Really I try and not let it affect me that much,
They are kids, and I watch the games for fun.
Try not to freak out too much people.

This is the most embarrassing loss in NU history
I’m saying it again.
Only thing that would make it worse would be if the D imploded.

Do not take anything away
from Iowa State. They did not freak under the pressure of 80,000+ fans. The did not turn the ball over. Their D came up big when it needed to. Nebraska gave the game to them, but they were there to take it. All of us have seen underdogs not take advantage of mistakes made by the favorite. Iowa State did.

Seriously, ISU should get major props. They overcame a huge disadvantage and came away with it.

You have to be kidding. If you give ANY team 8 turnovers you had better lose. I would be imbarrased to be ISU, Only 9 points when the opposing team gives you 8 turnovers??? Neither team deserved the win.

I'm not sure
what to say about this one.
Paul Rhoads – made some nice comments about us at the end of the game and about his own team. Hopefully Pelini can keep himself a little cool after this one.

Tipping point
That’s all I can think of. Once enough players become convinced that they can’t play, then everything falls apart. Fast.
It seemed like a good idea at the time.

My thoughts as well
Now we get to see what Pelini is really made of. He’s done great with the defense, but today’s debacle proves that the offense needs a lot of work as well. Can he keep it together for the rest of the season, or are we looking at a 2007-esque collapse?

I am watching
the post-game on TV and I have never seen Nebraska fans sitting like this in the stadium stunned. Husker Nation has to stick together. That was a message the team tried to show with their arms linked when they came on the field. Everybody, it was worse when BC was here!!!!!

What now?
Any suggestions as to what they do to fix this? It can’t all be pointed at QB, WR, RB… really it was a systemic breakdown in all phases of the offense. How do you fix that?

I was just typing a comment asking the same question.
I’m really curious to see what Bo will do this week. If you’re Pelini, do you shake things up on offense, or just preach hanging onto the football and chalk this game up to one massive fluke?

I don't know
other than honestly just working harder the next week.
We’ll go back and look after this – but on offense, you really have to break it down to plays that your offense can run and be successful all of the time.
This offense has zero confidence at this point. none.

And the impending media firestorm/pitch fork wielding mob that is about to descend on their heads is not going to help one bit. I hope the fans can at east see the forest in the trees and try to stay away from individual player bashing… sadly I’m an optomist…

Receivers and runners not able to catch or hang onto the football. That’s about it. O-line didn’t help, but we gave this away. Lee did fine for the most part and should not be blamed except possibly for the last two garbage INTs.

Well
when the game summation is “We were woefully bad at offense.” and it was literally every position, it has to either be a 2 minute press conference or an 8 hour one with game film breakdown to try and cover it.

Thank god Nebraska has a defense
or the BC days of ‘07 would be back quickly. Absolutely terrible…….F minus. I can’t blame this on Zac Lee, but he didn’t help the cause either. I would rather bench Lee and play Green the rest of the season and take my lumps than watch Lee continually throw high and behind players. There is a reason Lee was a transfer from Junior College and Cody Green was a 5 star prospect out of Texas and that’s just pure ability and talent.

Last time i checked
when Nebraska replaced their starting QBs with Freshman QBs mid-season (Turner Gill in 1981 and Tommie Frazier in 1992) they turned out pretty good. Hopefully, there will be more emphasis in recruiting some top level high school RBs and WRs and let them know they are coming here to start immediately and will not redshirt. Cody Green is going to need it.
by Dogham on Oct 24, 2009 3:21 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
To play Devil's Advocate
Last time I checked Tommie Frazier is one of, if not the best, college QB in history. Cody Green may end up being spectacular, he may not, but using Frazier as the rule is not quite accurate.

I was disappointed to see the “first-stringers” still in there at the end, particularly after Kinnie got on a bit of a roll. These other guys need some playing time to get better.

Callahan
I’m going to go out on a limb here. I wish Nebraska had the offense Callahan was running. I am sick and tired of trying to watch them try to run out of the shotgun, it’s garbage. Double tight, fullback running. I don’t understand what Watson is trying to do. This was the worst game to watch, even worse than those 2007 games. Lee is not a zone read quarterback. Ganz was decent at it, Green would be awesome at it.

No. I don’t think ANYONE wants that. Sorry.

I'd rather have this team than any of Callahan's.
At least with a great defense and bad offense you won’t get blown out as often as with one of Cosgrove’s defenses.

It isn't
That’s not Callahan’s WCO? I could’ve sworn it was.
Regardless, they need to return to the old-style running offense. What Bo’s running out there right now isn’t cutting it.
by Darth Venomous on Oct 24, 2009 4:14 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
I didn't say I wanted Cosgrove
All I’m saying is that the offense looks different from last year, 07, and 06. Wasn’t Watson the coordinator then? They were in the top 25 in rushing. When Callahan was there, they ran the ball differently, they played hard nose running the ball football. Now they’re trying to spread guys out, zone crap, it’s not working this year. When they were lining up with double tight and fullback, they were actually running the successfully today. That is how they ran it when Callahan was there, that’s all I’m saying.
Callahan is a west coast guy, but I really think he knows how to run the football. Now I didn’t say run a football team.
by firejason on Oct 24, 2009 6:24 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
i think
the biggest problem with this offense is they haven’t anything on which they can depend. nothing.
the defense has several things on which they can depend. Offense, nothing.

The offensive line is the best part of the offense today...
Dont understand what people are thinking. Cotton’s group played the best, and it wasn’t that good, but they outplayed the QB, WR, RB, everybody. But hell, Lee had time, still throwing behind people and starting to throw into double coverage. Our WR are horrible. This may the the worst offense in the short history of the big xii. Watson is got to be coaching for his job right now.
Lee was OK, but not a leader at all. God, we need a spark, and he is not the guy. And can we please stop with giving I State cred. They are a bad team even with their starting QB and RB, but we are worse. Right now, we are a 6-6 team with Lee. We may be worse with Green, but we may be better, but as far as I am concerned, going 4-8 vs. 6-6 is really no difference. Gotta give Green the chance. No rational reason not to.

A solution to the scoring problem
Kick a field goal as soon as the offense gets within 55 yards of range, regardless of what down it is.

It really does beg the question...
…is Iowa state “back”?!
But seriously, to folks stating their comparisons of this fallout to that of the Callahan era, I will say this:
the end results are actually strikingly similar…we have a one-dimentional team, headed by a coach who appears to give little more than lip service to the aspect of the game that falls outside his personal area of genius. We remain a solid unit on one side of the ball and a laughingstock on the other…with the same middling results to show for it in thw w/l column.
The only difference being that instead of a passine, ineffectual bead coach we now have…well, let’s just say the opposite.
Also, zac lee should be benched, if but for no other reason than that he cannot his the broad side of a barn with any frequency for any sustained period of time…all of his pics today resulted from his inability to hit receiver anywhere that they don’t have to flail through the air to try and at least get their hands on it. Hence your several drive-killing tipped ints that some would seem to suggest were not Lee’s fault at all.
Pitiful…

Passivity
DTsker, I will say as much in my rant on Monday (available at www.spatulacitybbs.net). I appreciate Bo for the passion he brings, but at some point, he has to show competence. Allowing the same cluster-effing people to remain in the game only to perform more clustering, doesn’t speak well for him.

Bo Pelini:
“Zac Lee’s not the problem…we didn’t play well around Zac Lee today.”
Or last week, or the week before that…Is it just me, or does he just kind of contridict himself right there. To me, that just sort of sums up why Green should be given a chance to lead this team. But what do I know…I’m just a stupid fan who’s fixated on what happens on the field on Saturdays! I’m sure Lee lights it up in practice and in meetings! I guess we have to actually lose to Iowa state at home just to prove to ourselves that our stubborn coaches know best!
Where was all this talk about “every position being open”? All I saw was the exact same guys doing boneheaded shit.
