Blackshirts are back?!?
11 blackshirts were passed out today. Does this seem a little premature?
Yes, it's exciting to think "They're ba-a-ack!", but has anyone looked at the score board this season? We're 6 and 4. A blackshirt defense should have won us more than 6 games. 29.1 points a game against our D so far this season. And we've only managed to outscore the 3 conference opponents that we were supposed to.
I appreciate the jesture, but I think it's more to inspire the guys to be blackshirts than acknowledge the fact that they actually are the blackshirts of old. Not that I'm all negative--we've come a long way since the Callahan defense of the past several, exhausting years. The team is tackling, sacking, and of late causing a real ruckus!! All-hail SUH, DPOTW!!

I like the move-
Nobody is playing “good” defense in the B12 this year so the scoring average and yards per game are skewed. The only game that the D cost us was the Va Tech game, and even there our offense wasn’t as evolved.
KU thought they would roll into Lincoln and pick our secondary apart. The D-Line in large part and the D in all won us that game.

if Pelini
waited until we were “back” with a defense like the old days, he might be waiting so long that the tradition would start fading away.
We have two more games – win them – and it’s still a pretty decent year for a first-year coach.
What’s kind of sad is that Cody Glenn won’t be getting one. And maybe that’s why they’re coming out now. Glenn was one of the emotional leaders of the defense. The Blackshirts are coming out now as an emotional lift.

Funny....
on Sunday I was thinking about when the Blackshirts would be handed out so tradition would still be remembered. I “knew” it had to be this year and was trying to think when the best time would be. In comes Glenn. (a whole different story about kids that think they are bigger then the program)
I think Corn Blight nailed it..Glenn is an emotional leader and something needed to happen to keep our attitudes up. I think there wasn’t going to be a perfect time this season (this isn’t the ’95 team), so again, Pelini impresses me again with his thoughtfulness.

Well
it could be that Bo said “you know what a lot of traditions have been broken the last 4 years so heres what we are going to do. You can earn Blackshirts by beating a ranked team or becoming bowl eligable. Dont preform one of those and the shirts stay in the storeroom.” Didn’t we accomplish both last week.

KU wasn't ranked
So no we didn’t accomplish both.

It's Appropriate
It was time. You cannot judge this (and probably future) defense(s) on how things were measured in the past. The offenses that they are facing today are far from those of the Devaney and Osbourne eras.
Also, we have faced more Top 10 ranked teams this year than any season in recent memory. Even our best defenses of the past would have had a problem with TT , Oklahoma and possible even Missouri. I also think that we would beat Va Tech if we would play them again – at this time of the season.
Pelini understands very well what he is doing doing with the Blackshirts and why!
