Big 12 Baseball Weekly Review - May 19th, 2008 - The Big 12 Seeds Are In

In the Big 12 this week:

-  The two top teams in the Big 12 get swept. It seems neither Nebraska nor Texas A&M wanted that national seed spot. A&M can still get it if they don't completely flop in the Big 12 tourney. Nebraska has lost their chance by falling to third.

- Before you get too bent out of shape about the Huskers bad weekend, remember that this is a team that was picked to finish sixth preseason. They have overachieved this season and had one bad weekend. There is plenty of season left to determine how far they can go.

- Even Oklahoma State screwed up. At first glance their series win and move into second looks good, but when you consider that Oklahoma sucks, the Cowboys loss on Sunday was their first in eight regular season games to the Sooners, and they could have taken first place in the Big 12 and a possible national seed, they really blew the weekend as much as the Huskers and Aggies.

-  Kansas State swept Kansas, knocking them to ninth place and ending their season.

- Baylor goes into Texas Tech and loses the series, yet Tech was so far behind they still finish last in the Big 12.

- Big 12 Tourney is set, more to come soon.

Record Last Week Results Upcoming (RPI)
Baylor 3-2 Tue., May 13     Baylor 7, Texas State 2
Wed., May 14     Baylor 11, SFA 0 (7)
Fri., May 16     Texas Tech 7, Baylor 4
Sat., May 17     Baylor 13, Texas Tech 3
Sun., May 18     Texas Tech 12, Baylor 5

Baylor loses their last series of the season and ends up sixth in the Big 12. They'll face Nebraska in the first round of the Big 12 tourney. Baylor's RPI isn't too bad at 40, but they finished with a conference record of 11-16. Not sure if that's enough to get them into the NCAA tourney.
Kansas 0-3 Fri., May 16     Kansas State 5, Kansas 0
Sat., May 17     Kansas State 5, Kansas 4
Sun., May 18     Kansas State 11, Kansas 10

What a flop by the Jayhawks. Their sesaon is over. It all came down to the last game. Kansas needed three outs and they're in the Big 12 tourney as they're leading in the ninth. The Wildcats get a single, then a double to tie the score. Then they move their runner to third on a sac fly. Kansas intentionally loads the bases, and then the next KSU batter is hit by a pitch. What an absolutely horrid way to end a bad season.
Kansas State 3-0 Fri., May 16     Kansas State 5, Kansas 0
Sat., May 17     Kansas State 5, Kansas 4
Sun., May 18     Kansas State 11, Kansas 10

At least Kansas State played well enough this weekend to get into the Big 12 tourney. For their efforts they get to play the now second place Cowboys.
Missouri 3-0 Fri., May 16     Missouri 8, Nebraska 1
Sat., May 17     Missouri 22, Nebraska 9
Sun., May 18     Missouri 7, Nebraska 3

Missouri sweeps the Huskers as the Tigers athletic department continues to be a thorn in the side of Nebraska. The Tigers stay ahead of Texas and for their efforts get to play them in the Big 12 tourney. Should be a very interesting match-up, probably the best one amongst the first round.
Missouri really rocked the Huskers bullpen.
Nebraska 1-3 Tue., May 13     Nebraska 8, Creighton 1
Fri., May 16     Missouri 8, Nebraska 1
Sat., May 17     Missouri 22, Nebraska 9
Sun., May 18     Missouri 7, Nebraska 3
What a horrid weekend for the Huskers. The bullpen gives up seven runs in the eighth inning on Friday night, then on Saturday, starter Thad Weber lasted only two innings before a host of Husker pitchers got on the mound and contiued to get destroyed.
Nebraska gets the third seed and will play Baylor to start tourney play. We will find out if the Huskers are in a slide or the trip to Columbia was just a bad weekend.
Oklahoma 2-1
Fri., May 16     Oklahoma State 7, Oklahoma 1
Sat., May 17     Oklahoma State 11, Oklahoma 1
Sun., May 18     Oklahoma 10, Oklahoma State 4

Oklahoma played just well enough to win one game and keep the rival Cowboys from taking over first place in the Big 12. I suppose that's something to hang your hat on. For their efforts, they make the Big 12 tourney and will face Texas A&M.
Oklahoma State 2-2 Wed., May 7     Rice 4, Oklahoma State 2
Fri., May 9     Oklahoma State 3, Texas Tech 2
Sat., May 10   Oklahoma State 13, Texas Tech 3
Sun., May 11   Texas Tech 12, Oklahoma State 10

At least the Cowboys won their series against the Sooners. But then again, they should have as Oklahoma is on the bottom tier teams while Oklahoma State has one of the best teams in the nation. And the Big 12 regular season title is right there within your grasp... and arrrgh.
Oklahoma State gets Kansas State in the Big 12 tourney.
Texas 5-0 Wed., May 14     Texas 18, Alabama A&M 0 (7)
 Wed., May 14     Texas 14, Alabama A&M 3 (7)
Fri., May 16     Texas 5, Texas A&M 2
Sat., May 17     Texas 5, Texas A&M 2
Sun., May 18     Texas 6, Texas A&M 3

Sweeping Texas A&M at the end of the season is impressive, and the NCAA tourney selection guys love the Longhorns anyway.
Texas will face Missouri in the Big 12 tourney. Very interesting - whichever team wins that will move up in the NCAA selection process. It's 'go time' for Texas.
Texas A&M 0-4 Tue., May 13     UT Arlington 16, Texas A&M 8
Fri., May 16     Texas 5, Texas A&M 2
Sat., May 17     Texas 5, Texas A&M 2
Sun., May 18     Texas 6, Texas A&M 3

Texas A&M is a on a six-game losing streak. That's not the way you want your season ending and they'll need to have a decent showing at the Big 12 tourney to pick up a national seed. Still they played well enough earlier in the season to win their third Big 12 regular season title. They'll get to bash on Oklahoma for the first game of the Big 12 tourament. If they lose that one to the Sooners, then we can all wonder what the hell is going on with these guys. Until then, credit this weekend to Texas for getting their stuff together.
Texas Tech 3-2 Tue., May 13     Dallas Baptist 8, Texas Tech 4
Tue., May 13       Texas Tech 9, Dallas Baptist 8
Fri., May 16     Texas Tech 7, Baylor 4
Sat., May 17     Baylor 13, Texas Tech 3
Sun., May 18     Texas Tech 12, Baylor 5

The good news for Tech is that they win their last Big 12 series. The bad news is that their season is over. Maybe after the way this year has gone, that's actually good news?
