Big 12 Baseball Week Review (Week ending Monday, March 5th)

This feature will move to Monday's from now on. The weather has adversely affected some schedules, and we'll be able to include more weekend re-caps this way. Overall win-loss records are updated on the left sidebar. Win-loss for the week is included below.

Sat., Mar. 3 Pacific 3, Baylor 1
Sun., Mar. 4 San Diego State 6, Baylor 2

Baylor played in the Pacific State Bank Classic this past week after beating UT-Arlington mid-week. Baylor was held two only two runs against San Diego State, and one run against Pacific on only three hits. Obviously not a great week for offense for Baylor.

Baylor will play Texas State for the second time this season on Tuesday, after beating them 10-6 earlier in the season. They'll host San Francisco, Mississippi State and Winthrop in a tournament next weekend.

Kanas had their home opener this past weekend after losing to Oral Roberts earlier in the week. Weather problems moved their opener to Sunday, with them beating Western Illinois in a pair of games on Sunday, moving their all-time record against the Leathernecks to 14-0. Oklahoma had previously swept the Western Illinois Leathernecks.

Kansas will play Tabor on Tuesday, Baker on Wednesday, then travel to Arkansas who had a bad weekend this last weekend in Minneapolis in the Dairy Queen Classic, and dropped from #5 to #10 in Baseball America's Top 25 poll.

Kansas State opened the Lamar Classic in Beaumont, Texas with a 10-3 win over St. John's. The Wildcats then beat Lamar with a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning, but their luck ran out as UC-Santa Barbara won with a two-run homer in an eleven-inning game on Sunday. The Wildcats finished the Lamar Classic with a 2-1 record.
They then returned home for their opener against BYU. They beat BYU with four runs in the eighth inning to win the first game of the BYU series, 5-1. They'll play BYU again Tuesday, then the Wildcats take on North Dakota State in Manhattan next weekend.

Mizzou swept Youngstown State, not allowing a single run on Sunday. With the run-rule in effect, the first game lasted eight innings, with the second going seven innings. The Saturday game was delayed due to weather, so the teams played two games on Sunday.

The Tigers will stay at home for a mid-week series about Louisiana-Monroe on Tuesday and Wednesday, then take on Texas State and Dallas Baptist in Dallas next weekend.

Playing their first games ever in the state of Florida Nebraska went 1-2 on the weekend. Nebraska was delayed leaving Lincoln only to have Saturday's game delayed due to rain. Tony Watson gave the Huskers a 8-0 lead over Iowa, only to see it evaporate, losing 12-8. The Huskers lost a later game on Sunday against Notre Dame, then salvaged something from the weekend beating host Stetson on Monday, 6-2.

Nebraska's home opener against UN-Kearney has been postponed due to field condition. They will travel to Tuscaloosa, Alabama next weekend. The losses this weekend dropped the Huskers from the Baseball America Top 25.

Oklahoma 4-0 Wed., Feb. 28 Oklahoma 5, Wichita State 4
Fri., Mar. 2 Oklahoma 14, UC-Riverside 5
Sat., Mar. 3 Oklahoma 11, UC Riverside 5
Sun., Mar. 4 Oklahoma 2, UC Riverside 1

Oklahoma beat #11 Wichita State mid-week, then swept UC Riverside at home over the weekend. Two Oklahoma players picked up Big 12 honors, with Aaron Reza (SS) and Heath Taylor (LHP) being named Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week. The win on Sunday extended Oklahoma's winning streak to seven. The losses dropped UC Riverside from the Baseball America Top 25, where they were previously ranked 20th. Wichita State dropped to #14.

Oklahoma will play Creighton on Tuesday and Wednesday at home, then head to San Diego to play in the Aztec Invitational against #22 San Diego, San Diego State and Michigan.

Oklahoma State beat up on Dallas Baptist early in the week, then swept lowly Nicholls State over the weekend. The win Sunday extended the Cowboy's winning streak to five. Oklahoma State moved to #16 in Baseball America's Top 25.

Oklahoma State will be the next Big 12 team to play at UT-Arlington on Tuesday, then return home to face #13-ranked Pepperdine for a series next weekend.

Texas swept Oral Roberts at home over the weekend. The Longhorns have now won 10 of their last 12 games after starting the season 2-4. The week moved the Longhorns to 12th, the top-ranked Big 12 team.

Texas will play Texas A&M Corpus Christi on the road Tuesday, then return home to face Miami of Ohio for a series next weekend.

Texas A&M beat A&M Corpus Christi earlier in the week, then won the Domino's Pizza Classic despite losing to Oregon State in a shortened game on Monday. Both teams ended the tournament with a 3-1 record, The loss Monday snapped a 14-game winning streak for the Aggies, but Texas A&M's Blake Stouffer ended up sharing the Big 12 player of the week honors after going 8-for-15 with 10 RBI, three runs scored, a triple, a home run and three walks for the week.

Texas A&M will host unranked Florida in a three-game series next weekend. Oregon State moved to #9 in Baseball America's Top 25 with a 13-3 record.

Texas Tech beat New Mexico, then won the rubber game on Sunday to win a series with Cal State Northridge. Friday's game saw Tech pitcher AJ Ramos throw a seven-inning shutout with 10 strikeouts to win 5-0.

Texas Tech has a two-game series against UNLV on Tuesday and Wednesday, then will play Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, eighth-ranked Rice and TCU in the Whataburger College Classic in Corpus Christi next weekend.

Western Illinois

Under Kansas you said that Western Illinois had previously swept Oklahoma. Actually the Sooners swept the Leathernecks.
