Ask a Red Raider
I've invited folks from Double-T Nation over to Corn Nation to help out as I'm going to be pretty busy for most of the week and my schedule probably isn't going to allow me to answer questions like I would in a normal week.
Ask all your questions about the Texas Tech Red Raiders, offense, defense, special teams, coaching, etc., and what you can expect to see this week against the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Hello Corn Nation
As mentioned above, Seth will likely be busy this week. I’ll be glad to check in from time to time and do my best to answer any Tech related questions you might have.
Good luck this weekend. Looking forward to a great game.

Is Leach still talking about Chicken?
In the weekly conference calls?

Anyone coming up to Lincoln?
Go to the Watering Hole on O Street.
Wait for a table if you have to, ignore the surly service.
Order the grilled wings.
Thank me.

What's your take on the "big-time program" thing?
Is TT a “big-time program”? Can they become one under Leach? Does it matter/do you care/do you hate me instantly for asking about it?
I loved his quote this week about the game-time decision.

You might get mixed reactions to that one
Most fans like Leach, primarily because he took us from decades of being a perennial 6-6, 7-5 team to one that can realistically aspire to being one of the big boys. Stadium improvements, much-improved recruiting classes, a winning tradition, regular national TV appearances, alumni donations – everything about the program has improved markedly during his tenure (not that the administration’s commitment to these improvements should go unnoticed).
As I’m sure you NU fans can appreciate, a winning tradition brings with it higher expectations and sharper criticism when the team loses. Being ‘out-coached’ has been a rather frequent criticism in recent years whenever we lose. Last year we heard it after the games with OU and Ole Miss (and even our close call with you guys), and the same with the loss to UH this year. Personally, I believe there’s a grain of truth in those complaints. Decisions that may have seemed exciting and daring gambles for an underdog now seem boneheaded when they backfire. There seems to be a quiet murmur among some of the natives here that Leach may have taken us as far as he can take us, that he is incapable of taking us to the next level. With the improved talent we now have in our underclassmen, expectations are very high for the next couple of seasons. If we pee down our leg, I suspect that murmur will grow considerably.
As for the ‘big-time program’ remark, that was probably in response to one of the local newspaper reporters who had published a comment about our need to act like one, plus maybe a jab at the Tebow situation the press was so obsessed with. To me, Leach seems to be relishing his increased press coverage in recent times a little too much. I always liked his quirkiness, but lately it seems a little contrived. But that’s just me.

Thanks!
That’s great stuff. I was personally glad to see Leach stay at Tech this offseason, because he really did invigorate the entire program, and he’s just entertaining to have around. During the 90s, I didn’t feel one way or the other about Tech, which is obviously bad news. Now that they’re very competitive, and especially with those three damn stomach-punch games, I’ve worked up a healthy animosity toward them. Which is good news for you!

The bad thing about good news LOL
Funny, but UT, A&M, and OU have been going to great lengths recently to vehemently insist we are NOT their rivals. Ten years ago they didn’t really care.

We're a big time program in my eyes but not the rest of the country eyes.
We’re not what some call “tier 1” status. Mainly due to the fact that we don’t have near the budget that some of the larger schools have. That’s fine with me, I like doing more with less, at this point.
We can become a “big-time program” under Leach if we can hire Leach a quality control type of guy. Much like Kingsbury at Houston. There are times, I think that Leach needs to be questioned for play calls. Sometimes it’s genius, sometimes it’s being up by 8 and winning on the road in Houston. (Still a little hot about that one)
I think it does matter. It would be nice to get the budget and the pick of the litter with recruits and staff.

Does anyone ever question whether Texas can support a whole bunch of top-tier teams?
by awolfson on Oct 16, 2009 3:03 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
It seems like if you're anyone other than Tech, then yes.
Other schools in the state, mainly students and fans, seem to think that we’ll never reach Tier 1 Status. I on the other hand think we will. Like all things, it takes time and money. 2 things I do NOT have at the moment…….
Damn price in oil…. (rant off)

There is more than enough room for several top-level schools. Tech doesn’t often compete with UT for the same players, nor do we seem to go head to head with TCU very much.
If aTm can ever get it right with their coaching, they should be decent based on the rankings they seem to always have in the recruiting season.
I can see the day when UT, Tech, aTm, TCU and maybe Houston (if they can keep a coach more than four years) could all be top 25 with room to spare.

Support in terms of number of players? I would think we could. Most out-of-state teams we play are half full of Texas kids. You’ve got a few yourself. There is one difference. We graduate ours while UT and OU get most of the big dumb guys. Our grad rate is 1st in the country for public Div I schools, while UT and OU are close to last.
In terms of money? That’s more dicey. UT and A&M are the only two schools that get to share in the huge land trusts that were created back in the days of the Alamo. UT has the largest athletic budget in the Big 12 (over $100 mil), anywhere from 2 to 5 times the size of ours (depending on where you get your figures). Our school admins have gone out on a limb in recent years by putting most of our money into football at the expense of all other sports.
In terms of fans? Tech is the only game in town for the western half of the state, and folks in West Texas are serious about their football. Around the bigger cities I can’t say whether they could regularly keep their stadiums full.

Enough for 60+k every week?
It was probably on Double-T Nation, but I believe I read some time ago that Tech was at least exploring adding something like 10k seats, putting them well into the 60k range.
Is attendance that hot for every game, or is it just for select “rival” games such as UT/aTm?
I can understand funnelling the money into Football as opposed to other sports, as that does tend to be the biggest revenue sport (followed by basketball). If you can increase the football profits, you can support the rest of the teams. Sometimes it doesn’t seem fair that football “gets everything”, but it’s the one that often pays for everything else.

They are just now finishing an expansion to 59,000+ seats (added an upper end zone deck). Supposed to be finished for the atm game next week. And there’s plans for adding luxury boxes to the side that doesn’t already have them.
Unlike your place, ours does not sell out every game. Almost all conference games sell out, but early games against cupcakes usually have some empty seats up in the nose-bleed sections.

Wow
I’ve never heard about the land trust thing. And those schools are still benefiting from it? Can you explain what went on there?

It will make you sick. It made me sick. I was drilling on University Lands for a long time and the thought that a lot of that money went to the University Texas…….. jeez….
