Walk-ons

Put together a this site, and one of the links is for walkons.  Nothing fancy but I think it gets the point across as to how important they have been in the past.

I am amazed reading message boards at how llittle an impact some people think walk-ons and instate players have had.

There are probably some errors, I need to go through and double check the data.  Any corrections can be sent to the link on the site.

working now..

Your site is working now. Looks good.
I think Walk-ons do a couple of things.
One, it gives that small-town high school or 2nd tier player HOPE. It tells them they have a chance to play D1 football.
Also, you get players that want to play FOR Nebraska, rather than play AT Nebraska.
This in-turn helps with the overall attitude of the team and adds increased competition.

Specifically for Nebraska, it’s very important to have a strong walk-on program, considering Nebraska starts at a disadvantage vs. the Superpowers of college football – population to recruit from.

Not bad

Walk ons…. well, I looked at this for the Sea of Red book, and I guess I felt like I covered it there, so I haven’t said much here.

I’ll say this about walk-ons. We tend to focus on the player who makes it, a Jared Tomich, or (this year) a Todd Peterson, but I think that takes away from the overall significance of the program.

What makes the walk-on program important is that it elevates the level of performance of the overall program, i.e, it makes real the threat that someone will take your job if you’re not making 100% effort all of the time.

Organizations, whether football teams or the company you work for, are ALWAYS looking for magic in that area – how to bring up performance of the bottom of the organizational hierarchy so that the overall performance increases.

You can’t measure that directly when it works, but you can certainly see it when it’s gone… as in last year.

Great link

As a recent Husker fan I’ve been informed of the “walk-on tradition” at NU, but never really knew the true extent of it. That link pretty much summed it up for me.

Nebraska boys

This state is full of super talent. It has alot of 8 man players, but there are some great football players out there with heart. Something I sometimes see lacking in the big scholarship players that come to Nebraska. Maybe this staff will start to notice that our state is doing a great job of teaching the game at the high-school level and take a closer look at these players right here in our own state.

Thought I'd set the mood for Saturday. I shot this video at last year's home opener (yes, I will try to get the new Tunnel Walk up when I get home tomorrow night).
