Around SBN: Clippers Need To Realize That Spurs Are The Anti-Grizzlies

Husker Hardwood: Southeastern Louisiana Preview/Gamethread

The Lions visit Lincoln tonight in the Huskers last non-conference game of the year. For me, this means two things...

1. We have exactly 40 minutes of game play in which to prepare for what looks to be a challenging Big 12 conference schedule. Nebraska has talent, don't get me wrong....in fact they could very well suprise everyone by earning a ticket to the dance this year. At the same time, we are looking at competing in what is probably the toughest conference in the nation in my opinion. A few key victories against the right teams could mean a power ranking that propels us into March Madness. We need to hone our skills tonight in preparation for what could be a meat grinder of a January.

2. Nebraska has a chance to post a 12 win non-con season for the first time since 1994-95 when the Big Red won 13 games before starting conference play. Old school fans may remember some of the names from that campaign: Erick Strickland, Jaron Boone, and Mikki Moore among others, and a trip to the NIT Tournament.  Prior to that season, the only other 12+ non conference win season was in 1990-91, when Beau Reid and Rich King led the Huskers to a 15-1 start and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. These are some pretty good comparisons...not to get everyones hopes up.

More after the jump.

Star-divide

Tonight, I'd expect Doc to focus heavily on transition defense...which is our biggest asset, whether we execute it well or not. Good transition defense = turnovers and no fast break points. These have been our trouble spots in the few losses we've had. SELA 'eeked out a 6 point win in their last effort against William Carey (what is with these team names?), and are1-4 on the road. They average 77 ppg this year, which isn't anything to sneeze at. But I doubt they will be able to do much against the Big 12's top defensive unit. Watch for a furious defensive effort in the first half..

Center Patrick Sullivan is the Lions top threat, averaging about 15.5 per game with 9 boards. Shutting him down will be another key in this game. By doing so, Nebraska will effectively win the rebound battle, while keeping points off the board and forcing the inexperienced guards to pick up the slack. This plays right into our hands, as the turnover margin will determine a lot in this matchup.

At home, I just don't see the Huskers blinking in this one. Ryan Anderson is back in the lineup, which gives us our maximum scoring potential. Bear Jones seems to thrive when the attention is elsewhere
(Ryan Anderson)...so look for a big game out of him as well. I'm thinking 82-60 - Nebraska.

Starting Lineups:

i gotta ask

but…. does the good non-conference record compare favorably to the non-conference schedule those other Nebraska teams played?

I’m ignorant of what’s happening…. but it seems like our non-con schedule is pretty light. Is that true or not?

Totally light...

…but that’s been the Nebraska (basketball) way for years. We usually play about 2 – 3 “name” teams and then a bunch of crap…which leads to low RPI…which means we esentially need to finish in the top 4 or 5 in the Big 12 to even have a legit shot at the Dance.

I like the fact that we played in the Las Vegas Classic this year but we either need more enrollment in these tournaments or at least step up scheduling since all it gives you is easy wins but doesn’t prepare you for your conference all that well (especially since the Big 12 is nasty with a capital N this year!).

I agree...

as far as this season goes, I get caught up in the stats….but then I see the players in person, and I have doubts.

This year, Tulsa and USC have been the “names” that we’ve beaten. Tulsa is generally under-rated, so I like that win.

Huskers win! 77-59

Only 6 turnovers and 9 fouls for the whole game! Wow. Just what we needed. Good transition defense, and limited turnovers.

Next up, Texas A+M on Saturday. Good luck to the Huskers as they start conference play.

I know it!

Well….I’m gonna do more research for these Big 12 games….so we’ll see. They are without their 2nd leading scorer and best defender on the outside. That helps.
