So Damn Proud

I can not express how proud I am of this team. I feel like I’m in the pinnacle of the 90s again. Where you wear you colors at every chance you get. Where people won’t talk to you about football because you are a Nebraska fan (I’m in KC and Beakers, Tigers and Wildcat fans love talking football when you’re down). I fucking love it!

by Mr. Bump on Dec 30, 2009 10:33 PM CST reply actions

It's never are great

or never as awful as it seems at the time, and I know that there were times this year when we all felt pretty bad. However, the way these guys played down the stretch is why I love this game and this team.

I am very interested to see how the team goes forward from here. I believe that Watson will get things straightened out on offense, but we need a better caliber of player on that side of the ball. Hopefully some of the redshirts will take the talent level up a couple of notches.

The team ended the season where most people thought they would be in most of the preseason prognostications. So, let’s chalk it up as a successful season and get fired up for even better times next year!

by jon's only friend on Dec 30, 2009 10:34 PM CST reply actions

Agreed. I think this game proved that Watson still has it and deserves to be around next year.

Even though I was calling for his head after those two decommits a few weeks ago!

i didn't expect this game

i thought we’d score maybe 17 points at the most, but man, we really kicked their ass.

Yeah, some kid named CalhadDJaxfirst created a Fanpost on here (it has since been removed) and said he had Arizona blowing out NU. I stated a case as to why I thought NU would win and set my prediction at 31-6.

You gave the Pelini brothers 3 full weeks to gameplan their offense and this offense 3 weeks to scheme against their defense, add in better talent for NU and you have exactly what we all saw on the field tonight.

Hang 'em!!!

Great win but...

Where was Roy Helu? Three carries total?! And what about playing Cody Green. Zac ran off tackle nearly every other play yet the FEW times Cody entered the game he didn’t run at all until the last series he was in…and did he look pissed…and then he didn’t even play on the last series when the ran the clock out. Love the wildcat with Rex though. All in all a great win for the Big Red tonight but I have almost as many questions about the offense as I had going in to the game.

by tommiehusker on Dec 30, 2009 10:52 PM CST reply actions

I think a lot of the questions were answered tonight...

the joe ganz/500 yards per game offense is not gonna fly with this talent. And the incoming players are not gonna dramatically change that next year. The power running game with play-action pass and zone read is the offense for next year.

by Mr. Bump on Dec 30, 2009 10:57 PM CST up reply actions

rephrase

What I really want to know is if Helu was still hurt and if they really don’t have any confidence in Cody at all. Helu didn’t play much after the 1st quarter and even when NU was up 33 points at the start of the fourth quarter they still left Zac in the game until about 5 minutes to go? Why is all I’m wondering.

by tommiehusker on Dec 30, 2009 11:00 PM CST up reply actions

I am curious by all the comments about talent?

or Lack therof on offense. I think we have some great Receivers (hard to tell by ball placement),,, One Great Running back with another one on the way. The Tight Ends are solid. The o -Line???? They will be better next year.
So are we all saying that ZAC LEE is not that Great and Cody Green is as GREEN as they come. QB is the weak spot?

by Texas Husker on Dec 30, 2009 11:02 PM CST up reply actions

I don't think either QB is great. But they don't have to be great with this style of football..

They just need to manage the game and don’t turn it over. Green is much more raw than I thought he would be at this point in the year. He still can’t hit the broad side of the barn. Is the QB spot weak compared to other teams or past Husker teams? Sure. But is it good enough to win you any game? I think it is with a Pelini defense.

when is the last time that happened in a bowl game, anyone wanna look it up?

Concerns for next year...

Receivers…obviously
Linebackers…gonna miss Dillard. What do we really know about the others?
O-line…a concern early but they improved a lot over the course of the season.

by Mr. Bump on Dec 30, 2009 10:55 PM CST reply actions

i don't know

I think receivers…. we still have McNeill, Young, Reed, and Cotton as TE’s, Kinnie, Cooper, Paul as WR’s, along with Antonio Bell.

Backs aplenty, Helu, Burkhead, Robinson.

Line – is a concern for depth. We lose Hickman, then some other guys who didn’t start.

I agree with Paul...I've been banging the #24 drum for half the season...

But the true wideouts concern me other than him. How many passes did Gillelyn drop tonight?

by Mr. Bump on Dec 30, 2009 11:01 PM CST up reply actions

Kinnie will develop, Quincy Enunwa is going to be great, Tyler Evans is a smart player who isn’t afraid of the middle of the field and if you listen to Jeremy Crabtree we are still in the running for another good WR, plus we still have a LOADED TE roster.

Our O-Line should be stacked next year with Caputo, the Jones’, Yoshi, and Henry plus we have Rodriguez coming in who will need time to develop, but will be good and Mike Moudy who looks like a beast (on film, I never get too excited.)

Running backs, take your pick, Ward, Burkhead, Helu, Okafor, Robinson, Heard, Mendoza, I’m sure there is someone I’m forgetting, but oh well.

Our ONLY question on the offense next year is going to be at QB and if Lee can play next year like he did tonight, we might not lose a game.

Hang 'em!!!

by Screwface on Dec 30, 2009 11:31 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

I have no worries about D....The Pelinis can coach any level of talent to make the D strong.

I just worry about QB and the O-line. I think Kinnie and Paul will be Awesome receivers next year.

by Texas Husker on Dec 30, 2009 11:05 PM CST up reply actions

I had 35-6 Nebraska..

…and to be honest I figured I was just being a little optimistic. I did think that the rest and prep time would be a huge factor. Can’t believe that we pitched a shutout against the #20 team. Can’t believe that we put up 33 points without a defensive TD. Can’t belive that Nebraska had never shutout a team in a bowl game.

Crazy night. Great night. I’m gonna sleep well!!!

On the QB front, Spano should be back in the mix

though I don’t know if he will be ready in the Spring. I don’t know enough about him to know if he is a challenger. I recall some very positive things said about him prior to his injury. Green looked like a freshman this year. You can tell he is an athlete just looking at him. I got nervous whenever he threw the ball. I know some are talking about Martinez. Lee held things together and played well tonight. What do you think?

by jon's only friend on Dec 30, 2009 11:09 PM CST reply actions

that's the biggest

question by far heading into this offseason.

Lee played much better tonight, but he’s still got to get tougher. Maybe the fact that it’s his senior year will bring it out of him.

Lee, Green, Spano, Martinez, Kellogg, there’s got to be a consistent starter there somewhere.

definitely one of his best games.

hard to rate him considering the other team was doing absolutely nothing……he made some quick decisions, threw the ball away a couple of times, had trouble hitting a wide open Kinnie on a broken play….the pump fake and pass to Paul was a Growing up moment for Lee.

Nebraska is BACK

It’s great fun to enjoy a bowl rout like this, and a great way to say good-bye to some outstanding senior leaders. Thanks for the memories to Suh, O’Hanlon, Asante, Dillard, Hickman and others! You will not be forgotten – you’ve led the turnaround. But the cupboard is stocked, and getting saltier. We have offensive issue to sort out, but I sense that Bo will accept nothing less than excellence. Man, can Rex Burkhead play football! He is the kind of inspirational, hard-nosed player we need to show the way. The future, in 2010 and beyond, is looking very bright.

Didn’t mean to post that last one, but now that the wild cat has come to nebraska, what should we name it? As long as Rex Burkhead runs it maybe we could call it the Wild Rex or the Wild Dinosaur!

Per the Omaha World-Herald; he’ll be out 10-12 weeks after surgery, which should take him right up to spring practice.
