here we are.

espn.com....NOW!

UT wins but they show Suh owning McCoy.

You guys may have proved TCU/Boise has a shot after all.

Glad Suh is done to say the least. Good God. Texas laid a huge egg vs you fools. Here’s to hoping voters feel the same way I do with Texas- go with TCU or Boise.

by Big Head on Dec 5, 2009 11:04 PM CST up reply actions

I don't agree with that...

That would only make the Big 12 look even weaker.

by Mr. Bump on Dec 5, 2009 11:06 PM CST up reply actions

Boise has the biggest win of the year (vs Oregon) and TCU owns better wins.

I’ll agree their conferences are weaker top to bottom, but they have big wins. TCU beat Utah and BYU. Boise has Oregon.

by Big Head on Dec 5, 2009 11:07 PM CST up reply actions

And trust me Bump, you know I'm all B12...

The only teams with a solid shot at rankings- North: Nebraska, Mizzou South: Texas, Okie State, TTech, Oklahoma. I’ll say four of five get ranked in the Top 25.

during the usc-arizona game, they were saying that the loser would go to the poinsettia bowl since they would be 6th place in the conference. I think they were assuming that Cal would win, though. So Usc is actually tied with Cal and should go to the 5th place bowl which is the Emerald or Las Vegas.

by pcrawttu on Dec 5, 2009 11:47 PM CST up reply actions

Holiday Bowl apparently is.

The bowl must take the runner-up by contract, according to Siebrand.

I've got another cocktail in me and I've calmed down some. Just some!

But the defense played a whale of a game. Name a defensive performance in Husker history where the Blackshirts had to carry the load for the entire team. You can’t. Unbelievable what they did tonight. Absolutely stellar defense. The Pelini’s are Gods. Watson? Not so much.

Big 12 Rule Book

Just curious…I checked the rule book on reviewable plays. The only mention of a clock adjustment is when there is a reversed play on the field. Were the refs allowed to give Texas one second?

The clock is officially kept on the field by one of the officials.

They have always had the authority to correct the time. The review makes no sense though based on what you said. Perhaps the refs screwed it up by going to the review when all they had to do was check their own clock.

by jon's only friend on Dec 5, 2009 11:18 PM CST up reply actions

Yes, I was at the bar

but after watching Lee finish out the first half, I closed my tab to stay out of detox.

I also didn’t hear the tv because I was at the bar, so I was just curious…it looked like they went to the review booth.

by Eeeegls on Dec 5, 2009 11:22 PM CST up reply actions

The play WAS reversed on the field...

So the refs were correct in reviewing the play and the game clock thus givng Texas the 1 second. In all reality, the ball was DEAD when it passed aerily over the sideline and not when it hit the ground at 1 second…that would have given Texas 3 or 4 seconds but all they needed was 1 seond because of the field goal. Nebraska played a helluva game and their defense is the best that I have seen. But contrary to many comments here Texas does deserve to play in the Nat.Champ. game instead of TCU or Boise becaue UT’s game schedule was alot tougher and I doubt nether could have leveled Nebraska. mack brown

I guess I’ve never noticed how much of an arrogant son of a bitch that Mack Brown is.

First he starts the press conference by saying they are excited to play Alabama in the championship game when that’s not even official yet. Then he interrupts a question to player about the last second clock change to say that he had attempted to call time out but it was “too loud” and the officials didn’t hear him.

by Screwface on Dec 5, 2009 11:41 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Strongly disagree

about your opinion of Coach Brown. First Texas and Bama were 2 and 3 in the BCS and second, I’m sure many coaches have interrupted their players during an interview, but doesn’t make them arrogant. If Bo Pilini interrupted Suh during a press conference then I guess that makes him an arrogant SOB as well. Mack is actually a humble guy who only fights for his team. I understand your disappointment, but don’t take it out on the opposing coach. Also everyone will need watch out for Nebraska next year because yall will a top 10 team and blackshirts back? Good luck in your bowl game and next season minus the Texas game.

So what to think?

Defense was absolutely amazing. The offense lacks talent. I tend to think along the lines of Jon in that Watson does what he can with what he has, though I cannot let him completely off the hook. They have to develop an offensive line. No way not how will Nebraska dominate the North or the Big XII until that happens. The Pelinis can coach defense. Bo will be measured in the next couple of years by what happens with the offense, not the defense. Everyone knows that he can coach that side of the ball. Whether he can put together an offense is the question. Does he have to get new coaches in on that side of the ball to do it? I don’t know. He does need better players, particularly on the line.

Necer heard that UT was going to annihilate Nebraska...

All the pre-reports said it would be a very tough game and it was for both teams—a good match up. I think UT just didn’t bring their “A” game and they should have. Did anyone else notice Colt praying right before the field goal? His prayer was answered. He was very humble at the end in interveiws and realizes what a formidable opponent Nebraska was/is and recognized them for that.

by BassQueen007 on Dec 6, 2009 10:09 AM CST up reply actions

Seeing the clock at 0:00

With your team having more points than the other team — and still losing — was a special kind of heartbreak I had yet to experience before tonight.

So, to review:

— Inexplicable turnover seconds after the game is officially in hand: Check. (Texas Tech 2005, Texas 2006)

— Random 80-yard pass by a team that had up to that point just 197 yards all game: Check. (Virginia Tech, 2009)

— Endless embarrassing, knee-to-groin touchdowns against helpless, giving-up defense: Check. (USC 2007, Missouri 2007, Okie State 2007, Kansas State 2007, Colorado 2007)

— Eight turnovers (Eight!): Check. (Iowa State, 2009)

— Time put back on the clock after it hits 0:00 so other team can kick game-winning FG: Check. (Texas 2009)

In other words, it’s been a rough last few years. We’ll always have the 57-yard field goal, though.

Not to be “that guy,” but this could very well end up in court.

The officials didn’t know how to do 2 extremely rudimentary parts of their job;

A) When there is a penalty that exceeds half the the remaing distance to either team’s goaline, it get’s placed at half the distance to the goal, not at the fucking 4 god damned yard line!

B) No time changes shall be made to the clock unless there is a dead ball penalty or an overturned review, there were neither, in this case.

That is blatant mismanagement on the officials’ part.

I have always joked or been mad enough to vent that a team is “paying off the refs” but this game honestly, truly made me wonder if the officials were not persuaded by someone or something to make this go in TU’s favor. The officiating was honestly the worst I have ever seen by anyone, anywhere. Their piss-poor performance tonight makes Hochulli’s flub in the Chargers game last year look good.

I would be shocked if this is the last we hear about this.

Hang 'em!!!

by Screwface on Dec 6, 2009 1:12 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

If you're referring to the PI call . . .

. . . that is an exception to the general “half the distance” rule. Defensive pass interference is always the lesser of (a) the spot of the foul or (b) 15 yards, up to the one yard line. The ball was spotted correctly.

And regarding the review at the end of the game, there are NCAA rules which trump the Big XII rules cited above which explicitly allow for reviews of the game clock regardless of whether there was another reviewable call at issue.

But, again, good game.

by Hopkins Horn on Dec 6, 2009 1:29 AM CST up reply actions

The PI call where the pass was clearly uncatchable, however

and that gifted UT a field goal…that one, that will rankle.

This was a BCS job, no doubt. An undeserving Big XII champion will play for and lose the national title game.

From Burnt Orange Nation

There was one second left on the play clock. I don’t see how you could justify not resetting the play clock to one and winning by a mistake by the officials. We also had some misadventures by the officials, namely the kickoff return where our guy fumbled at the one, fell to his knee without the ball, then picked it up standing and was ruled down.

We had much more at stake here than you did. Winning the championship on a bad call doesn’t suit you.

Anyways you played a hell of a game, I thought it would be. Not looking forward to playing you next year, but good luck in the meantime.

by SpiritOfTheFedora on Dec 6, 2009 12:26 AM CST up reply actions

I agree

Sucks that it had to go down that way, but if I was a Texas fan and didn’t get that second put back on the clock, it would take me years to get over that.

Calls by the refs went both ways. Those phantom PI calls (the first one was especially egregious) were game-changers — Nebraska’s bump-and-run coverage mostly disappeared after that.

by Cheeseandcorn on Dec 6, 2009 12:30 AM CST up reply actions

He did not have control of the ball

therefore it was a live ball to anybody. I could sit here all night…bottom line is your D was fantastic and Suh should be on the FBI most wanted list.

You don’t have to exhibit control if you’re the first and only player to touch it (see: guy who puts the ball on the turf when kneeling in the endzone.)

I Was Hoping...

That the Vikings would get him. Big Pat Williams isn’t getting any younger and putting him next to Kevin Williams would make Minnesota’s defensive line just sick!

Unfortunately, that’s not going to happen. Minnesota will probably be one of the last 4 or 5 teams to pick in the first round unless they traded up, and I don’t see that happening either. DAMN!

ARLINGTON, Texas – Colt McCoy could joke after the game about how much he saw of Nebraska defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh.

"Yeah, we’re best friends," McCoy said.

Suh had one of the great games in Big 12 championship game history, producing a career-best 4.5 sacks among his team-high 12 tackles — seven of which were for a loss.

But it wasn’t enough as the Longhorns escaped with a wild 13-12 victory that cost the Cornhuskers their first chance to win a Big 12 title since 1999.

Just wanted

to drop by and say thank you to Nebraska for such a great performance. You’re team was amazing and as a fan of Texas I feel a little dirty for the win because your defense destroyed our offense and played much better against a good offense than I have ever seen a team play. I really hope Suh wins the Heisman, he is absolutely the best player in the nation and I think college football and the Big 12 are much better when Big Red is playing at this level. Good luck in your bowl game and look forward to hopefully traveling to Lincoln next year for the game. I hate for a team to lose that way and I wish you the best of luck.

It's been a long time

Since I’ve been so proud of a Nebraska team. That defense…wow. Holding OU and Texas to 16 points COMBINED?! Are you kidding me? Those two defensive performances were absolutely mind blowing, and had that last drive gone a little differently, this would have been an absolutely magical win for the Huskers. I just can’t get over how resilient Pelini’s teams have become…truly a reflection of the coach.

Now we have the Holiday Bowl against Arizona (the final score will likely be pretty close to our last Holiday Bowl as well). I really hope our team shows up and really goes out with a bang. This has been a successful season, despite all the heartbreak. After that, it’s time to rebuild this offense. It’s hard to believe…if we had last year’s offense, or anything close to it, we’d likely be on our way to Pasadena right now. Oh well, if, if, if, if. This year’s team has been inspiring to watch, and we still get a nice trip to California out of it, and holy hell its after three and ive got church in 6 hours. Peace.

by jdhusker on Dec 6, 2009 3:13 AM CST reply actions

Congratulations on a hell of a game

That was a great performance, guys. I hope like hell that Suh gets the Heisman.

Back in the first Big Twelve season in ’96, I really had no idea at all for what Husker fans would be like. I kind of expected the worst, i.e., something Sooner-esque. Then, after the teams and fans got back to Austin, I started reading all these strange things in the Austin paper — Longhorn fans talking about how gracious and friendly the Husker fans were, even after that game. I was stunned. I was also very impressed.

Since then, I’ve been cheering for you guys in every game when UT’s not involved. And frankly, had things gone slightly differently this game, I can think of no other team I’d want to see UT lose to. Keep improving: the more teams that beat OU the better, eh?

by MarkW on Dec 6, 2009 5:52 AM CST reply actions

Did LSU get a replay when they spiked the ball at the end of their game? I’m struggling to come up with any college game I’ve seen where they’ve had to review when time expired, especially if it was a second or less.

by davereid on Dec 6, 2009 9:33 AM CST reply actions

LSU did not get a review; Tolliver was down with 0:03 left and the clock ran until 0:01.

It also happened at the end of the Oregon-Washington first half; Washington got a first down and the clock hit 0:00. They reviewed it and said there was 0:01 left when forward progress was stopped, so UW was able to call timeout and kick a field goal.

12 N. O. and two games up for Dome Field Advantage to be Super, not Metro!
The Ducks only had one all-conference player, but THERE AIN'T NO I IN ROSES!
Absolutely certain that either LSU-Ole Miss officials who didn't check to give LSU the full 0:03 they had and NU-UT officials who did check to give the Horns the 0:01 he had can't both be right.

by AllSaintsDay on Dec 7, 2009 10:03 PM CST up reply actions

if people look at yesterdays games objectively

and look at the heisman candidates, and how each affected their games, Only Suh stands out as a total and complete game changer. He is on a different level. Our o-line laid down like cheap hookers, but I’m not sure much could have been done to stop him.
If I had a vote, he’d be my man, and I think a 9-4 nebraska is a top ten team. period. The way y’all played tonight, you’d wipe the field with cincy, tcu, pitt, anybody. it took a little luck and a whole lot of defense to get past y’all last night.
Hats off guys, that was an instant classic.

Good To See

It’s good to see some classy Texas fans here. I’ve always held kind of a hatred towards Texas after the first Big XII Championship game, but after seeing some of the comments here, that’s changing a bit.

I will have to admit to cheering for Texas when they played USC for the title a few years back though. :D

I will say that I am thankful we won and the Huskers lost. We were playing for different marbles than you were so the stakes were a bit different.

You guys are a classy bunch and we can only wish to be in your league when it comes to handing out gold stars.
