NIT 2nd Round: Nebraska Cornhuskers vs. Ole Miss Running Rebels
Opponent: Mississippi Rebels
Date: Monday, March 24, 2008,8:05 p.m. CDT
Listen:Huskers Sports Network
TV: ESPNU
Arena:Tad Smith Coliseum (8,910)
Please use this thread to discuss the NIT Tounament Nebraska - Mississippi basketball game
- Ole Miss and Nebraska are the #2 and #3 seeded teams in their NIT bracket, respectively.
- Ole Miss plays tough defense like Nebraska, but plays more uptempo on offense. They have bigger guys than we do, and what we need to watch is whether Aleks Maric can play inside without getting into foul trouble, and whether we can hit well on our perimeter shooting.
- They would stick this darned thing on ESPNU, which is just about the only sports channel that I don't get.
- Been stuck at work tonight, just got home, and I'm hoping for a Husker victory.

Ole Miss
is much bigger than we are, listening to Pavelka's pre-game....
I guess we'll find out how we'll we're doing in a few minutes.
Still irked about ESPNU, though.
No 360 coverage, either
It wouldn't be so bad that the game's on ESPNU if they put coverage on ESPN360...I'm stuck at work for another 45 minutes, so I'll miss the whole first half.

yeah
you'd think that with more channels we'd get to see more games, but that's not typically the case.
by Jon Johnston on Mar 24, 2008 8:27 PM CDT up reply actions
Pace is too fast
We need to slow the game down in a hurry. The game's right on the pace Ole Miss likes, and that can't end well.
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 8:19 PM CDT reply actions
ack
we're kind of coming apart here....
good time out by Doc, maybe something can change.
Can't tell what's happening
The Ole Miss "live" stats only update about once every 2 minutes of game time...just saw it jump from 14-11 to 23-14.
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 8:27 PM CDT up reply actions
Defense...
We need some. Quick. Ole Miss is shooting just over 70%...
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 8:29 PM CDT reply actions
i just
noticed you did a game preview, I should have bumped that up, but i didn't see it. sorry about that.
right now, it doesn't seem like Maric is having his way inside, and we haven't stopped them much.
by Jon Johnston on Mar 24, 2008 8:33 PM CDT up reply actions
Wish I could watch...or listen
Has it been a situation where we can't get the ball inside, or is Maric struggling when the defense collapses on him?
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 8:43 PM CDT up reply actions
not sure
i can't find it online (video), so I'm listening to Pavelka, who seems to enjoy getting on the officials more than announcing the game some times.
by Jon Johnston on Mar 24, 2008 8:45 PM CDT up reply actions
At least
Pavelka's almost live...the "live" stats are at least 2 minutes of game time behind.
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 8:46 PM CDT up reply actions
right back
25-23, Nebraska gets back within two.
Now, like you said, man, control tempo, play defense.
they
keep controlling the tempo.
3:51 left, 34-29 Ole Miss leading.
we slowed this down, it's like we'd win the game easily....
Need to get a litte run
before halftime, keep it within reach for the second half.
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 8:49 PM CDT reply actions
Harley
hits a three with one second left, we're now down four at the half.
so... it was a mini run. :)
I'll take it
Down 4 at half is a different world than down 9 at half. If we can regroup and find a way to keep Ole Miss in check, we can still win this.
Of course, if Ole Miss continues to shoot 64% from the floor, we're in trouble no matter what.
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 8:56 PM CDT up reply actions
Yuck...
Looking at halftime stats, not only has Ole Miss only missed 10 shots, but they've got 5 offensive boards. That's something we'll need to work on in the second half.
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 9:00 PM CDT reply actions
52-46 Ole Miss
Nebraska got it within 1, and within 2, but can't seem to hit a shot.
Been home for about 3 minutes, and the TV crew's not too great. May turn on Pavelka to drown them out.
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 9:22 PM CDT reply actions
Ole Miss's Defense
Is pretty much nonexistent. We're missing open shots.
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 9:24 PM CDT up reply actions
Good D on that possession
I don't know if Ole Miss was getting a lot of open shots in the first half (the 64% shooting says they were), but they're not this half. Husker defenders are in their face every play.
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 9:27 PM CDT reply actions
52-51 Ole Miss
Good little run by Nebraska. Good penetration to give easy shots and put backs. 11:35 to go.
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 9:28 PM CDT reply actions
Under 12 timeout
Strowbridge will be shooting 2 with Nebraska down 1 after the timeout.
I don't like the rule change that makes the TV Timeout come before the free throws...it's like the mandatory stoppage ices the shooter for free.
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 9:30 PM CDT up reply actions
we
just need to get over the hump.
very winnable game, let's hope we can pull it out
by Jon Johnston on Mar 24, 2008 9:30 PM CDT up reply actions
Nebraska takes the lead
Strowbridge hits both free throws.
The TV broadcast just showed Houston Nutt and the Ole Miss football team. Brings back bad memories of the 03 coaching search.
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 9:33 PM CDT reply actions
WOW
What a backdoor cut...the entire Ole Miss team was drawn out to half court, and Nebraska got a wide-open shot.
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 9:35 PM CDT reply actions
Strowbridge
misses another wide-open 3.
We need to push it inside for easy shots -- Ole Miss is giving us looks.
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 9:37 PM CDT reply actions
Harley
Hits a 3 to give NU a 58-57 lead.
Then Ole Miss hits a 3 and gets a chance for a 4 point play.
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 9:38 PM CDT reply actions
Terrible call goes NU's way
That last out of bounds was definitely off Maric.
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 9:42 PM CDT reply actions
Foul Trouble
Anderson and Dagunduro both have 4 fouls...
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 9:43 PM CDT reply actions
More offensive boards for Ole Miss...
Nebraska needs to stop giving Ole Miss 2nd and 3rd chances.
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 9:44 PM CDT reply actions
ANOTHER offensive board
for Ole Miss! At least he missed the put back...
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 9:46 PM CDT reply actions
Anderson fouls out
We need his defense...that hurts a lot.
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 9:48 PM CDT reply actions
Does this Polynice guy
Have some sort of Ninja powers? It seems like he manages to slip in, wide open, next to the basket on every other play.
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 9:49 PM CDT reply actions
Now the TV crew
keeps talking about Tubby Smith (he's at the game, his son plays for Ole Miss).
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 9:53 PM CDT reply actions
well
VA Tech has beat up UAB 75-49... 44 seconds left
man, the crowd sure as hell comes through on this radio broadcasts.
Down 3, 2 to go
Need to get a stop and a score
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 9:56 PM CDT reply actions
Ole Miss
Passes the ball out of bounds...
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 9:57 PM CDT reply actions
They're not great
But to their credit, they're calling some bad calls all around.
Although the foul before this one on Daganduro should have been a shooting foul (and the shot went in).
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 9:59 PM CDT up reply actions
Strowbridge
gets a rebound and drives down the court and hands it off to Ade for the tying layup.
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 10:01 PM CDT up reply actions
holy crap
can we hang on and get this thing?
by Jon Johnston on Mar 24, 2008 10:01 PM CDT up reply actions
Dagunduro
double-dribbles with .5 to go...
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 10:03 PM CDT reply actions
Whew
Left Williams WIDE open...and he couldn't get a decent shot off.
Headed to OT tied at 70.
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 10:05 PM CDT reply actions
how
are they looking with regards to stamina?
is either team looking tired?
by Jon Johnston on Mar 24, 2008 10:06 PM CDT up reply actions
Not really...
In fact, Daganduro is looking more energetic as the game wears on.
Mississippi has been slowing down, but they are managing to get some openings.
Huskers have foul trouble.
TV Crew: Stop talking about Tubby Smith!
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 10:08 PM CDT up reply actions
I say that...
And as OT starts, Ole Miss looks tired...they're not hustling for boards like they were.
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 10:09 PM CDT up reply actions
Two turnovers in a row
by Maric...not the way he wants to go out, I'm sure.
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 10:10 PM CDT reply actions
76-71 Ole Miss
Doc calls timeout. Ole Miss looks winded, but Nebraska's making some unforced errors, like they're tired mentally.
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 10:11 PM CDT reply actions
Weird thing...
All the fouls in this game are on guards. Post players have very few. Sure looks like a lot of physical post play...
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 10:13 PM CDT reply actions
Velander
nails a wide-open 3.
76-74 Ole Miss.
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 10:13 PM CDT reply actions
Polynice
Uses his Ninja Magic for Ole Miss to draw a foul
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 10:14 PM CDT reply actions
Maric
Headed to the line for 2 shots.
Hits the first, misses the second
77-75 Ole Miss
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 10:15 PM CDT reply actions
Ole Miss
has stopped pressing.
Maric going to the line again.
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 10:18 PM CDT reply actions
Daganduro
wrestles with the Ninja for a (rather quick) jump ball call...
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 10:19 PM CDT reply actions
81-75 Ole Miss, 57.4 Remaining
Nebraska uses their last time out.
We need to score on the possession, and get a stop.
If we have to start fouling, this could get ugly.
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 10:21 PM CDT reply actions
Taking WAY too long
Need points here
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 10:22 PM CDT reply actions
Velander misses
That probably does it. Now, Sek Henry (a shooter) has fouled out, and there's just not enough time.
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 10:23 PM CDT reply actions
3 possession game...
NOW it is...
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 10:24 PM CDT up reply actions
SEC?
The Ole Miss crowd is chanting "SEC."
What is the deal with the SEC solidarity?
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 10:25 PM CDT reply actions
they're
insane down there?
Yeah, I heard that and thought "what's the point?"
by Jon Johnston on Mar 24, 2008 10:27 PM CDT up reply actions
Hahahahaha
Chanting SEC in the NIT. Sounds kind of appropriate to how "strong" that conference was this year.
That said, good year Huskers. Talked to several K-State fans last week who said they're worried about the direction of Nebraska basketball under Doc Sadler.
well
i guess it was a 20-win season, lot of progress made by these guys.
Matt Davison is really irked by the lack of stats provided by Ole Miss. Funny.
it's going to be whether or not we can replace Aleks Maric next season, otherwise, I like where Doc Sadler is taking this program.
The supporting cast
Really came along late in the season. I think if they can continue to improve, the redshirts can contribute like Doc expects, we'll be in good shape. We've got Roburt Sallie (California JuCo player of the year) coming in, and he should be a good scoring punch.
If that German 7-footer can qualify, we'll be in good shape.
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 10:29 PM CDT up reply actions
German
7 footer?
holy cow. didn't know that.
by Jon Johnston on Mar 24, 2008 10:30 PM CDT up reply actions
Christian Niemann
He's between 6-10 and 7-0, depending on the site you look at. I've heard a rumor that there's a question about whether he'll qualify academically. Considering our history with the NCAA clearinghouse (the Sallie incident last year), I wouldn't count on it if there's trouble.
Here's his ESPN profile, and his Rivals page.
by huskerlibrarian on Mar 24, 2008 10:36 PM CDT up reply actions
And Ole Miss wins 85-75...
Thank you Aleks Maric. Fittingly, you had a double-double in your final game. Good luck in the NBA Draft, European league, or wherever you end up.
