe YOU WILL GET YOUR ASS KICKED NEXT WEEK!!!. It’s awhile before you play the nebraska school for the wal mart challenged any time soon
You who know better than I:
How do you think it will affect the 10 recruits that were there?
A little...
But I realy don’t think it will be that big of effect. We will not play UT in their college careers so that has to be to our benefit.
The good one's
are coming south to Austin now.
QB recruits might be more solid.
Who knows. Martinez isn’t perfect so our QB recruits have to know that they will be given a chance to compete for the job. OL needs to be shored up. They got eaten up on the zone reads today.

We've been talking

we have two TV’s. they’re not Huge. We’re cheap people. Simple? yeah.
but this year, i thought, I know Mrs CN (and the kids) are tired me hogging the TV to watch college football.
So.. i got two receivers, two DVR’s, no HD (let’s not go there) , and what I get it is – Mrs CN watching the TV upstairs ahead of me, screamingn….

and yes?
dont’ pick on me tonight. Im three hours away from our anniversary.
You're a brave woman
I planned my wedding in April, so I didn’t have to worry about the football schedule
Your memory is failing you.
You wanted me out three weeks ago when you found out I was a dreaded female invading this den of testosterone.
Mine is planned for next March (not as much as basketball fan obviously)
Even my fiancée thinks women who wanted to get married in the fall in Nebraska are silly/stupid.
I had a friend
get married the day we played Notre Dame, she was pissed I only showed up for the reception, however her new husband understood.
I got married the day Penn St beat NU 40-7...
and oddly I still remain a Jamal Lord fan.
Smart lady.
Can’t tell you how many people I pissed off by picking a football saturday. What can I say…I was so in love, I didn’t even notice he hated football.
Don't know who that is buddy
Anywho, the aspect of Neb that i came away most impressed with was their ability to recover their own fumbles. It literally kept you in the game. If we had recovered even half of them the game could’ve gotten ugly
Eh...the counter would be that we should be able to handle the ball as well as you did.
We had twice as many fumbles against Idaho as we did against UT. So don’t pound your chest to much over your ability to turn us into butterfingers! We’ve been that all season!! :)
Oh I wasn't boasting
And I’m aware of your season-long recovery abilities. They were discussed at BON. And you lived up to the hype. I was impressed. Y’all recovered fumbles that you had no business recovering.
You know why Nebraska recovered most of their own fumbles?
Because 3 of the 5 of them weren’t forced by the defense. When that happens, they usually drop right near where you are, and there are no defensive players right there. It’s a lot easier to recover a fumble under those circumstances than when it’s stripped from you in the midst of a huge pile or while you’re on the run.
I know you’re trying to passively-aggressively argue that Nebraska was lucky to even hang with Texas, but the fumble recoveries aren’t luck, they’re logic.

I don't live in Omaha.
And your kids are great. We are hoping with all of our might that the 14 year old will finally get to 3rd grade this year.
Wait
How’d you know about 1620 then?
3rd grade?…holy shit man. I never thought that anyone in my family would pass me and possibly become asst manager of a jiffy lube

Am I the only one?
I wanted T-Magic in the game in the 4th WITH Lee to run the wildcat?
Texas would not have expected that!
So I tried the Barbasol and Rotel dip and I was very dissapointed!

Then why would you be here?
Only two team’s fanbase had interest in this game.
see
that is the problem with you NU fans it not about you. It’s about college football man. again no TU fan here just a fan of whomever is playing nebraska
you can't do better than that?
See anti-husker!
Come on, i think you’re better than that. I type so danm fats.
Are the rest of you
starting to feel at least a little bit better? I’m finding great comfort commiserating with you all while my husband snores in the recliner….OK, that’s a lie. I’m starting to feel better because I waited til 7:00 tonight to crack my first beer, and I’m finally getting a buzz going. And don’t ask why I didn’t have one during the game. It’s a complicated deal I tried to make with God regarding Texas. Should have known better, and made the deal with the devil, considering the scum-bags we were playing.
I'm good. I examed the box score and having watching the game I'm good.
I know this game had a lot of importance to the fans but I believe…perhaps in a drunken justification….that the coaches knew that this game in the overall scheme was more expendible than some others. They really didn’t seem to be that aggressive or innovative. That’s what makes me think that.
Please expound on the
“this game was more expendible” thought.
Its not a divisional opponent...
Plus they have MU at home to win the tie breaker. And if you’re going to lose to a south team….Texas is better to lose to than aTm and OSU.
time
heals wounds…..
me, i’m thinking of what is next’s week content. how do i seriously look at this? how do I deal with it?

Yeah, I'm kind of a troll here, but I'm on BON often enough...
…so maybe I’m a cousin?
Tough one for my Husker friends, who always were so much fun to tailgate with in Austin. Sadly, I never made it to Lincoln…I would still like that opportunity someday. Such a class act. My only warning, and I’m sorry if it’s too soon after today’s game, is to beware of being overly Pellini’d. With all their hysterics and complaining, they’re on the brink of turning the greatest fans in college football into a bunch of victims. You were an incredible fan-base long before they ever showed up. Don’t let them tarnish that. All the best the rest of the way.
41-38 !!
Thanks...
But we will never think of ourselves as victims. UT had our # from the beginning. The real stinger is their record in Lincoln since the Big 12 was formed. But hey…that’s why we love college football. UT has KSU, we have UT. I love playing UT and OU because they are always great and usually result in a entertaining games.
Grrrrr....KSU. Thanks tons for that...
I really only meant how the Pellini’s seem to play the victim-card with regard to the refs, etc. I certainly didn’t mean it in regard to NU’s play or the record vs. UT. Hell, what’s the total point differential of all the UT-NU games in the Big 12?! No gloating here, these have been some amazing games.
Sorry if I wasn’t clear.
41-38 !!
No worries...I didn't really mean the KSU thing as a jab.
Just seems that every team has that “one team”…MU with OU comes to mind as well. Some teams just prevent matchup problems. UT just seems to make the right call, get the perfectly timed turnover, or whatever to get a victory. Just the way it works in college football.
Thanks for the encouragement
We beat ourselves today nearly as much as Texas beat us. Not that Texas didn’t play well, they obviously did. It was just heart-breaking to watch so many dropped balls and missed assignments. Texas had our number, and so did we.
No Aggression
I don’t know what it was but, from the initial kickoff I ha a bad feeling. It seemed as if there was no aggression. Like SDSU had showed up again. The 3 n’ outs, Gilbert’s sudden ability to run, and Rex’s dropped Touchdown confirmed my suspicion. I really don’t get it. It’s like the ghosts of the 2009 schedule came back. We had a little Iowa State, with a lot of Texas Tech, and some B12 Championship Game. It’s very sad and disappointing. Like a good dog that chases after a cat but gets hit by a car.
I really can’t believe the two HUGE drops by Paul, the HUGE drop by Rex (most surprising), and the HUGE drop by Kinnie. Come on men! We count on you guys!

I'm sure you've all been talking about it,
but am I the only one who wonders where the hell the pep was today? We freaking MANHANDLED KSU last week, and our guys looked like they didn’t want to be there from the first snap today. Anyone listen to the postgame? What did Bo say?
"...when the devil says to you: do not drink, answer him: I will drink, and right freely, just because you tell me not to."

I really wish I'd caught it. I usually do but was out.
I agree though. The innovation and aggressiveness just wasn’t there. that’s what disappointed me the most. Just seems like they were able to accept this loss. I mentioned that above. But is really the only way i can rationalize the loss right now. Very disappointed. Sad, sad, sad.
Agreed.
You wonder if they were just exhausted emotionally and mentally. That was a stupid, unprepared, tentative team out there today. Nice to see Zac Lee do well, though. I want to hear how Wats explains Martinez as a passer, because he just isn’t there, and hasn’t been all season. Still, you can’t put this one one guy: everyone from Pelini down to the scout team laid a big turd out there on the turf today.
"...when the devil says to you: do not drink, answer him: I will drink, and right freely, just because you tell me not to."

Just caught a few snippets.
Bo said Taylor was still the starter, and seemed pissed when they pushed him about it. One of the receivers, when asked about the dropped balls, said something snarky like…whenthey were catchable, yeah, we should have caught them.
Crap, this should have been posted under the Rev's
question about the press conference!

*** Farewell & Good Luck ***
Good luck NU in the Big 10.
My earliest experience was NU beating down my beloved Horns in the Cotton Bowl. I didn’t enjoy that much & in later years felt it a big accomplishment anytime we beat you folks.
Losing NU from the Big 12 is not a good thing.
Thanks for the kind words
From a pure football perspective, I’m very sad to be leaving the Big 12, especially now that we seem to be getting to the point where we could take you guys once in a while.
I’m really hoping OU stumbles in the South and we can play you guys one more time (assuming we can beat Mizzou). It’s not so much a “we’ll get you next time” thing as it is we’ve gotta cleanse ourselves of this feeling. I actually felt pretty decent after the Big 12 Title game last year. Heartbreaking loss, for sure, but at least we knew we played the best we could and ALMOST got over the UT hill. Today wasn’t anything like that. Today was just…..bad. The effort NU gave today was not worthy of the UT-NU series. I’d just love a chance—win or lose—to redeem ourselves, as we were lucky to not get seriously blown out today.
PS: A big time classy move by Brown in not rubbing it in at the end when he certainly could have. He’s always had my respect, and he’s clearly a good guy…just coaching at the wrong school. ;)
"My hardest job is to convince the people of Nebraska that 10-1 is not a losing season." - Tom Osborne
Yeah, it's not Brown's style
Stoops on the other hand…
It was a competitive game. Pretty ugly on both sides, and uglier for Nebraska. I know how that feels; our team has been shooting themselves in the foot all season, so while I am happy that this time the other team did so more, I can sympathize with the frustration.
I actually think it was a mistake to put in Zac Lee; the field goal drive he “sparked” was helped by 30 yards of penalties. He made a few good plays, but nothing that Martinez couldn’t have done.
by TheElusiveShadow on Oct 17, 2010 12:09 AM CDT up reply actions
Yeah, I'm torn on that
On the one hand, Lee made some nice throws and is a solid player. He got way, way too much blame last year for the offensive problems. He’s not a gamebreaker, but he’s a good manager who was playing injured without any help on offense last year.
On the other hand, Martinez wasn’t playing THAT bad. His running game was never going to get on track unless we were able to make Texas pay because of their commitment to stopping him. We had open receivers and Martinez was decent (not great mind you, but decent) at getting the ball to them. And then….well you know.
Both sides did make some mistakes today. Texas’s coverage on that last punt would have been a horrific gaffe had Nebraska’s receivers been able to haul in one of those automatic touchdown passes they let fall to the turf earlier in the game.
Overall, a really good win for the burnt orange crowd again. UT is still alive in the Big 12 South. On our end, we need to get over the fact that we’re not going to play for the national title. An 11-1 regular season is perfectly realistic if we can fix those little, easy things that we couldn’t do to save our own lives this afternoon.
"My hardest job is to convince the people of Nebraska that 10-1 is not a losing season." - Tom Osborne
Quarterback confidence
The second I saw them pull Martinez for Lee I said “game over”. Not because Lee is a bad player — he is pretty good! But that was when Pelini said I give up on our system.
Now, I understand that a smart a devious coach would set up the qb race so that we could have a run first qb and a pass first qb. In fact, I think that was why he did the whole “I dunno who our starting QB will be”
But, if you are expecting your senior QB, who is third string now, to come out and play with confidence, you have to give him snaps. What would you do if you were told “You don’t suck, but these guys suck less. Oh and when we really need you, you are super important!”
Sorry, I’m angry about this game. I thought I got over this 15 years ago.

As for me
I’m ashamed for this team. Yeah boo hoo we lost by seven, but we should have lost by 30.
No, we should have won, by a touchdown if not more.
No offense to Texas, who played a great game and didn’t let up, but we beat ourselves. Eight or nine dropped balls, at least 4 fumbles, 3 unforced, sloppy play causing TEN penalties. When 12 of your plays count for nothing and you negatively affect 10 more (Almost 1/6 of the total plays in the game.) Then you need to convert the opportunities you do get, and the Huskers couldn’t.
It doesn’t help that the crowd was taken out of the game for long sections at a time and that the officiating at times seemed to confirm Pelini’s paranoia(Hell when the announcers comment on it then theres probably something up)
No this was a game that Nebraska should have won, could have won, and need to look at themselves and especially the receiving core as for why they won’t be going to the National Championship this year.

Tough loss, Huskers
Ouch. This Wolverine fan was really pulling for you to beat the Horns this time. I even wore a little red… as much as I could stomach (why’d you have to share a color with that other state?)
Your game reminded me a lot of our last two. Martinez = Robinson, a flashy new QB who can run like the devil but has trouble passing. Zac Lee = Tate Forcier, the more accomplished passer who can’t run as well, who started last year and was put in the second half when things went south. Lots of long drives ending in dropped passes or turnovers. Lots of points left on the field.
Well, I hope you get one more chance to play ‘em in the championship game. And on the plus side, I’m really looking forward to our games starting next year. I know you’ll miss Texas, but man are we going to have some classics.
GBR!
For the record
I don’t think the troll last night (ntt27) was a Texas fan. Especially with all the anti-husker stuff. Sounded more like an aggie.
He did say he was "no TU fan," so am pretty sure you're right on that count.
