Texas Tech coach Mike Leach has been suspended while the school investigates complaints from a player and his family about treatment after an injury.

The school said in a release Monday defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeill will be the interim coach and lead the team in the Valero Alamo Bowl on Jan. 2 against Michigan State.

From http://www.sportsbybrooks.com/mike-leach-suspended-over-treatment-of-player-27494:

I’ve learned from a college football and media source this afternoon that the player involved in Texas Tech’s investigation into Mike Leach’s treatment of an injured player is inside receiver Adam James, son of ESPN college football announcer Craig James.

Coincidentally, Craig is scheduled to broadcast the bowl game that Leach has been barred from coaching: the Valero Alamo Bowl on Jan. 2.

I’ve got an email into ESPN about the prospect of Craig working that game.

As for Leach’s treatment of Adam James, I’ve learned that James was locked in a darkened equipment room during a recent Tech practice after Leach discovered James wearing sunglasses at practice.

James had told Leach that he needed the eyewear to combat symptoms of a recent concussion.

I was also told that wasn’t the only incident involving James, but I’ve not confirmed any other specific actions by Leach to this point.

Joe Schad of ESPN reported this afternoon that Leach’s attorney plans to challenge the suspension and will work to get Leach reinstated before the bowl game.

Way to go Mike ‘Mangino’ Leach!

Clarification: hopefully this isn’t as bad as Mangino and it doesn’t feel like it will be. Unlike Mangino, I think would actually miss Leach.

if this

is as bad as it gets, could it signal the end of college football coaching as we know it?

i mean…. if he locked him in a darkened equipment room…. oh, gosh.

that’s my old man perspective.

Sounds

to me like this is someone throwying their money around. Come on how do you complain about being locked in a black room…..take a nap and get over it. Or as my mom would say put on your big girl panties and grow up. Unless of course he wasn’t given his Iron Man night light then I think they should fire him and ban him from all sports ever. Never separate a little boy from his night light.

Really?

Because locking a kid in a dark room that he can’t move around in for three hours, all for having a traumatic brain injury – that seems kind of serious to me.

Frankly, I’m appalled at how enthusiastically the folks at Double T Nation have already absolved Leach of any possible wrongdoing.

Yea Really

the kid isn’t 5 yrs old so he can choose not to sit in the closet. The coach is dead wrong if there is a legit health problem(concussion) and should realize it. Sounds like this thing is blown way out of proportion. Like Jade said “take a nap and get over it”!

According to the kid's family

Leach posted a guard. So no, he couldn’t really choose not to sit in the closet, if the family is to be believed.

by Cheeseandcorn on Dec 28, 2009 11:58 PM CST up reply actions

that's the assumption

that he was placed there because of the concussion. that’s how it’s being represented, and written up by media. careful – how people word things when they write them has an amazing amount of influence on how you interpret the situation.

I guess what really bugs me is the constant parent involvement in more and more of these cases. I think it’s bizarre that players like James get their parents involved when they’re fully grown men who can make their own decisions…..

It was a film meeting room with an exercise bike and A/C.

Yay, for ESPN blowing smoke up people’s ass again….

Craig James / SMU. That’s all I’m saying……

That's Leach's story, yes.

And if Leach’s story is right, then it’s not a very big deal. But if James’ story is right, then that’s a serious allegation. I’m not saying I necessarily buy James’ story, but I guess what bugs me the most is how many people immediately bought Leach’s story hook, line and sinker — some even before they heard his story.

It's always fair and dilligent to know both sides of the story.

If you are bringing your cell phone and sunglasses to practice you need to stay in the closet. When this unfolds and all the BS is on the table for everyone to see, everyone will be singing a different tune.

I’m not going to try and defend myself and my stand on the subject. I just hope everyone is smart enought to look at both sides and see what happened and make the call for themselves…..

Aaarrrgh!!!!

Me favorite pirate football coach walking the plank! Why must all of the really cool characters (see Woody Hayes et al) internally combust? Actually, this is not nearly on the same level as Mangino, at least what the media has reported so far. Jeez, why did he do something that stupid!?!? And even as it was stupid, and something that does not surprise me coming from Leach, it does not warrant anything more than the suspension.

they

really don’t recruit just kids as much as they recruit their parents……

No doubt

and this is going to hurt with at least some recruits regardless of how it turns out. Leach was absolutely stupid for putting the kid in a closet, but that in itself does not warrant anything more than a suspension. Reading all of the posts on Double T Nation was very interesting. What I take from that is that the contract issue a year ago has created a wedge between Leach and the AD that will most likely cause this situation to end worse than it should.

I honestly do not blame the James family at all for registering a complaint. Put my kid in a dark closet for three hours and you will hear from me! Now, if James has been a pest (Little League dad) like some Techsters suggest, I can understand where a stupid reaction like putting a kid in a closet would happen, especially from Leach. Remember, he was the most outspoken supported of Mangino when the crap hit the fan at KU. Bottom line as far as I am concerned, Leach was stupid. But it does not warrant anything more than has already been done.

And he’s been officially fired: http://www.doubletnation.com/2009/12/30/1225450/breaking-mike-leach-fired-from
