the falsity of the heisman
In the spirit of full disclosure if I had heisman vote which I do not, Suh would be my choice. As I sit here on the morning of the ceremony I beleive Suh will finish second or third. I beleive Mark Ingram will finish first. Many of the heisman polling sites seem to speculate that as well. E.S.P.N. like the rest of america has turned into a schitzofrenic blabber machine. One day Lou Holtz says he'd vote for mccoy, the next day ingram. Herbtreit touts suh one day ,ingram the next. The same goes for mark may, mel kiper and the rest of there parasidic ilk. The danger with this is, is that it leads to hollow statements that wield to much influence on eventual outcomes. In reality anybody watching bama vs. florida would clearly see that bama's defense not ingram was the story. The talking heads conveinatly used that game as a launching pad to hype Ingram. Keep in mind these are the same folks who told everybody he had no shot two weeks ago after the auburn game.
I am going to spend the next few minutes picking on Ingram because:
- A. I think he will win
- B. I dont think he should win
- C. I think Suh should win
- D. Agree Gerhart should be a finalist
- E. Agree Mccoy should be a finalist, though not top three.
- F. won't waste time on Tebow as he is just along for the ride, although he has no business here.
You could argue Ingram is not the best back in his own conference, and although the s.e.c. is the toughest league the touble comes when you take a national view of Ingram. Ingram finished with 15 rushing td's. That is a very good mark. Gerhart finished with 26. Gerhart also finished 2nd nationally in rushing yard per game, Ingram finished 12th. That is just comparing two heisman finalist. Take a look at some other backs who are arguably every bit the runner Ingram is. Dion Lewis-Pitt 16 rushing td's, 3rd nationaly in rypg. Ryan Williams-Virginia Tech 19 rushing td's, 5th nationally in rypg. Jacquiz Rodgers-Oregon State 20 rushing td's, 17th nationally in rypg. Take a quick at look all purpose runners, Ingram finished 31st. That is behind prominent names such as mardy gilyard (2nd), c.j. spiller (4th), the rodgers brothers at oregon state (5th) and (18th) respectively, Gerhart (19th), and Dion Lewis (22nd).
A final measurment i love is a stat called points resonsible for (prf). This stat is dominated by qb's. Who is the first rb on this you may ask? That would be Gerhart (21st) at 13.83. The next rb on this list would be j. rodgers (45th) at 11.00. ten other are on this and ingram is not one of them.
The purpose of this is not to say ingram is not a good back, he is. The purpose is to prove he is not the best back in the country, he's not. He will most likely win the heisman in roughly 9 hours and there will be no justification. Fuck it, just another blow to the heismans credibility.

Alabama had a lot to do with it.
The reason none of those other RB’s are in the hunt, is because none of their teams are playing for the national title. It’s hard to argue for a guy who puts up amazing stats, but plays on a team that strictly runs the ball and sucks at everything else. The fact that ’Bama had a balanced team, and Ingram still made those numbers is probably a better argument than just comparing stats with every player.
Im not saying he should have won, but it’s not always stats. Having said that, it shouldn’t be given to the “best player in college football” then, because you can’t quantify that.
I’m okay with Ingram winning it. I would’ve had a big problem with McCoy winning over the guy who bitch-slapped him all over the field (Suh). I would’ve had a problem with Tebow winning over a guy who just beat his team a week ago as well. Gerhart was a solid finalist, but he played in the Pac 10, and I just don’t think he did enough for his team, despite his numbers.
I would have never guessed that Alabama hadn’t had a Heisman winner! They have like 48 National Titles….so that really suprises me. I’m okay with it.
Suh should have been second though for all of the previous reasons I mentioned. Next time, NU better promote their guy a little bit better.
GO BIG RED!
heisman post-mortem
I agree NU could promote better, that being said I also respect Pelini for not doing so. I also agree it’s stunning the tide has never had a Heisman winner. I have not researched it yet but I presume I could find many tide players more deserving than Ingram. I don’t think I will research it, because after last night I am done with the Heisman and what it stands for.
The point of my blog was not that some of those other backs I mentioned should win the award. I was just saying as an astute follower of the game I have watched many backs more talented than Ingram. I also want an explanation from anyone, as to how Suh is not the best player in the nation.
I also want to apologize to anyone who read my blog. Way too many spelling errors and other sorts of mistakes. I was in a huge rush and will clean that up in future posts.
I get the idea
that after the presentation, a lot of people were done with the Heisman. I didn’t find a lot of complaining about it today, and I expected that I would.
