Nebraska pitching coach Eric Newman on the struggles of his young pitching staff:
"None of us can look into a crystal ball, but you take a marshmallow and put it under fire and it melts. You take a lump of coal and put it under a fire, it becomes a diamond. Hopefully we’re going to become diamonds."

Et tu, Newman?
Not quite sure where Coach Newman was going with those comments, but it doesn’t exactly relax me. The “marshmallow” remark, in particular, begs the question: did he just throw his own pitching staff under the bus? Considering how much these guys have been getting hammered in the court of public opinion, calling them out publicly is a risky proposition. The staff might finally “man up” or, since the season’s a lost cause anyway, they could shut it down completely. It could go either way.

Won't coal burn
when you put it in the fire?
You can't possibly be a scientist if you mind people thinking that you're a fool.

The fire
in this case, is Eric Newman.
I don’t think the pitchers who come into Nebraska are any under allusion as to what they’re getting into – my understanding is that the guy is very intense, and very disciplined.
He’s speaking directly to his players….. he’s telling them in no uncertain terms that they’re either going to be marshmallows or diamonds – their choice if they can withstand the heat of his gaze, his work outs, his temperament.
Coal wouldn’t dare burn itself out if Eric Newman is the fire. He doesn’t give that choice. Marshmallow or diamond, that’s it.
Maybe we could use that as a theme for the coming season… the next year.

Like I Said...
Newman calling out his pitchers and going the “tough love” route in the media is risky. If it works, he’s a “master motivator.” If it doesn’t work, then he comes across as an insufferable jerk (there’s another phrase I could use, but it’s better I keep my comments family-friendly).
BTW, this could all be a moot point. I was at Saturday’s game and ran into one of my old junior-high teachers (retired now) and he goes to a lot of NU baseball games. He told me there’s a rumor going around Haymarket Park that Newman could be headed to Rice as an assistant coach. We’ll see if anything comes of it.

Ummm, in order to make a diamond
you put the coal under an enormous amount of pressure. Heat would just burn it.
