Steve Pederson's Nebraska Scheduling Would Have Killed The Sell-Out Streak
I keep thinking it's me, but it's not just me in that there is very little buzz with Husker fans around tomorrow's game against New Mexico State.
It's not like I'm not interested in it, but I honestly don't feel like spending another $30 watching us play a horribly overmatched opponent. SJSU did a good job of staying in the game against us last weekend, and we played badly enough to keep it interesting.
Maybe it's that there are five home games to open the season, the first three against teams we should easily beat.
Maybe it's because we blew our mental wad on the pre-season hype around Bo Pelini, and in the first game discovered that, yes, this will be a work in progress and we won't just walk into stadiums and be handed wins because we're Nebraska.
Maybe it's because the weather in Lincoln is going to suck tomorrow.
Maybe it's because there are other college football games that are WAY more compelling and they're on at the same time.
I have come to the conclusion that had this kept up under Steve Pederson and Bill Callahan, that the sell-out streak would have ended within the next couple of years.
It requires an alternate reality, one in which SP and BC were successful enough to stick around and continue to be in charge of things, but at some point, I think Nebraskans would have stopped shelling out all of their hard-earned cash to watch these kinds of games, which is why TO has been busy getting better opponents in the upcoming seasons.
Are you going to the game? Buying PPV for New Mexico State?

Yes
Call me sillly, but I will be on my couch paying $30 to watch the game, but maybe it’s just too many years of being on the east coast and not being able to watch the game.

Still an excuse to get drunk and watch football
Granted I’m not super jazzed about this game but since its still Husker football and a we get to play this weekend I’m ready for Saturday to get here. The thing that interests me about this game is how we play. The Western Mich. game was alright in terms of football but left some things to be disired. The San Jose St. game was alarming in a way since we figured better improvement between the first game and the second. For this game I want to see if they play more like game 1 (specifically Qtr. 1) or like game 2. If it’s more like game 2 we are in for some bumpy roads ahead. I also kinda look at it as Nebraska’s last major ‘practice experience’ (no offense Aggie fans) before we get a week off and then the real schedule starts.

I am going, but wow
there were so many tickets people were selling last week. We GAVE AWAY our extras. It was amazing and scary. I’m glad the OOC games are looking up.

1.
The sellout streak would never end because there are too many deep pockets.
2. With teams like UCLA, Tennessee, Washington, Southern Miss, etc. coming, everyone likes a few guarenteed wins.

No
1. The idea that someone else is going to continue to buy out tickets is a fallacy. I imagine there were more than a few people who never thought the winning season streak would come to an end either, but it did.
Fact is, you put out a crappy product and people stop buying it – that applies to Nebraska football as well as Microsoft Windows Vista. What is it that the financial/investment advisors always say -Past results are not necessarily indicative of future results – that applies here as well.
2. A few? The scheduling put together by Pedey sucked eggs. It isn’t about a few guaranteed wins, next year’s schedule is pretty bad. Had that continued, it would have been more about boredom than winning.
How many tickets do you think are for sale today? How many empty seats will there be in the stands?

Have you seen Washington lately?
Don James is shaking his head at what Washington football has become in recent year.s

Perhaps
your definition for “sell-out” is different from mine, boss. Last I checked that meant all of the tickets would be bought. ;-)
Also, as long as a bunch of patsy non-cons can get you to the title, everyone will be more than happy to oblige not just Steve P.

that's
part of the problem.
No, we have the same definition, but I think you’re just taking it for granted.
We’re no where close to the title, so if the games aren’t interesting, who cares about them?
Mike – you went to the game… how many empty seats were there, how many people outside the stadium selling tickets or giving them away?
My point in asking that is gauging interest, not necessarily with the sell-out strreak.

Very few empty seats that I saw...
…but by that same measure, there were an awful lot of tickets available for sale outside the stadium. I think there were a few more last week, though.

The people who use that token as a recruiting tool.
