What Bo did about Castille a month later shows his leadership even more
In wake of a interesting first quarter of the season that has many twists and turns as well as ups and downs. Something brought to home that made me respect the coaching staff even more, Kansas players fighting. That in itself is not to strange I'm sure every program has some team in fighting. They on the other hand was fighting with the basketball team over, among other things who got the most women on the campus. This may seem humorous to some of us but 3 things pop in my mind 1) How is this showing any respect to the women and the program of Kansas University 2) Where was the coaching staff to nip this problem 3) How could the staff let this get so out of control?
John Wooden is regarded as one of the best coaches of all time in any sport but to a man all of his past players told he was more than a coach. He was a leader and a teacher telling them how to live their lives with respect and dignity. He was always going on about not being that guy at the party, the jock that goes in there with the thought that he could have any woman he wanted. That being a big time sports star allowed him the right to act like an ass because hey, basketball player and stud. Every week he taught these life lessons to all of his players and they still stick home today to many of his former players.
For every good solid home that recruits and players come from there is just as many that come from broken ones. And with the Internet and scouting websites these kids get put on a pedestal very quickly and early in their life. With temptation and desire right there in there fingertips its hard to say no or to come into a program without at least a little bit of hubris. Which makes what the coaching staff job as role models and adults even more important. They have to deflate the ego while at the same time building him up as a player.
Bo was chastised by some people as being to harsh on Castille but in hindsight he was not only sending a message to him but the team as well. Own up and be accountable of your actions. While there is no hard and fast rule to this there has to be lines and could you imagine if this same problem would happen here? Both Bo and Doc would be playing with half a team if they had too just to prove a point and you know Dr. Tom would support them a 110%. Which makes what Bo did this summer even more important because he was telling his team don't be that guy. Because there is more in life than playing football, there is an education of the mind and soul.

i didn't
follow that close enough to realize they were fighting over who got the most women on campus. That’s the dumbest damned thing I’ve heard in a while.
even though Wooden coached during a time at which the US was going through societal upheaval, I’d guess he’d say that it’s more difficult to coach these young men than it ever has been. Too much entitlement, and nobody saying no.
