Prayers Requested for Omaha Victims

Our hearts go out to the families whose lives were shattered yesterday in the senseless killings at Westroads Mall in Omaha. Please keep them in your prayers over the next few days as they deal with this tragedy.

Husker Mike lives in Omaha, not far from Westroads, and states more clearly than I could what must be on the hearts and minds of people there.  While I left the state 20 years ago, I still have a fair number of friends in Omaha and when I heard my first thought was wondering if they were all right. I guess you never really leave Nebraska, do you?

Husker Pedia is collecting items for donation to an auction to be held on behalf of the victim's families, so please consider donating to them.

This morning, I again drove by the Westroads

But this morning it was different.  It looked the same, all lit up for the holidays.  But it was different.  Everybody slowed down for their own reasons.  For some, it was to count the number of TV and satellite trucks in the lots, or to see all the lights of the various national morning shows originating from my hometown.  For others, it was to say a brief prayer for all the people who have been affected by this tragedy.

Gary Scharf

I remember Gary, he was about 3-4 years ahead of me. What I remember is he had a good sense of humor.

I also remember Gary, myself, and a couple other guys who I won't name getting caught swimming in the Curtis pool after hours.

As I was climbing nekkid out of the pool, ol' Ken Wolfe whipped his flashlight towards the bushes and yelled at Gary to "come the hell out of there". Hard to hide when you're pale white and completely nekkid.

Wolfe took all our names down (except the one he never found) and then let us go. Nothing ever came of it.

I hope that y'all remember them in your prayers.

Go Big Red!

I did not

know Gary he was gone when I moved to Curtis but of course I know his family that is still in Curtis. I served on the school board with his brother John. Johns wife is the extension board head here and I know John SR. and his wife from working at the CO-OP and measuring grain bins for the FSA. They are very nice people and do a lot for the town and area. This is a terrible terrible thing for them (or anyone) to have to go through. My prayers are with them and the other victims and their families. God Bless them all.

You guys were affected more than me...

My condolences to you both and your home town.
