Great Game...

Jon mentioned this in the game thread write up, but it bears repeating: Mr. Corn Nation himself called into EDSBS LIVE this week to talk about tonight's game. Looking back at it now, it was a downright uncanny conversation:

Jon:  I'm telling you, it's going to be as slugging a defensive slugfest as you can imagine and Nebraska is going to win it by some crazy score like 13-11. Tell me why I'm wrong.

PB:  Because this is my year, Jon. It just can't be spoiled this Saturday night. It just can't be. My. Year.

Literally up until the final second, it looked like Nebraska was going to beat Texas 12-10. Improbably, everything went Texas' way on the final drive -- from the kickoff out of bounds, to the horse collar tackle to get into field goal range, to the senseless lob pass that barely hit the ground before time expired, to the 46-yard field goal that slipped through the uprights. When it was all over, Jon was exactly right about how the game would unfold, and would have been exactly right about the outcome, too, if I hadn't also been right: It's our year.

Admittedly, I'm only here (and not dead in a gutter) because Texas won, but since someone had to win and we got the ball last this time, I had to at least come over and congratulate y'all for kicking our offense around the field for 4 quarters. Congratulations on winning the North, good luck in the bowl season, and I hope we bang heads every year in December.

Good luck against Bama...

and you are going to need it. Cody and company are not exactly a walk in the park.

Great game...

The calls at the end were incredibly helpful but I was relieved that they got them right and a bad call didn’t take away from what a great game it was (see all the SEC games this year). Best of luck in the Holiday. I guess they were right, Pelini’s definitely doing something right up there..

As Meaty said, Just beat 'Bama.

I’m still mostly numb from the game last night and a long (and nerve-wracking due to weather) drive today. But all I can say to Texas right now, is just beat ‘Bama. Don’t do that to us, don’t rip that victory away from us, just to go out and choke against the Tide. If you beat the SEC and shut those fans up…I can deal.

Sorry PB

But the only teams that should be slugging it out every December is Nebraska and OU. The true rivals. Order will be restored and it will happen. Pelini has the Huskers heading on the right path and Stoops team will be back. Least we not forgot this is only the 3rd time in the last 10 years OU hasn’t been in this game. And had the Huskers not had their issues this decade they should have been on the opposing sidelines more than the 1 time. Go Huskers, great game.

Exactly, wtf

are you saying? There is no “order”. If’s and but’s do not have trophy cases. It is all about the “W’s”. You guys are heading in the right direction and have a great system coming of age. Put an offense on the field and you will be downright formidable. But don’t go spewing OU venom because of one game. Play it on the field, not in your revisionist dvr mind of yours.

I don't consider it "OU Venom"

Ask most Nebraska fans, and we’ll want OU every year. Our history with Texas is recent (and bitter…especially recently). And as much as we’ll want revenge come October 16th, we have decades of history with Oklahoma. A lot of us want that back.

What that means is consistantly winning the North, and OU getting back to winning the South. We can’t play them the Friday After Thanksgiving anymore, so we’ll have to settle for a week later.

TXStampede

Let me explain for a moment if I could. In the 2006 Big 12 Championship game between OU/Nebraska there was a sign being held up by a Husker fan that read "Nebraska Vs. OU = Order Restored. The “order” I’m speaking of is that in most OU and Nebraska fans minds, is the championship of the conference should always come down to these 2 teams playing each other for all the marbles. That’s the way it was for decades. It appears Pelini has Nebraska on the road to being the North Champion again on a regular basis so if OU can pull it back together as they have 7 of the last 10 years that order will be restored. Although OU/Texas have been playing each other forever as well there was no conference stakes. I miss playing Nebraska every year and I’m sure that feeling is mutual. When the Big 12 was formed that was the only thing that broke my heart. I thought expanding to 12 teams was great but losing the yearly battle with Nebraska seemed a high price to pay. I’m not spewing OU venom just remembering the past . Don’t take offense but as you seem to be a UT fan and automatically assume I’m talking crap, whereas the Nebraska fans would get what I’m saying easily shows that they truly understand the mutual respect these teams/fans have towards each other. Whereas most OU and UT fans despise each other. And as for you comments of playing it on the field, I believe OU has been, we can go into the bad loses and bowl games but the fact of the matter is 7 of the last 10 years we have been in the Big 12 conference championship game and are 6-1 in that game. You have been 3 or the last 10 years and are 2-1. If I haven’t explained “Exactly, wtf” I was saying then I apologize but you will most likely not understand. I’m not trying to insult. I respect Texas as well, but no where near the respect I have for Nebraska. I also respect all fans and their opinions. I’m sorry if mine offended you but this post was in response to PB saying that he hoped to bang heads with Nebraska every December and I believe most Nebraska fans would like that yearly matchup in December with OU instead. I know as an OU fan there is no other team in the North that I would rather meet in that game other than them.

Good luck with that...

With everybody jumping ship at OU don’t count on them being in the Big 12 title game anytime in the near future. With yall losing Suh this year yall may even have a hard time getting there as well. It will be interesting to see what happens next year with all the teams losing key players.

Who's jumping ship

Other than those that are already injured and didn’t play much this year. We will lose some to graduation and maybe McCoy and Beal early to the NFL but I don’t see us losing as much as Texas does after this year (I assume you are a UT fan). I think we’ll be fine next year. Maybe not MNC game but good enough to compete and hopefully win the south.

by What_the on Dec 8, 2009 12:18 PM CST up reply actions

Sorry but Bradford, Murray, McCoy, Beal, and most likely Gresham...

are gone. I call that jumping ship. That’s a lot key players IMO. How key were they? I don’t know but losing five games (most likely six) seems to me that they were pretty valuable. I bet you next year UT doesn’t lose five games. Can you say that? I don’t think so.

As I said in previous post....

Other than those that are already injured and didn’t play much this year.

Bradford and Gresham have already stated they will enter the NFL draft so that’s not news and they fall into the category of already injured and didn’t play much this year.

Murray has already stated he will most likely not go to the NFL. That may change but he has mentioned coming back for another year.

I did say that McCoy and Beal will most likely leave.

That being said you lose a big part of your O-line and we know how that can mess up a season. I’ve hear some UT fans say that the people who will be taking those spots are better and should actually be an improvement. If that was the case they should have been starting this year. Even if in the long run they are better players it takes time to develop OL so I wouldn’t expect great things from them their first year. Considering all the time Colt spent running for his life against OU and Nebraska next year could be brutal for your new QB.

You will also be breaking in a new QB. Yes he’s a 5 star la da da. Who cares. Wasn’t Chris Simms a 5 start QB. So was Bomar and we see how they turned out. Even if he’s good he will not have the game time experience that Landry Jones will have. In the long run he may be the better QB but next year will be his time to take some lumps. I recall the last time you had to replace a few OL was 2007 and McCoy had a horrible year just trying to stay on his feet.

We will have our problems next year no doubt, but at least we took our lumps this year and a lot of underclassmen got experience. This is similar to 2005 and then we came out in 2006 and won 3 Big 12 titles in a row. Can UT say they have had that success. NO. I am willing to bet we don’t lose 5 games next year. I can see 2 maybe depending on how things roll. Hell in 1999 OU lost 5 games and then came back the next year and won a National Title so anything is possible.

by What_the on Dec 9, 2009 8:36 AM CST up reply actions

The bottom line is OU lost five games this year

and I expect that trend to continue starting with yall losing to Stanford. Your team struggled all year without those key players. No one has even shown promise since those players were injured. This is the Corn Nation blog so I’ll respect that and end this discussion.

Ok...

Expect whatever trend you want to continue. History is on OU’s side on this. in 1999 and 2005 which were Stoops worst years the next years were always good/great. I would worry about your own team.

If you think...

we are losing everyone, please read my FanPost about the 2010 season. Suh hurts, but we will be just as good next year as a unit.

GO BIG RED!

Sorry I did mention him in my first retort...

but I only said yall were losing Suh. I do think that yalls offense will be better with some changes. I do think that K-State is going to give you more of a challenge next year though. But besides them I think that the Huskers can make it to the Big 12 with that only hurtle. Good luck in yalls bowl.

Wolvie

Thanks for the back up. That’s a true Husker response right there. Here’s hoping for a 2010 OU/Nebraska Big 12 Championship game. We don’t see each other in the regular season next year so it would be great to play it out in December.
