2009 All-Big 12 Football Awards - Suh Defensive Player of the Year, Crick, Amukamara, Asante Make First Team
The 2009 All-Big 12 football awards have been announced, with some nice surprises for Husker fans.
Ndamukong Suh was named Defensive Player of the Year and Defensive Lineman of the Year. He and Texas quarterback Colt McCoy were the only unanimously-selected players on the first team. Is that appropriate or what?
Nebraska placed four on the first-team All-Big 12 list, all from the defense including defensive linemen Suh and Jared Crick. Cornerback Prince Amukamara and safety Larry Asante from the secondary. The selections should give pause to Texas fans who are convinced the Blackshirts are lacking in pass defense.
Roy Helu made second team, as did Alex Henery as placekicker. Phillip Dillard gets rewarded with a second-team placement at ilnebacker, a great recognition of how far he's come since spring.
Mack Brown as coach of the year..... I'm not sold on that. Brown has all the players, had a pathetically easy non-conference schedule, and didn't have to deal with the NCAA suspending any star players. The guy had an easy path to where he is now. Why coach of the year for him?
Interesting to note that Texas did not have a single offensive or defensive lineman selected on the first team. Instead Chris Hall and Adam Ulatoski dropped to second on offense, and Sergio Kindle and Lamarr Houston are regulated to second team defense.
The complete list of awards is after the jump.

Re: Mack as COY
I think you touched on the reason why Brown won COY (besides going 8-0 in conference play).
1st Team:
UT – 3
MU – 3
NU – 4
OU – 4
OSU – 4
Based on this, Mack did more with less ‘top end’ talent (per Big XII coaches). Who else is more deserving anyway? No other team in the conference even ranks in the top 20 and has less than 3 losses.
"It's not that the Irish are cynical. It's rather that they have a wonderful lack of respect for everything and everybody."

Can we start referring to Larry Asante
as “The Assasin.” I remember hearing him say that when they have the players announce themselves on the jumbo tron before games. I thought to myself, ‘do you have to have more than one person (including you) call you by a nickname for it to actually be a nickname?’
Either way I think that Corn Nation should start referring to Larry Asante as “The Assassin.”
Also is anyone but me scratching their head with the tight end position. Mastrud had like 250 yards receiving and 1 touchdown all season. Zach Lee owes Mike McNeil a steak dinner. If Lee would have realized how easy those short passes are in game 2 instead of game 10, McNeil would have run away with the award.
Hey Jon, when referencing Kindle and Houston you said they were regulated to second team, I think you meant relegated.
Otherwise, Henery not making at least second team punter is a traveshamockery.

true
on relegated…..
but… how inspired do you think some of those Texas defensive players will be for not making first teams?

They are a solid TEAM, Sergio Kindle and Sam Ocho are the only two reconizable names on their defense. Aaron Williams is a stud, I just don’t know that he’s better than Amukamara. A lot of people forget, their secondary was cut up by A&M and TT. As a matter of fact, their defense allowed 150 more yards and just as many points to Tech as NU did.
Nebraska’s problems all year have been almost strictly on the offensive side of the ball. If Nebraska could have put the ball in the endzone once against VaTech, put together anything symbolizing a sustained drive against TT, and not turned it over 8 times against Iowa State, this team would be undefeated and this game at JerryWorld would be for a trip to the Nat’l Championship game.

Seriously. Whoever thought Henery is not the best punter in the league needs to be shot.

Congrats Big Suh...
and others for making the list.
I would venture to say that Coach Rhoades at Iowa State should have had a shot at winning the COY for the turn-around he pulled off in Ames. Texas has plenty of talent, so to say that he did more with less is way off in my opinion. I’d also say that with at least a solid offense, Pelini would have been a good choice. But of course I would say that….
one thing
i forgot to mention……
helluva match up coming up between Suh and Texas center Chris Hall, who will be helping with double teams. That’ll be something to watch.
