Husker Women Advance to Play Top-Seeded Maryland
Nebraska's women's basketball team jumped out to a 13-2 lead, and held off a late charge to win 71-68, the Husker's first NCAA tourney win in 10 years. All-Big XII Junior Kelsey Griffin tied her season high with 26 points. You can check out highlights from the game here.
The Husker women will face top-seeded and fifth-ranked Maryland (on the Terps' home court) Tuesday at a yet-to-be-determined time. ESPN and ESPN2 have television coverage. Nebraska has never advanced past the second round. Maryland, coming off an 80-66 win over 16th-seeded Coppin State, was the NCAA champion 2 years ago, but lost last year on their home court in the second round. Maryland finished second in the ACC at 13-1, and has only lost to Rutgers, North Carolina, and Duke (in the ACC tournament).
Beating the Terps will be a tough task, but it's great big-game experience for a Husker team that will return all but one player from this year's squad. Should the Huskers win, they'll advance to the Sweet 16 in Spokane.

Opportunity Knocks
I actually like this sort of game that no one expects you to win with a young team. It's a good opportunity to see how far you've come, gain confidence and experience, and all that. And Maryland's not invincible (they did lose at home in last year's tournament), so we can still win.
The good news is that Maryland wasn't exactly burning the house down against their 16 seed, while the bad news is that Nebraska had trouble putting Xavier away after building several huge leads. Since there's probably not going to be a lot of putting a number 1 seed away early on their home court, there's a good chance we can play scrappy and stay in it with a chance to win late. Do that, and we may see the second weekend of the tournament for the first time.
